The older I get, and I don't know how much older I will get, the more I appreciate Keltner. I grew up idolizing Bruford, Collins, Peart, Rich... all those tech drummers, but there's so much to be said for a guy who can just play the right thing for the song - like Jim Keltner, Mick Fleetwood and Ringo. He's a master, for sure. I spent all my time trying to learn to be technically proficient, and should have spent more time looking to find the pocket.
As a teenager my best bud was so into Yes, ELP, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep... I was like, dude! Learn some Mott, BadCo, Aerosmith , etc. That was too easy, he said. We could have been stars in our hood. I was just singing and learning some piano and guitar.
I love guys like Jim Keltner , something very honest about him. And his playing may sound smple easy , but most importantly he's grooves just perfect and his drum sound blows me away... Hes like the perfect "song" drummer right next to Ringo...
I've recently bought a Steely Dan Asia CD and have been totally blown away by how good the song Josie is on that Cd.....I play it over and over and it just blows me away especially Jim Keltner's touch on that song. Its a phenomenal recording by everyone playing and I always loved the song and anything SD did but this new CD sounds so good I cannot stop playing it.....Total euphoria just listening to that song !!!
GUITAR CENTER....ARE YOU LISTENING. THIS is why you should have people who can properly tune drums. Jim found the snare off the shelf ready to play and it's on an amazing recording. Tune your drums so they will sell.
I had a chance to meet him last year and I got to tell him we have the same birthday. He said “Oh? I’m not that old”, we laughed and I said “Of course not, Mr. Keltner.” We took a picture after. He’s such a hilarious and down to earth guy.
Great stories Jim! this dude played with Everyone, and on huge songs! Hall of Famer for sure. If I owe Ringo and Buddy Rich a Nod, I owe you one too Jim...I just didn't know it back then.
He and Ringo playing together during the Concert for Bangladesh Is pretty impressive as well. And Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour with Joe Cocker and Leon Russell!
One of the greatest drummers of all time. Watch him with Neil Young, Friends and Family at Red Rocks. Phenomenal. Also the Traveling Wilburys documentary playing the refrigerator!!
I've been looking for more info on his technique, especially in regards to that Red Rocks performance. Does he always pull his sticks back that far? Or is it just to slow himself down to Young's tempo? He "stalls" his sticks almost pointing backwards. Really cool-looking, but difficult to emulate!
@@Surge_LaChance I'm just impressed with how he played old songs and some newer ones. Mr Keltner is not just a studio drummer. And, how is playing the refrigerator not awesome 😎
I constantly tune & adjust my 1979 Ludwig Super Sensitive 6.5x14--I think of it as being useful for all styles/occasions--but I dig what Mr. Keltner is saying here.
According to Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) he said Jim played a 16th note pattern on a metal trash can lid and over dubbed it at the bridge on “Josie”-now that I know that I can definitely hear it- pretty cool
I can relate to that jr. high story. One day I was opening my hall locker and some jerk shoved me. Someone said, "Hey, leave him alone, he plays the drums." From that day onward I carried a pair of sticks in my back pocket and no one messed with me again.

That's what a band needs.A drummer that feels the music.Very cool guy.
He's been my favorite drummer for many years. Unpretentious, serves the song, and is even moved to tear by music. You can't beat (sorry) that.
So he was the drummer on "Josie"? That is one of my all-time favorite tracks. Everything on that track is perfect. The drums sound is spectacular.
so Aja featured Purdie, Gadd AND Jim Keltner ?!!!!!! insane, huge respect for this massive talent.
....AND Rick Marotta (Peg) AND Paul Humphrey (Black Cow) AND Ed Greene (I got the News)!
@@larspedal ricks hihat on peg is some of the tastiest of all time
Thank's for sharing. I'm from Tulsa also & recognize the Cain's Ballroom Cap. Home of Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys.
Can definitely relate to that high school experience.Even when I was on the football team and marching band simultaneously, I was still "Drummer boy"

His drumming on John Lennon’s stuff is amazing.👌🏻
Thanks for the video! It's hard to find footage of Mr. Keltner. One of the biggest.
my favourite drummer of all time.....watch him on "a Concert for George". Thank you
I would love to hear just his drumming isolated, he's a true master.
He and Ringo playing together during the Concert for Bangladesh Is pretty impressive as well. And Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour with Joe Cocker and Leon Russell!
Gotta love Jim...
Jimmy's always with the shades and the wrist band... subtle, grooving, cool

As a former Tulsa guy, love the Cain’s Ballroom hat...
Would love to know about his experience playing with Jim Gordon on mad dogs and Englishman tour

A living legend!!
Amazing story.
Very underrated drummer and knowledge of the structure of music
Maybe not as well known as some others but certainly not underrated.
Absolute groove master.
What a good dude. Best drummer in history also.
What a gent
My favourite drum sound is She’s a Mystery to me.
He plays the drums on Josie? Wonderful
Powerful scene. Slim Pickens, gut shot, walking off over to the river's edge.
What a boss.
Legend
What a beautiful cat!!!
What a terrific story!
Just been listening to his work on the Jesse Ed davis album of 1973 . It just jumps out of the vynil
Jim played a garbage can on the song Josie by steely dan as well!
Anyone else heard "I Want You" by 3rd Eye Blind at the beginning? 😂
Yup

What kind of snare is he playing here?
When Josie comes home!
so good!
where is this guitar center? in the vid
It’s the one on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood.

so funny, that high school Jim is referring to with all the "blonde people" is like 90% Mexican people now.
Replacement theory
I'm surprised he didn't do this at Pro Drum Shop which he refers to.
Larry Copcar this series is sponsored by Guitar Centre. All the musicians that appear in them are paid to do so, I’d imagine.
The great SLIM PICKINS WAS THE GUY
His snared sounds like St.Anger
D.B. Cooper can play.
So being the "star" is what gets everyone falling at your feet? ... get real !
Great Drummer, but he´s trapped in a slowmotion universe crack. :)
+Al Hamilton not a bad universe crack, in my book :)
Cry and play.
