really looking forward to hasan radicalizing ethan slowly over the course of this podcast
What does radicalizing mean
@@michellenoonan2615 this is just a dictionary definition but:
To cause (someone) to adopt radical positions on political or social issues.
"some of those involved had been radicalized by the Vietnam War"
“Radical” means “to the root”. People who are radicalized want to see and get beyond the surface of a problem, and deal with it.
@@kissedbyfirewyrms7312 great response!
@@kissedbyfirewyrms7312 that's not what anyone means by radicalize. Have you been on the internet or like any experience in US politics for the last 10 years.
When people say radicalize they mean for their view to become more and more extreme. For example we can have a standered conservative that thinks women should be more modest, then slowly over times he begins to think women shouldnt go to college, women shouldn't drive, and women should basicaly be slaves to their husband's. That is radicalization.
Looks like Dan and the crew deserve a raise.
I think Ethan pays his employees very well. They've discussed it before. And he says in this that he asks them what they want to earn and pays them at least that.
I’m sure he gets paid well and is happy but Dan ALWAYS deserves a raise.
I know we always dog on Ethan for interrupting people but his ability to really listen to someone and adapt his point of view to what they have to say is really admirable and I wish more people were like that
He’s come along way tbh
I don’t think Ethan does it on purpose tbh , i know plenty of people who interrupt without even realizing it lol
Totally agree. People often forget that he’s used to either hosting with Hila who is fairly reserved and quiet, or hosting by himself with the rest of the crew periodically chiming in. The vast majority of the time he has to talk constantly to keep the show going. A lot of people on the H3 sub gave him a hard time about interrupting but he just needed to adjust to a different conversational format and he’s already made huge strides at episode 3.
It's nice to see someone become more progressive as they age instead of more conservative, gives me hope even if I'm watching my mother become a Neoliberal from a socialist.
agreed - i think with hasan the interruptions are helpful to keep the convo going, theyre both great speakers and ethans interruption dont ever feel out of place. theyve got great back & forth
The conversation about paying people fairly was amazing. A lot of people got a good cliff notes on what socialism actually means. I only have one question. In a Marxist utopia, is there a viable mechanism for Ethan to take that five percent?
LMAO
He would still take that 5%! Lmao!
What's the 5% thing I keep seeing it
pinkmatter Trisha was mad because Ethan made 5% more than she did on frenemies. He paid her 45% of the profits, taking 5% for production costs (in my opinion, it’s completely fair considering his team did all of the work).
@@pinkmatter8488 A reference to a conflict that Ethan had with Trisha Paytas. They made a show called Frenemies, and instead of splitting the income 50/50, he "took" an additional 5% to cover the cost for production etc.
And during their recurring conflicts, Trisha always brought these five percent up, which she thought Ethan had completely unjustifiably stolen from her.
I got so happy when Hasan said people are allowed to change… back in 2016 I watched crowder and acting really got into his beliefs. Now In 2021 I can’t stand the fact I did. Thanks Ethan and hasan ☮️❤️
You was so much smarter before
Pecker is very naive. He lives in fantasy world. In theory these practices sound great but based on human nature these ideals are not feasible
Cuba had all the same wants and believes and tried it’s hardest to make it work
You don’t understand humans to think these things will work there will always be greed and people with skills that raise up it’s not bad
@@TheDegenerateTravler if we are justifying economic systems with human nature then it can be argued that socialism aligns with human nature. Even more so than capitalism. Humans are naturally social creatures that live in large complex groups, and all work together to survive. There’s even evidence to show that human tribes with more altruistic and caring members thrived more, and their genes were passed on more than those who weren’t. (Look up biological altruism!) Of course humans are still selfish and have self interest, but that doesn’t mean we always act on those traits. Wouldn’t it be better to have a system that stays true to human nature or at least shows the best of human qualities rather than one that plays on the selfishness in us and allows the minority to exploit and abuse the majority?
@@tunasub6111 I’m not reading your essay you just wrote.
You are naive and don’t understand people or history to believe socialism could or has worked on large scale making up millions of people in a country.
@@tunasub6111 if you have ten people socialism works
With millions of people it’s impossible
If you’re trying to convince people that it’s better to live in small tribes off of the grid than maybe that would work for less than 1% of people
But the rest of the 99% of people aren’t going to want to live that way
it can’t work on a large scale with the technology we have today
I forgot that it was possible for people to have a respectful debate
You know things are bad when you realise respectful debates arent really a thing on the MSM anymore.
Clickbait: "A respectful debate. Nobody owns anybody."
It's because there's no one here who's entire ideology revolves around hating other people.
I love the moment where Ethan thinks to himself "what possible actual complaint could I have about universal home ownership?" and thinks of nothing and is immediately on board. That my friends, is how you stay intellectually honest.
That was a really nice moment, I wonder if Ethan will wake up in a cold sweat now realizing he has been a conservative all along 🤣
I was so pleasantly surprised there, I gained a ton of respect for Ethan after that exchange. You can tell he initially was like "That sounds stupid" but then instead of doubling down on his preconceived beliefs, he actually stopped, thought about it with an open mind, and then came around to "Actually that sounds like a pretty good idea." I can count the amount of times I've seen someone do that online on one hand.
I actually think everybody in society could do with a lot more of this! We are so concerned with being right or getting the ego hit, it never occurs to us that somebody else might actually have some really good points.
Does someone have a timestamp for this?

