  • When camping in a swamp, Wetlands or any area that's muddy, slushy or wet, its always a struggle finding places to put gear or other items to keep them dry. I found a Tri Sail shade tarp at a Bargain Bin for two dollars and was inspired to test a radical new set up! Lets see how this goes.

    Lemmee tell you Brother- I’ve been watching you and Nick for years and I have not once been bored. You put in the work to do these videos to help folks who are going to the woods for maybe the first time or maybe they are like me and get out into the boonies at every opportunity. If people want to use a hammock- fine. Go to the woods when they are dripping and muddy and let us know how that worked out for you. Dave and Nick do the “grunt” work for us and I appreciate it. I miss Nick on this one- his commentary is priceless! As I’ve said before- I wish that I owned a rope company!😊

    The triangular hammock tents use ratchet straps for holding them up. You could sew on extra webbing to strengthen the corners. I love your idea of putting one corner up against a tree. Hammock straps crossed under the tarp like the Mercedes logo would provide center support. I have a big sun shade over my back porch area, never thought about using a smaller one for a hammock. You were maybe the first one that came up on my UA-cam to teach woodscraft. I have such a collection of bungee cords. Of all sizes and having different ends on them.😅 But they are so useful. And love that you teach things different from everyone else. But my first knowledge of skill is directly because of you and your videos. Matter of fact, because of you I learned to wrap boat paddles with the Navy spirals and make the knots. I believe they are called boarshead knots at the top and bottom of the paddles. I wound up giving them as Christmas gifts to my son and 2 grandsons. So 3 gifts. Later I found a small paddle with some nice wood. Then wrapped that paddle and added ties to that one as well that is my 23:41 own personal paddle that is decorative for our houseboat. Something I never would have even thought to try. And my boys all treasure theirs as well. They did turn out nice and Grandma made them.😊 Thanks for all your knowledge and time you have taken to teach us. And see Nick grow up as well.

I thought were great. Can't believe it's been 10 years!! But seeing you make your camping gear made it all seem more doable. And started putting together my own gear little by little. Some from Walmart some from dollar stores etc. Then began to put together bug out bags. And watching your videos along the way. You could tie or pull/prop up the 2 mid-tarp loops along your body to provide more space on the actual sleeping area. I'd also try laying the pack or other weighty object on the corner opposite your mattress to potentially provide drainage if it rains.

      I have an idea: If you can cut the large triangle in half so as to make two triangles out of it, the next time you use a tarp to make an A-frame tent you can use the two smaller triangles on the ends.

    I wonder if it would work better to weave something similar to a space net with a matching footprint of the tarp. Since you have a tarp the weave of the net doesn't have to be nearly as tight, and having it woven would probably make it a whole lot easier to set up, tension, and give you a way more consistent strength across it. Definitely brings up some interesting ideas.

    • @Reallybigmonkey1
      @Reallybigmonkey1  10 місяців тому +1

      That's a good possibly. I may just get extra rope and weave a triangular net to test

    • @JonStockman82
      @JonStockman82 10 місяців тому +1

      @@Reallybigmonkey1 you could create a triangular main loop with rope and a steel loop at each point.
      Wrap each point behind the loop with paracord to hold it in place and weave a triangular pattern net within the triangle using paracord and binding it in a uniformed pattern.
      Lotta work but I've seen the effort you put into past projects.

    One of the best American films has to be...For a few dollars more....a real classic..... I think it's been superseded by Ol Dave's... For a few dollars less😀😀😀. This was a real tonic after seeing so many videos on expensive, new outdoor equipment costing hundreds of pounds.... dollars for your country...to seeing this, costing almost nothing. A great incentive to those on low budgets as to what can be achieved on almost nothing. For me, this was the takeaway bit of this excellent video. That bed did look comfortable and I bet that tarp will last as good as any. Thanks again for the great, indicative, For a few dollars less... video 😂👍

    I liked how you presented the video. Having fun doing it and talking about how you're going to be setting it up.
    Most of the other UA-cam videos I have watched are too serious and skip areas or don't show every little detail.
    I have done a design like this before but with a square canvas trap. I work in and play in the mountains so seeing what others do helps to improve and pack light weight into the mountains.
    Weight and space means a lot went your limited on how much you can pack inside a pack horse container.

    Those Sun Shade Sail Tarps usually come with poles and coil springs for the tie out points so as a strong wind won't shred them. You used Bungees and have it set lower so a fair trade off. You might consider using an existing Cargo Net to support the tarp or with your sewing skills, you could make your own woven mattress support from Seat Belt material with D Rings for your tie outs. I think that I would still put my lightweight hammock over the tarp itself or at least a Mossie net and a nice aluminium tea tray to support my stove. This project has endless possibilities as long as it doesn't become a cash cow and weigh a ton. 👍
