One thing I HATE about mma is the fact that when you try to appeal a loss, 99% of the time it won’t happen. Ofc most appeals are dumb but in the Marco Lopez and Erick Silva case, it shoulda been reversed
That's probably why he got #1 spot. The best ref around screwing up that badly... Yeah. An early stoppage (like Ankalaev vs Cutelaba, I known it wasn't Herzog here, it's just an example) is bad, but you can always run it back to clear the controversy. A late stoppage is where things actually get ugly. And I honestly expected the Yan vs Aldo fight to also be here. That lack of action from the ref made Aldo take lots of unnecessary damage.
Well the corner could've threw in the tower after 2 10/8 rounds not the refs fault smith was still in fighting mode he was alert and had his wits about.
Steve Mazagatti said he was available for an interview about this video, right after he was certain that Fitch was unconscious. He's still checking so be patient guys
I was going to say that if he was on this list of great referees, MMA on point has lost all credibility. And he wasn't on the list, so great video guys!
Geeze. Chill out. A corner stops a fight because it respects the fighter and his willingness not to quit. There are just situations where a fighter has to be saved and actually not many fighters are arguing with that...
Anthony kept fighting! It was hard to watch, but he on one hip, shrimping out, and trying to get out from under Glover the whole time. When fighters are beaten they roll over in the fetal position and cover up. Anthony was following his directions. Idk. It was a fucked up situation. 🤷🏻♂️
@Peace and Love Lmao I'm just saying, whether or not the fight should have been stopped when it was shouldn't be blamed on the ref, he did a great job. If anyone was supposed to stop the fight for smith it was his corner but if he wants to take years off his life not fighting smart then that's on him
i'm glad i'm not the only one who thought this. He was defending himself, every time it was getting to the point to stop it Smith sensed it and fought hard. Fighter safety is kinda an oxymoron, no matter what your job is essentially to make sure someone is safe enough to beat the hell outta the other guy. This is why we have rules where you don't stop a fight 'cause they have too many bruises, too much pain is something a corner should cared about; How much pain will my fighter face after this fight and will he be able to fight again. Refs are only about the present fight and unfortunately Smith is the toughest bastard in the ring right now.
Glad you mentioned what you did about Yamasaki, he was actually pretty solid before he got to the UFC. You know refs feel the same performance pressure fighters feel to a certain degree. Like a cop settling a dispute or something like that...

He WAS a good ref, but in later years it was just bad call after bad call after bad call. As bad as Mazagatti? Maybe not. But he has made an unreasonable amount of bad calls to be called good anymore.
But... that's exactly the point. Goddard shouldn't have stood them up in the first place. On the feet, every fighter has a punching chance. Imagine if Woodley threw a lucky strike and knocked Usman cold. That would have been a result of the unwarranted stand up. It happens a lot ya know.
Well, I *was* gonna make the argument that #1 had more to do with the corner than the ref, but if Herzog himself takes the blame, I guess I'll let him have it. In my mind though, I think #2 is a more appropriate capstone for this.
