LavenderTowne is literally the reason I’m still drawing, and trying to improve. I love her style, I love your style, and I’m trying to include both of them in the style I’m developing now. Also, I really wish I could support your patron, but I can’t right now. If I ever can, though, I definitely will.

Is started drawing some time ago and let’s just say it wasn’t that good.. so I kinda stopped. But then I started watching LavenderTowne and Duchess Celestia and eventually came back to it. And I’m trying to include them both as well

For me when I started developing my style more in early 2021 I would decide to drastically change the pen(s) i used, the styles, and through that picked which aspect of each i enjoyed most and slowly started putting them together to develop an art style i enjoy drawing in and feel comfortable using.

Omg the improvement in your art is amazing!!
For me my journey was- rough at times. I began taking art seriously as a skill at about 11 or 12, which compared to now is quite a late start- and for a long time I thought I had started too late. Many of my peers were already past my skill level, which made me feel really invalid and like I was just doomed to never get better at art.
I wanted to quit several times because I thought I would never get good enough, now after having been drawing as a hobbyist for 6 or 7 years, I've learned a lot! I'm at a place where I'm finally happy with what I'm creating, and overtime I began to realize that I was being too harsh on myself. Its something I still struggle with even now, but I've been getting much better about lifting myself up rather than tearing myself down.
EDIT: By the way I forgot to add, that Vtuber model is absolutely ADORABLE 💙

What made me really start to improve was my UA-cam channel. When I actually managed to garner an audience, I really wanted to improve so I could make better content for them. Due to that, I’ve gotten better in the past year then any other time in my life. It’s actually kinda crazy lol

Honestly I will say I have ignored Art for a while as my mind thought “eh I’m not that good, I haven’t dedicated that much time to it, and I see myself as a computer guy anyway.” So I have more or less ignored it.
But then I started an animation class, and suddenly I started enjoying just simple sketching and some digital drawing. And I’m trying my best to improve best I can. Now I am nowhere near amazing, I still have a long way to go, but honestly I’m glad that boundary got pushed even if it’s not something I see myself doing professionally still. I’ll watch videos like this a lot and honestly still will thank you for talking about your journey and will take those points in mind for improvement.

I started drawing around 5 years ago when I was 13. Bee and Puppycat ended up kick-starting my journey. Originally, I didn't use any reference and I just drew on a crappy notebook. During that time I watched a lot of DeviantArt rants which made me afraid of copying anime artwork to a T. This fear of being seen as derivative made me take smaller elements from other styles into my own work instead of getting heavily inspired by one style. Eventually, I discovered Ethan Becker, and no joke his videos made me cry at first. But his advice ended up helping me like crazy and I started using references more. However, during the entirety of my art career I struggled with anatomy and proportions, but recently I watched a video from Some Normal Artist on proportions and he explained it in a way that finally made sense to me.

I've had a very tunnel vision approach to art which has left me feeling pretty bad, I've been trying to make a comic series (I have thousands of concept drawings) but never felt like I was good enough... I decided to slow down a little bit to just breathe and learn why I am not "good enough" for myself. Wish me luck.

    The tips in the video:
    1. Online learning platforms, such as Wingfox or Skillshare, are super helpful.
    2. Be realistic. Don't beat yourself up for not producing perfect art. Just focus on improving from piece to piece and doing your best with where you're at.
    3. Break down the art you envy into the particular things you like about it. Study those particular elements rather than mimicking the whole.
    4. Studies! Try drawing all sorts of subjects, poses, body types, etc. Diversify what you study. This is for yourself to learn with, so it doesn't have to be gorgeous.
    5. References! Even if you know what you're doing. references for any and all elements of your art will help you refine it. Pros do it too and often use multiple refs for a single piece.
    6. In digital art-layers! They can cause elements to be separate and disconnected. Less layers can be helpful in making things more cohesive.
    7. In Digital art-Color Palette 'hack'. Overlay the colors you want to use with a background color and adjust opacity to preference. Use those as your color palette.
8, Use more than one color for shading and highlighting to add more depth.
    9. Use different line weights in your lineart. Thicker lines in areas of shadow, connecting lines, foreground. Thinner lines for detailing, things at a distance, areas in the light.
Hope this is helpful! I like having the lists to look back on or follow along with while I watch these sorts of videos. Definitely watch for her full explanation bc this list doesn't fully capture what Duchess is advising(especially the layers and shade/highlight tips imo.).

