  • Bob Gjika talks about guitar amp tone and demonstrates Jimi Hendrix' "pedalboard" - How to use a wah pedal with germanium fuzz - Jimi Hendrix had a Vox wah pedal, a univibe, and a fuzzface...Obviously Jimi Hendrix didn't have an actual pedalboard for his guitar pedals/effects - since there were only three back then, but he used them all.

    Bob the lightbulb just went off, I get it now. I visited your site also and read what you have to say and I truly get it! Like you mentioned in this world of pro tools and tight miked cabs , what your doing is different. What you hear is what you get, at any volume. I took me a bit to break away from the amp topology we are used to like you pointed out. So I threw it away and listened to you and it was like hearing for the first time. I listened. That's all you have to do with your amps is listen. If you like it, your going to want one. I see now that no other amp does what you have designed. Thank you Sir, you indeed are a very skilled and talented person. Warm and Humble I might add. These amps are going to catch on like wildfire soon with that tone. Let a guy try to get that tone with their Fractal Axe Fx or Kemper Profiler. Not going to happen. This is tone you can feel, in your fingers and in your chest. Most people probably don't even notice that your amp is moving your vertical blinds with tone, but I did. Cheers and Thanks for the Lessons and Awesomeness!

    Thank you for the advice. I was getting so much hiss and noise from my pedals. Popped the DeJa Vibe in the middle on vibrato setting and noise disappeared. Legend! Your rig sounds absolutely! Love the tone.

    Thank you very much for the info. I've built fuzz in a wah pedal with ability to switch the order and a pot to solve input imp problem when the wah is first. I've built a univibe with true by pass and a switch to to turn it off like the original if needed, so I might build the another fuzz in the univibe to try this. I've watched many pedal experts and none of them knew or mentioned this.

    I say whatever works, and whatever gets one the sound they want.
    I’ve read countless times, and seen a few pictures that look correct, which have the signal as Wah>Fuzz Face>Octavia>Uni-Vibe.
    Mayer was alway modding Jimi’s pedals, so he may have found a way to fix the issue.
    It can still be heard every now and again from performances, where that squealy sound comes out.
    I’ve run a Wah into a BC108, and sometimes it works, often I got the problems. A boss pedal, with whatever the buffer is in them fixes this depending on the Fuzz Face, and having isolated power.

    Very cool trick, with some killer sounds. There are some pedals being made with a “Wah Trick” knob, which will take it in front off a Fuzz Face. Sabbadius does a couple.
    The Fulltone Clyde Deluxe is a great Wah, that works before a Fuzz Face, and has three alternates voicings to get the Shaft Wah, or a thinner sweep.
    Certain buffers work in taming a standard Vox or Cry Baby into Fuzz Face. I’m not knowledgeable to know what type of buffer, other than a change of impedance has something to do with it.

    This is exactly how I run my setup becuase I like the Wah before the fuzzface sound better. Plus Univibe mixed with wah sounds awesome. Another thing is to put a overdrive before the fuzz face. I think Stevie did that, but I'm not 100%.

    Back in the 1980’s, Roger Mayer had a NYC P.O. Box. I think he was selling his ‘rocket pedals’ through that address. (I think it was ‘Galaxy Audio’….but so long ago…not 100% sure…)
    I wrote to him and asked him about the annoying squeal that occurred when you had both the Wah & Fuzz Face on at same time.
    I also explained that my FX chain was Guitar-Wah-Fuzz Face-UniVibe-amp......just like Jimi's.Sometime later I received a small envelope from him which contained a 1-page brochure of his FX.
    No response to my question……..until I noticed on the back of the envelope: ‘Try connecting the fuzz before the wah.’
    Me: ‘WTF???? Is this guy serious??? Common knowledge that Jimi used the Wah before the Fuzz.
    (Still have the envelope.)
    Dave Weyer mentions in his video how he added a resistor (1K ohm?) in series to the output to eliminate the Wah/Fuzz squeal mentioned in this video.

    Dude awesome tone. Were did you get the gain master and can you please go over the inside of the wah and fuzz face. Make a video on them with parts numbers, that would be very cool.

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. I designed the Gainmaster specifically to work with my amplifiers that you see in the video, therefore it is only sold alongside the 10^n amplifier, built and designed by me.

      Unfortunately this would not help you to come up with a good sounding fuzz pedal, for one reason, is that the transistors are almost impossible to find... and when you do find them, you would need at least fifty of them to find two that are this good. Same thing with the wah, the reason for this is there is a part in a wah pedal, called an inductor, and these inductors all sound different, and you can't buy an inductor from that era, anyway. I have boxes full of inductors, from that time period, that do not make the cut. This is why the prices have gone through the roof on original old pedals like this - BUT BEWARE - just because it's one of these old pedals, doesn't mean it will sound good - for the reasons stated above - but for some reason, this modern marketplace does not seem to respect that fact. So don't lay out a bunch of cash, unless you have heard the pedal. I have owned this wah since I was 15 years old, I am 58 now, I have had this fuzz for at least 30 years, good luck in your search...

