Just watched an LL COOL J documentary. After he wrote the song "I need love" he was heavily scrutinized and criticised in the industry from 87-90 with that track. Pretty sure he was not knocking guys out but I may be wrong. Just saying this is a tough guy saying tough guy words who lives with his mom at the end of the song. LL. Cool aside...it is just the way it was scripted that makes your joke not work. I think we was trying to NOT be a tough guy in this which is the main point of my articulation.
@@teddyhammer2558 no he was not knocking fuckers out, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t, J was still a street man, who could fuck anyone out. While it is a script he is still a tough guy
It was start and almost immediate end of the "nice" rapping, like Kris Kross as well as the end of the R&B/New Jack craze with folks like Bel Biv Davoe, Bobby Brown...etc. It was all so wholesome. Then Dre came along and gangster rap took over. Which was/is great, just different.
Axl Rosr thought so and wanted to go on tour with LL. Unfortunately, Metallica wasn't having "black" rappers open for them. Funny how racist u could be 30 years ago.
I'm french and was born in 1972. I was a teenager when US Rap was introducing our country. I'd like his projects. Sampling became a new norm wich create a musical revolution. He was not the one cause there where a lot of people in da place at that time. PE, Ice Cube, Run-DMC, NWA and Ice T also with "Body count" again at time. In France all of them inspired a lot of Hip-Hop bands. Still love forever. 😉
This song basically "knocked out" Ice T's rap career. Everybody from this era knows this was aimed at Ice T, who is a rap legend. I love HUSTLER, but after this record came out, Ice T never regained the same momentum ever again Hip-Hop wise. Nothing he did since was on par with Hustler. LL made hit albums/records all the way up into the mid-late 2000s and STILL did had the same success in mainstream movie and TV acting that Ice T has.
LL Cool J is an artist beyound measure, the older I get the more I see in his music. Thank God for J. This song is like light years aheead of its time. If he made and released this today it'd be #1 (Same for Cali).PE might disagree
Enemy-Decepticon: "Wait I thought Scourge killed u?... why won't u stay dead?!" *AUTOBOTS entry be like* ~DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK!...~ 🐝: " I've come to kick asses!"
Marley's a beast for producing this. FUN FACT: In the beginning when L.L. says, "C'mon man,", well, the engineer was taking forever to cue the track and L.L. was getting upset, so he was like, "C'mon man,", and Marley decided to keep it in there, and the rest is history!!
Reminds me of the Michael Jackson 'Beat It' song. There's a part you can hear knocking on the song because someone was actually knocking on the studio window glass, and Quincey Jones decided to keep it in. Also in the Jackson 5 song 'I'll Be There" he messed up the line about looking over the shoulder but they decided to leave it, flaws and all.
The Vevo date description is incorrect saying 1995. The album "Mama Said Knock You Out" was released in September of 1990, and this song of the same name was the fourth single off the album. This music video came out in early 1991.
The percussives in his voice hit accurate like an atomic clock, that's some amazing vocal work. And I really appreciate the delay/reverb on it, it's like you can hear the brick walls and concrete.

lyrics:
Don't call it a comeback, I been here for years
I'm rockin' my peers, puttin' suckers in fear
Makin' the tears rain down like a monsoon
Listen to the bass go boom
Explosions, overpowerin'
Over the competition, I'm towerin'
Wrecking shop, when I drop
These lyrics that'll make you call the cops
Don't you dare stare
You better move, don't ever compare
Me to the rest that'll all get sliced and diced
Competition's payin' the price
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)
Mama said knock you out (Huuh)
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)
Mama said knock you out (Huuh)
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)
Mama said knock you out (Huuh)
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)
Mama said knock you out (Huuh)
Don't you call this a regular jam
I'm gonna rock this land
I'm gonna take this itty-bitty world by storm
And I'm just getting warm
Just like Muhammad Ali, they called him Cassius
Watch me bash this beat like a skull
Don'tcha know I had beef wit'
Why do you riff with me, a maniac psycho
And when I pull out my jammy, get ready 'cause it might go
Blauh! How ya like me now?
The ripper will not allow
You to get wit' Mr. Smith don't riff
Listen to my gear shift
I'm blastin', outlastin'
Kinda like shaft, so you could say I'm shaftin'
Olde English filled my mind
And I came up with a funky rhyme
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)
Mama said knock you out (Huuh)
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)
Mama said knock you out (Huuh)
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)
Mama said knock you out (Huuh)
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)
Mama said knock you out (Huuh)

Shadow boxin' when I heard you on the radio
Uuh, I just don't know
What made you forget that I was raw?
But now I gotta new tour
I'm going insane startin' a hurricane, releasin' pain
Lettin' you know, you can't gain or maintain
Unless you say my name
Rippin', killin', diggin' and drillin' a hole
Pass the Ol' Gold

Shotgun blasts are heard
When I rip and kill, at will
The man of the hour, tower of power, I'll devour
I'm gonna tie you up and let you understand
That I'm not your average man
When I gotta jammy in my hand
Damn, ooh
Listen to the way I slay, your crew
Damage (Uhh), damage (Uhh), damage (Uhh), damage
Destruction, terror and mayhem
Pass me a sissy, so suckas I'll slay him
Farmers (What), farmers (What?)
I'm ready! (We're ready)
I think I'm gonna bomb a town (Get down)
Don't you never, ever, pull my lever
'Cause I explode
And my nine is easy to load
I gotta thank God
'Cause he gave me the strength to rock, hard
Knock you out, mama said knock you out (Huuh)
I'm gonna knock you out (Huuh)

Almost everyone in the 80’s early 90’s used Funky Drummer!
Well he didn't make any money off it everybody else did lol
You can apply this song to every aspect of your life. Such as fighting a disease, exercising or pursuing a career. There is no challenge you can't overcome!
Even dealing with an abusive relationship.
Never thought of it that way...
Thank you so much, Internet stranger, you've no idea how much I needed this today (without realising, as I was on the canvas) and how much this will help me!

And could rap out an excellent without a single cuss word.
Don’t call it a comeback, I been here for years…
I was in high school when this came out. I graduated in 91. This was all over the place.

An absolute hip-hop classic and still one of the hardest tracks around! LL Cool J literally knocked this one out!

@@TheisExplainsHowTo Marley has a video breaking down the song, and it's true.