Thanks for the clarification, it makes an even better argument.
The Norwegian government owns a very large portion of the economy as well (as a percentage of GDP, not majority owners of most businesses). And the sovereign wealth fund buys shares in American companies and real estate. We might be to able trick right wingers into supporting us doing that in America by riling up the nationalism: “foreigners are buying our country!!! We have to have a sovereign wealth fund so we can buy businesses in Norway and Saudi Arabia to beat the dirty foreigners and be number 1 again!!!!”

They push us to our absolute limit on the line. On dish. Everywhere.Part of me really enjoyed it in the beginning, but over time as our sales have increased and our volume is now so much larger, all the negatives hasan talks about here have started to show. Most days I dont have time or energy to eat before my shift. We have to yell at servers to bring us water so we dont pass out on the line over the grills during hours and hours of cooking and pushing tickets. It bothers me that our health and our needs are second to the company goal: turn a profit. I love my managers, I love my co workers. They make it a lot easier. Which would mean for someone to reach a million dollars it would take them more than 32 years of spending $0 every year and saving every cent. Someone making a "few million dollars a year" is WAY MORE than he is making it seem
Meanwhile I'm out here choosing between paying my student loans and getting medicine for my autoimmune disorder. I'm not a bitter person, they both earned their money but Ethan speaking so bluntly about it can feel alienating sometimes.
I’m glad someone brought this up. I really appreciated the conversation in this episode more than most Leftovers but when I heard that I had a really bad taste in my mouth. I completely agree that the multi billionaires are ridiculous generally and even in comparison to their “ mere millions”. However, it seems like they use the billionaires to justify that their wealth is the “appropriate” or “reasonable” amount. Like, what makes it appropriate is that is the amount that they make. A tad egocentric.
@@TokioLotus I feel that so hard :(
The median salary in the United States is $41,950 in 2020, not $31,000. If you were to invest it at the annualized 3-month Treasury Bill rate which is around 1-2% (also called the risk-free rate), it would 19.7 years to reach $1,000,000. This is a little over 60% of the time you claim. If you simply invested in the S&P 500 (bearing some risk), it would only take 13 years.

The real contradictions of capitalism are automation vs labor, and artificial scarcity vs efficiency. We have an economic system that has people at odds with technical progress. Imagine if our economy didnt incentivize profit motive but instead incentivized automation and open source technology and respected the scientific method for answering objective structural questions. We could whittle the work week down from 40 hours, to 30, to 20, to 10... imagine if our goal was to work as few hours as possible, with the highest economic efficiency as possible. I can only guess it's an attachment to the material culture we live in and people cant think of a world with a completely different economic system that is well structured around our modern understanding of human behavior (especially intrinsic motivations), and the trends of technological development.

