This is so gorgeous! It’s been several years since you posted this. Could you do another similar one where you take the viewer through the process with more details? Like how you’ve used the wax crayon.
+Patricia Leisure Thanks! I use both watercolor artist's wax crayons and white birthday candles. Here's a link to my lesson on using wax resist: paintingwatercolor.com/Art-Lessons/Art-Lesson-Wax-Resist.html Happy Painting!
Brilliant tutorial again. Made me feel summery and warm with snow forecast for the Alps tonight! I loved the highlight top right just on the edge of the fronds and was holding my breath while you finished painting because I didn't want you to paint over it....but it was obviously well planned. Moving water is my bugbear as well, I would love to see a tutorial on fast flowing water. I love the waterfall painting. Thanks again for sharing.
+LibellulaGlass Thank you! With temperatures still in the high 90's (35C) most of the time it doesn't seem like summer is ending, but it's still so short. I had to get in a palm tree for summer! My favorite times for sketching outside are definitely fall and spring here. There's not enough snow here to sketch! Watercolor paintings need to have a firm goal but change as the paint flows. It's a fun process once you get used to taking risks with every painting! Waterfall asap! :)
Gorgeous palm tree! I'm so glad you did this tutorial. We live in Southern California and palm trees are everywhere! I really love your boat tutorials and anything with oceans, lakes...basically water!!! One thing I admire seeing but can never seem to do is "waterfalls". It takes tremendous patience and the ability not to over-do it....or over paint them??...because water is clear to begin with right? lol At least that's the theory when it's rushing over a fall whether it's a big fall or a little babbling brook. Could one of your future tutorials be a waterfall of some kind? thanks for posting these wonderful tutorials. ;)
+Sylvia Catalano Oh good, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I just had to get in a palm tree before summer was over. I love painting them because of the contrasting layers. Painting water does go with watercolor painting, doesn't it? Waterfalls are tricky with foamy, moving translucence. I have a perfect one I want to show you all on location, but I haven't had a chance to yet. Here's a waterfall painting of mine from North Georgia for ideas: jenniferbranch.com/j/Paintings/Chattooga-Waterfall-Watercolor-Painting.html I kept that one since it's from a favorite camping spot. Thank you for the suggestions! I very much appreciate them. Happy painting!
Yes!!!! Omg, THAT waterfall pic is the perfect example of what I'd love to paint. How on earth do you paint that swirling water and those little white splashes. I wish you'd done a 1 or 2 hour tutorial on that bad boy. Awesome waterfall, Jen. ;)
+Sylvia Catalano Thanks! That one was 15 years ago when I was still selling vhs workshop videos - wow time flies. :) One of my favorites still. Some paintings just work even if time improves skills. Some tips are wax, white gouache and a lot of layers. I'll do a waterfall as soon as I can!
I love the layering of colors. It makes the painting look vibrant.
+Elizabeth Brandon Thank you! I think it makes the light and color dance a bit with distinct layers in the palm tree.
Looks like a palmetto tree to me, not a palm. Good work
It is a palmetto. Thanks!

It is very unique watercolor painting.
Love your tutorials!
Lively effect!!🎉
Beautiful!
I really enjoyed watching how you created this...your narration is good too! Have you ever done a peacock?
+Noreen M thanks! I've never done a peacock. Hmmm... That would be gorgeous!
COOL!
Thanks Jennifer. From Jennifer
I love this! What is this wax you referred to and how did you use that?

Love this ,but I love all of ur paintings.do u think we could do some paintings without drawing first?
I hope the recent sketches answered this request! It really depends on the subject how much drawing I do.
