      +1 Agree completely, Git, Gitlab and Github communities are the fuel to the fire that change old mentalities and provide real value in the enterprise, open source legacy will always be to someone preserve the right code and ideas longer than the physical or statutory life of a company, every recession take its toll of good ideas extinct by economic circumstances specially in software.

      I can't imagine Bill Gates using that tone if he was addressing them in person, even if he wrote it in that tone. Of course tone is an incredibley important part of communication as it ilicits feeling from the listener. By making the choice to use that tone when reading Bill's letter it brings incredible bias against his raised points to the listener. But such are the risks with text as the reader adds tone.

      In disclosure I am of a similar opinion to Linus where he believes there should be both proprietry and open source software out there. What I dislike is the gun held to the head subscription EULA situation that is pervasive arround the world where only one side has all the power to change the conditions at the drop of a hat and you lose access if you no longer agree. It is an inequitable bargin that brings frustration when there was a time when you buy software its yours to use forever.

    I really got into Linux around 1999. Used to carry my Gateway tower, CRT (17") and everything to and from work every night. I worked as a manual ledger auditor for a motel that isn't here anymore; Castle Motel. I remember ordering a copy of Mandrake via mail. I was using Slack mostly. But I installed and reformatted hundreds of times, just learning. In 2001 I got my first job as a Field Service Tech, I am now a Systems Admin II. It was ALL because of the wonder, hunger, whatever it is, it is visceral; that laches on to you once you start poking around in some source code, and computer systems. It's given me an amazing career, when I had ZERO hope for one. I love Linux, hands down. 22 years now as a professional nerd. It's rare that one gets to do what they love for a living.

      If it’s going to be revised, can we go ahead and make it longer so that (a) we can get rid of some of the rapid, near-breathless voiceovers which are simply jarring, and (b) can we get rid of, or radically improve and tone down, the background music?
      The documentary, as it is, reeks of over-acted drama, when the real story behind it has more than enough drama to go around.

Any time some new game or software pops up only for windows, if Linux doesn't already have an alternative or if it wont run in wine, I don't need it. The older I get the more I see the paradox and irony of the whole situation; Stallman is a fair-dinkum American in not just his enterprising spirit ("I must build the world I want") but also in his crystallised view of Freedom and yet the success of his message (or lack of) is due to it being drowned out by much louder, more effective messages coming from yet another chamber of America's heart, corporate capitalism.

    I do wonder if the open source development of design programs and security protocols will in time shift the market away from proprietary services and instead allow for ventures to capitalise on providing customer service instead. As it stands the invested shareholders have a large stake in keeping their intellectual property exclusive and their staff repleted with promising talent. The next big advancement has in my mind always been optimisation of functional software with optional feature updates, rather than proprietary bloatware.
    It looks like marketing has taken precedence over allowing for market functioning.
    Open source CAD programs, game engines, even monitoring software doesn’t seem to have made much ground in comparison to the OS. It begs the question why.

      I’m a bit late but I just want to add that Linux is super easy. In fact Android is Linux. Termux is just a terminal that he can use to run commands. Don’t be afraid to try Linux. Take Linux mint (cinnamon and xfce) or Kubuntu or Kde neon for example.

      @b00gi3 8 місяців тому

      Totally easy. Perhaps the easiest thing to start with is something like Ubuntu (I think Ubuntu Studio is the better fork and version), but from there move on to more free and libre (and lightweight) distros as you gain more experience. Something like MX GNU linux is very user friendly, but also lightweight and more free / libre. Also worth looking at FSF recommended operating systems, but it's a short list due to the amount of time it takes to completely review all the lines of code in an OS to ensure it is all free and libre.

      Richard Stallman was the real hero. Now GNU is essentially hijacked by Linux, and free software movement and ideology is hijacked by open source. And finally corporations have hijacked Linux. It makes billions per quarter for Google, Microsoft etc. and spies everyone through Android, companies use Linux servers to make more money. And there's almost no change of cheap Linux laptops now after Chromebooks, and almost zero chance for Linux smartphones.
      Stallman was absolutely right the whole time. In many ways we would be better off by not having the success of Linux is it would have allowed free software to be intact. Though only time will tell. I kind of feel Linus Torvalds phucked up, or he either was too egotistical and just wanted Linux to spread and not really care about the ideological aspect, which in my mind is the most important part. And I find that person who doesn't agree with this is probably not that wise or knowledgeable on how this world is ran.
      Lets hope that we get Risc V CPUs without hardware backdoors on desktop and laptop computers, and on smartphones. And hopefully we get some killer Linux distro for those computers and some mobile Linux for smartphones. Things could change quickly, but it requires luck and activism from those who know this issue.

    How exactly are passwords helping the administrator control the user?

    • @eusebiusthunked5259
      @eusebiusthunked5259 2 роки тому +1

      In this scenario, the userS, are collectively a class mutually supporting each other as equals in what they create. Nobody has any more power than anyone else in this union, and everyone is therefore accountable to each other.
      When an individual can be isolated from the others, that makes them subject to the managerial class. When one person can control the access that others have to each other, this breaks the community mutual accountability dynamic such that the admin can assert control. Choosing passwords with which to restrict your resources from the rest of the user community is consent to being controlled.
      Note that this doesn't apply in contemporary circumstances, rather this applies to the communities around each computer of the time before internetworking with complete strangers was common.
