  • Jackie Smerdon, a qualified adult tutor, is in Dunnock Studio to help you paint your own watercolour wheel, plus ways of using it to choose colour schemes.
Primary colours used on first wheel were:
cadmium yellow, cadmium red and ultramarine blue
Primary colours used on second wheel were:
lemon yellow, alizarin crimson and ultramarine blue
Primary colours are impossible to mix from other colours, but you can make most colours from them. It's not easy, but it is fun to experiment.
Mixing two primary colours together produces secondary colours (green, orange and violet).
Mixing a secondary back towards one of the primaries each side produces a tertiary colour (blue or red violet, blue or yellow green, and red or yellow orange). You can mix up infinite numbers of each type of colour.
Don't be disheartened if the colours don't mix right to begin with, just keep trying! Try making patterns or create bookmarks or cards with your colour swatching.
Remember some colours are very hard to mix yourself - turquoise is one of them and pink is another. The main purpose of mixing your own colours is so you can make colours that are unique to you instead of what comes direct out of a pan or tube. Once you know the colours that reflect your true self, you can then buy those colours separately if you wish. That way you will build your own personal palette of colours.
Once you have your set of colours, you will know how to adjust every pan or tube to suit your painting by adding another colour in. That way you will never end up with a bland, uninspired painting. Good luck and Happy Painting!