LOL is indeed a dumbster fire. Dota2 is much better. Ive only been playing for like 5 years and Im already in the top 5%, and its so nice and chill one you mute everyone... honestly for the game to be fun you either have to play rarely, play with your friends, or hope for one of those very rare amazing games when you get actually good team mates. Art its what I dont like about LOL, it looks like a mobile game. Here dota is truly better looking like a proper videogame.

One of the things I found really helped my art was actually this art swap challenge thing with my friends. Basically everyone makes a sketch, then passed it to the next person who makes line art, and then onto the final rotation for the render. It makes you experiment and push to make your part match the others, but also stand out and look cool for itself. Obviously this challenge in particular won't work for everyone, but having a group of people to grow alongside can make for some crazy experiments, lots of fun, and some pretty cool improvements to in my experience.

I got better at my art when I started turning my stories into manga.
I wanted to use fight scenes and dramatic poses to make everything dynamic.
Just learning how to place the panels correctly to tell the story really well helped me.
So yes, it's true, I have hundreds of references for everything to properly draw what I'm depicting.
I even had to pose in front of a camera myself to be able to draw the exact pose I wanted.
You learn so much doing it. Not only to draw people, but also to draw backgrounds.
I always do a floor plan of a room beforehand so I don't mess things up or forget where things are.
    Because... someone always notices!XD
I even studied horses because they appear at some point in my story
and even filmed a friend riding her horse. So it's true.
The more you learn, the faster you'll learn how to draw things correctly.
This is a really good video! Good work! Thanks for that!♥

Hearing you say you’ve drawn for 10 years, been doing it professionally for 6 and only improved over quarantine really made me feel better. I don’t plan to look into art as a profession, I just want it to be a fun side hobby, writing is my main focus, however, I’ve been really hard on my art despite not even aiming for it to be professional. I’ve been drawing for five years, and while my art has improved in tiny aspects, my art style is relatively the same as it was when I first drew. Since quarantine I’ve fallen into a depression, and even though Covid getting better this year-probably gonna be around for awhile longer though-I still haven’t fully felt happy and my art has been the one thing that’s been damaged the most. Even as of typing this I haven’t drawn for weeks, and I’m still in many bad habits that I need to break. Not using references, not taking time to practice, thinking every piece needs to be perfect, etc. I’ve watched a lot of other art commentary vids in the past about this subject and a lot of the time even if the commentator was nice about artist skill levels, I always took them saying stuff as a personal attack, which is more of me problem then them. But, this is the first video where I really feel validated, and not want to beat myself up for my skill level. I’m going to set reasonable expectations for myself, it’s ok if my art never gets to a professional level cause I don’t plan to make it my job, it’s just my hobby, but I’m still going to make it look as good as it can because I want to draw my favorite characters and my own characters in a really cool art style. I really appreciate this video, thank you for sharing your art experiences and I know you’ll reach the goal you want one day.

This is honestly an interesting video, and as a digital artist for 5, going on 6 years, what has helped me improve and understand my art is using colored line art in my colored pieces, but also to study my values by drawing in grayscale (which I am using for my comic :D ). I feel like I don't have to be self-concious about my unsteady hand and what I need to use for like shadows. While manually selecting my colors and lining those portions is tough as balls, it honestly is worth it compared to where I started off with my HORRIBLE painterly style. And on top of that, I also used to draw with just my imagination and memory, but now I use references and how-to-draw videos to help me improve on certain things like clothing, backgrounds, hair textures, and the like! I'm glad that you were able to improve quickly, and I wish I could say the same for me, but it took me 5 years to get where I am now, and a SHIT ton of trial and error (went through 4, no.. FIVE style changes in my digital art, and it was NOT easy). I wish the best of luck for you on your journey Celestia ❤❤❤

Art school was very suffocating for me. Art professors tend to be "fine art" focused and unintentionally look down on more stylistic art. The entire time I was just practicing anatomy and painting techniques but never got to explore actual artistic expression and personal growth. It definitely helped my basic abilities, but my actual art suffered and didn't start to flourish until after I graduated and started independent study.

I have a question , how do find things that you like about the art , rather than " I just like this art"? I mean all of the art styles i like have contradicting features that I both like. Also I don't know how to describe the things I like or how the things were drawn....

