  • Pike fishing with deadbaits and decided to give Circle hooks a try over the snap tackle (treble hooks). On this day Ryan (insta @rodadventures) joined me to film and have a laugh. Hope you enjoy it.

You're covering the hook point with the bait. You need to "shallow" hook the bait and be sure the bait doesn't cover the hook point. Let the pike feel some resistance from a tight line, let it run (hopefully in the opposite direction), THEN start reeling in.

I was also thinking that for the bait he put on, the hook looked a bit small

Great video. I use circles for pike and perch. Hooking the baits in the back seem to work around 70% of the time for pike. for perch I hook them in the back and nose both seem to work decently. bait size seems to make a big difference. The bigger the bait the harder it seems to be to get a good hook up. I tend to stick to medium roach for pike if using circle hooks. But It is a work in progress. Rivers seem to be easier to get far more solid hook ups I think because they are taking the baits and turning more in the flow. I'm usually twitching the baits in the river under the float. Might help get a more aggressive take. They are worth persisting with I think. Hope it helps. Good fishing. 👍

Great vid. I only use circle hooks on deadbaits and livebaits for pike. I place the hook through the mouth and up through the snoot. My preference is a 3/0 circle tied to 30 lb fluoro leader. When the pike takes, I give him a good 10-30 seconds before I turn the handle crank. No need to set the hook... the pike does that. Always try to get the pike to move away. 90+ per cent success rate. Good luck to you!

It's usually best if a circle hook can be snelled to pull the point into the corner of the mouth. I'd try a 50lb mono or fluorocarbon hook length.
When I've shark fished we do just put the circle hook on a loop on a wire leader. I suspect those pike were holding the bait in the middle of the body and the circle hook wasn't in the fish's mouth at all.

Seen that giant hook set and had to pause the video and check the title because i was certain it said you were using circles haha

Nice video. I haven’t used circles yet but do fancy trying them. Have a look at Heads First Deadbait Rigs. They make theirs more like a carp hair rig, which might work better for you. Hope you do a follow up video using circles again to see if you’ve cracked it!

I forgot the link to the VMC Ryder hooks afaik , they are not sold in Ireland/UK etc , but tackle dealers should be able to get them , small hook goes into dead bait as said ; if hooking bait in the middle , I trap the trace with bait elastic - you can make a two hook trace as well of course - it still reduces the hook count over double trebles www.pecheur.com/achat-hamecon-double-vmc-ryder-9902-bz-19555.html

Update - managed to get loads of circle hooks in different sizes - all useless for me . The wire gauge is too heavy and I cannot straighten the hooks in snag tests - the Cannelle traces snap . So does heavy duty flourocarbon . They might be OK if you fish where there are no snags , the lighter wire versions for dropshot ( wacky hooks) are no good , the sizes are too small . I'v e gone back to VMC Ryder hooks , these are double , but I only use one with bait elastic , with the small hook in the deadbait and the barb crimped down on the the large hook .

Tbh every decent quality hook wouldn't bend under pressure, particularly single hooks are generally more robust compared to trebles. I know that in snaggy areas bending the hooks may be an advantage, but if you're able to bend the hooks the fish will be able to do so as well. So pros and cons in both situations I'd say.
There may be some single hooks that you may be able to bend if you use heavy braid and heavy leader, try the Mustad Demon Circle FINE. They are thinner than normal singles and I think you may be able to bend them (although bending a circle hook is more difficult than a treble because you have to bend it a lot more considering its shape)

Loved the video both fishing and filming! Channel is great just found it. Ryan was using an ambassadeur c300 series on one rod I think, any advice on how to spool them up, mine keeps slipping despite being put on by a tackle shop twice. Great fish Ryan magic. Keep the videos rolling boys!

Have you just added braid to the Reel?

    • @castnorthangling5964
      @castnorthangling5964  3 роки тому +1

With multiplers/baitcasters you need to add mono backing first, otherwise the braid will keep slipping 👌

circles should not be used for pike , i know its your first time but they are a catfish hook and big game fish hook

    • @bmwthreethreefive5798

I wouldn't personally agree with that at all.
Circle hooks work great on all kinds of fish. Big to small IMO. I've caught large sharks on them but also small pike

I don’t understand Stan when you miss the fish leave the bait in usually they come back with a hook just in the tail of the bait