      I have an arsenal of vintage parts, I to build amplifiers as a hubby. Just wondering what you have underneath the hood. I don't understand what happen to society people post fishing videos and wont share the location, people post videos on two capacitors they change on their wah, but wont share the value. Some people, like that type of attention because they have no friends, plus no one will ever get rich from the videos mentioned above, so its silly to think somehow you or someone will lose something you do not have by sharing some basic info. Nothing personal towards you. I like the power amp and the preamp setup you have.

      Maybe we have a misunderstanding here - I clearly stated in the video that this is a 1966 fuzz face. You can go online and find probably 1000 schematics for this pedal. My point is they don't all sound the same, and the part numbers are all the same. I am not hiding anything here. I'm just sharing with the world a truly killer-sounding 1966 fuzz face and a killer-sounding wah pedal that I have owned since I was 15 years old. The wah pedal is originally a fuzz wah - I cut the fuzz section of the circuit board off and put a double-pole, double-throw switch in it, 30 years ago. The switch in the fuzz face is also a double-pole, double-throw switch that I put in around the same time. Not to waste your time, because you probably already know this, but all that does, is remove the pedals from the circuit completely, when I shut them off. So the best advice I can give you that would be way better than my foggy-looking camera, showing the inside of a stock fuzz face, would be to go to google, and search photos, and look at them as clear as day. The transistors in this one in the video are NKT275 - I have also had some killer sounding ones, and still do, with AC128 in them.

    It's a cool way to get the wah to work w/ the fuzz, but for the record, Hendrix didn't do that. His wah didn't work when he used it w/ his fuzz. Listen to any live recording. The wah basically becomes a treble booster w/ very little sweep, if any. When he incorporated the Univibe in his setup, in July '69, he ran wah, fuzz, Univibe. Later, when he went to a Si fuzz he ran Univibe, wah, fuzz. Tons of pics showing as such.

      well, Carl, I would have to be an idiot to refute you on this, because I believe you have studied the perceived history/lineage of exactly what all these guys did, right down to the dates involved, more than anyone I know on this planet - but I can clearly hear the difference between a germanium fuzz and a Si fuzz, and you and I both probably own every recording available from Jimi - and all I can say, is I hear it on some of the recordings, and Roger certainly knew this, and he was in the studio helping Jimi get these sounds. I would give an arm and a leg to pic Roger's brain for an hour or so, and trust me, I do respect your opinion here.

    • @carlygtr554
      @carlygtr554 6 років тому +3

      Not saying it couldn't have been done in the studio. That's possible. Bob, I picked Roger's brain in 1984! Way pre-internet. Met him at his local watering-hole in NYC. Asked everything I could think of but mostly learned that alot of the Fuzz Face enclosures indeed held Roger's electronics. He lived in a High-Rise. Got to see all the Jimi Hendrix, Isley Bros Gold Records on his walls. Played his odd-shaped Strat and left an original Univox Univibe there for him to "mod". The mod was removing the footcontroller and having it go extra slow speed. it took a YEAR to get back! Years later I had Dave at FoxRox fix the speed to have normal range. Anyway, yes, your trick is something that could have been used in the studio to get the full range of the wah while the fuzz was on.

      Yeah watch the woodstock performance its def not working like that , i never understood why jimi didnt put the wah last. Maybe because it was closer to the mic for him to sing?

      I'm lookin at his Rainbow Bridge pedal order after checking frame by frame of Jimi at Woodstock and its always the same: Wah/Fuzz/Vibe w/occasional changes of octavio position for BOG NY show. I do enjoy playing my wah after FF, and bypassing my wah buffer. As soon I get a Dave Weyer output mod like Jimi, I will try the old order again.

    • @MikelBluni
      @MikelBluni 2 роки тому

      @@Purplexi I have a Joe Gagan Woodstock Plus Wah with exactly that mod. Don’t expect it to sound like a Wah with a buffer. It fixing the issue a tiny bit, kills some of the squealing, but it doesn’t give you your full sweep back.

      hmmmmm... modulation last before amp input. EVH put his flanger last in the chain too it was patched even after the Echoplexes and the phase 90 which he basically used as a treble boost. So with Ed it was guitar - mxr 6 band, phase 90, Echoplexes (switching to route one or the other for different delays), Roland 10 band EQ, to mxr flanger to high-input channel 1 Marshall Plexi with Variac to cabs.

      korg 300€ "nu vibe" you mean? check the ebay prices of the original, transistor version from 60's... nu vibe is made of the programmed chip inside, like plug-in version of original, fulltone got simple transistor circuit, not a clone, but it got real lamp inside the circuit, really goes close enough... recomended to check it out! 4 different versions on the market, budget price... 8)