This summer, I was watching art videos in the background while I was playing genshin and I saw how the artist colored their lineart and it looked very good
So I went onto procreate and drew something and colored the lineart, it looked so good compared to black lineart
I couldn't believe how stubborn I was for so many years by refusing to color by lineart anything other then black
I also one day was doodling on a notebook when i tried to shade hair in a less cartoony way then i usually do then decided to experiment with that hair shading style on my art, and it turned out great!

For me, I have improved a lot in 2020, because I stopped the whole mindset of “I can never be like them, so I will not even try” to “oh I can be like that if I studied anatomy, color theory, etc”. And every time I find something I am not good at, I observe other people art, finding what makes their pieces so appealing. Now I am try to do realism, even though I can from an anime art style, but I love the challenge, it was frustrating at first, but I started to just like doing small details.

My experience might be a bit different, since I have aphantasia and primarily do traditional art, but
    - Have an art style, that I don't necessarily want to emulate, but am inspired by/want my art to have aspects of
Basically, I use a bunch of references of the Panty & Stockings art style (and, eventually, the Puyo Fever and Puyo Tetris artstyle), when I'm drawing. But my art style, doesn't really exactly look like the P&S. I'm just emulating certain aspects of it
    - Use multiple different types of references, when creating a character
I'm, primarily a furry artist. So when I create a character, unless I'm trying to turn one of my plush toys into a character, I typically have 2-3 "types" of references
    1. A character I made, in an app called Monster Girl Maker 2. This is basically just to get a rough idea, of how the character might look. It's also helpful, if I don't really have a colour palette in mind
    2. Look up pictures of the animal
This's kinda like looking up references for sleeves. Even if I have a vague idea of what the animal looks like, it's really helpful to have references of the real animal
    3. Look up images, of others... Anthro drawings, of the animal
Kinda like the art style thing, I'm not trying to replicate how they draw the animal exactly. It's just for inspiration
It's also helpful, to see how they interpret it
    ... Basically
    "References, references everywhere"

What has really helped me improve on my art has varied but the biggest thing is finding a big artistic muse to fixate on so heavily where I just have a plethora of ideas and muse to keep drawing. It keeps me practicing and makes art fun which at the end of the day is the biggest thing that helps keep the passion alive. My art at drawing the characters in question has improved tenfold alongside other things like colouring and the like. It's just fun.

I absolutely adore your videos. I always binge watch/ listen while drawing or cleaning house.
Sometimes it just takes that push to want to improve. I improved in my art dramatically this last year because I actually started putting more effort into what I draw. I got accepted to art school, so that was the point I realized that "if this is what you want to do for the rest of your life, it's time to take action!" So I actively drew more, studied the masters, took more lessons on anatomy and life drawing. My art has taken a drastic turn from cute anime boys with no background to an array of young, old, cute, gruffy (still anime) boys and girls with scenic images cause I love drawing backgrounds now, ironically, lol.
Seeing as how you got your inspiration from League, mine came from manga cause I had this short period during the quarantine where I just binged manga and became sad because I felt my art was nowhere near that good. Now look.

There were so many awesome tips in this video that show you've really learned so much over the past year- and it's well-reflected in your recent art as well! As someone who started watching your channel and following your page on Insta around or a little over a year ago, it's been quite amazing seeing your art grow over time!

I love how you draw your lines, and how you do lighting.. I've been staring at your work to try to figure out both. Line-weight is something I struggle with so it's pretty encouraging to hear the artists I admire say they're also working on improving. Trusting the process is rough sometimes

This video is very helpful! Also I’ve improved in the past year I’ve learned to push myself in a good way, but I’ve also learned its a double edged sword, what I’d say about art is push yourself but go back to your comfort zone if you really need to you don’t go back because you can’t draw, you go back because you need a break from pushing yourself.
Remember always take a break when needed no one will judge you for taking care of yourself

One thing I learned the hard way was to research good references BEFORE starting to draw, makes a big difference when you got things ready, rather than tumbling through google images or something

IDK I like the old style more. Now the eyes are too big and close together imo. Facial features too simple.

I really love your line art and how you draw clothes on general. Lineart, shading, folds...i just really like it for some reason. Hopefully i will get to that level!