Something we never see from lefties. This has to be a deepfake.
@@herpderp3131 As a leftist I can confirm
It certainly has it’s place, but I really don’t understand the extreme need for so much politeness in politics. That’s basically how you arrive at an ineffectual Democratic Party. Decorum over policy. Eagh
I think the biggest differrence here is that people in office HAVE to (supposedly) represent the values of their constituents or rather more accurately the people that helped them put into office (their financial backers unfortunately). Hasan is trying to educate someone who he knows is very much willing to understand and learn and unlike some random on an internet chat room who he'd have no clear way to be able to see their actual intention (its virtual impossible) in such a short span of time. Ethan and Hasan already have a rapport and a relationship that was already built up on where something like this can happen. They're not elected officials, they're commentators/content creators who in this show is largely trying to educate people on things from a different perspective that differs from the usual very liberal, hyper capitalist POV that everyone is very much familiar with.
Wow I forgot a debate could be a productive conversation

To add to what Hasan is saying about class and how you use your money: Engels was a wealthy benefactor of his father's business. He devoted his adult life, with his intellectual partner Karl Marx, to expound the ideas of socialism. I think it is ridiculous to say that no capitalists or millionaires have ever genuinely wanted socialism.
Ethan thinks everyone can be happy under capitalism because he thinks everyone will operate with some level of morals/ethics as he does. He forgets that this is unfortunately not the case. I think most of us working at the bottom of a corporation understand this, and we aren’t happy.
Exactly
But socialism doesn’t solve that. If you don’t have the skills to perform a job you enjoy under capitalism, a central planning agency isn’t going to send you to work a job you don’t have to skills for, you’ll more than likely be stuck at whatever low end production job they place you in, and you won’t be able to change that since the central planning agency decides what role you will fill in society. Atleast under capitalism you can quit, go to school, get some debt, get a higher paying job that you enjoy, and then pay off that debt.
@@brygulligan347 socialism isn’t governmentally assigned jobs, it’s just workers having more rights over their extracted labour. if they’re stuck working under a low paid position, they can still quit and get an education WITHOUT them collecting inflated amounts of debt
@@sam-eg4nn Socialism in practice is a central planning agency since worker cooperatives still operate in free markets and thus are still subject to the “inherent contradiction of capitalism” that many socialists are against. And I’m not sure how that relates to workers quitting and getting an education without debt; education is never free, under socialism people who don’t directly benefit from the education have to pay it for other people, which is more unfair imo.
@@brygulligan347 education is free in a bunch of eu countries actually lol
As someone who is a factory worker for a living while doing college Hassan is 100% right about the annoyance of having no flexibility at all in the work place. It’s annoying, my benefit’s are actually pretty good but I don’t get much vacation time and might have to drop work to do school which is annoying brcause my job won’t work around it and will fire me if I ask, that’s why I haven’t took their 30k of tuition reimbursement
For real, if it weren’t for the pandemic putting a lot of classes online Idk how I would’ve continued school and work. I was asked to apply for a promotion, but you had to have a minimum of 80 hours of open availability to work for that position. ????? Basically fork over your life for this position, thanks
this is also one of the issues with ethan's proposal of why just paying more to your workers and not being AS greedy isn't a solution: because our workplaces are still little dictatorships. when you work under a capitalist, you don't have any say in your workplace, nor claim to your own labor. you can do something that saves the company thousands of dollars, and they'll pay you the exact same--or worse yet fire you tomorrow because you showed up to work late. it's a lot about autonomy and democracy.
under a democratic workplace, you would not only get the benefits of making more money because labor is distributed--if not equal, then at least in a way that everyone agreed with--but also get to decide collectively how much you all want to do.
like, imagine the end of the year comes and your econ department comes out with a report and is like, "so our production was really good this year, we can afford to work a day less in the week and make the same amount." now not only are you making good money, but you have more free time. this can only happen in an environment where the workers get a fair say, because in our current system what would happen is that the bosses/owners would up production, everyone has to pick up an extra few hours, MAYBE pay everyone a quarter extra, and then the bosses get a five to six figure raise.
Well of course they won't work around that if getting your education involves leaving that company in the end. Which is a perfect example why furthering education should be publicly funded just like basic education is.
In Sweden we are starting to see a shift..
I’m an engineer at Volvo AB. We have been working from home this whole covid stint and now even as our society is opening up, Volvo has decided that the teams can decide for themselves how they want to work (in the office or at home) our team has decided that we only need to come in once every week, just so we socialize..
Our biggest union made a poll asking if the union members would like to continue working from home after covid and 75% answered yes..
I think COVID was the start of a worker revolution spanning all across different professions personally (living in rural Sweden) covid was probably one of the best things that happened to me and my family.
