Since you already finished the show - a "quick" thought here: I am spectulating that on top of her obviously having trauma from this incident, she seems to be presented as a person on the autism spectrum. She herself said, when she failed the court lady exam, that her ability to learn things that she is not interested in (so basically everthing apart from medicin) is below average - but when it comes to medicine related things and puzzles she excells. Her father Lakan being mentally compromised (and probably autistic as well since he is such an amazing tactician) as well makes this a very high possiblity (heritery). People on the autism spectrum understand emotions(learning by observing people and masking themselves very often as a result except for the one thing they are interested in) but they very often don't relate to them which is why Maomao says here that she left the emotion "love" in her mother's womb. It could be totally only related to her trauma though (depends on how deep on the spectrum she really is) .... but I think autism is displayed here especially since she often comes of too calm and dense towards Jinshi* and never shows very deep emotions except for medicine related topics. Through the nature of the show's setting I believe this will be never directly adressed (and confirmed) though because at this period of time they do not really know about treatment of mental illnesses and people are more likely to be hidden or put out of the spotlight of the family like they did with Lakan :/ *[she can objectively confirm that he is beautiful but it would never make her aroused so she jumps on him like other girls and since she objectively thinks and works towards being perceived as "ugly" or "not beautiful" in order to engange as less trouble as possible. She can not comprehend why he should be honestly liking her in that way since she learned in the brothels that beautiful women can seduce men and get husbands, not "ugly" ones (she does not even want to seduce anybody she just wants to make her medicine and help people along the way). Since he is of some kind of high status and she is a commoner she rules out in her head that there will be any marriage possibility society wise and from her POV she thinks not much of herself (trauma infliced!) so why should he actually be wanting to love her and she certainly does not want to settle as his concubine since she is not a sexually driven person (autism!). If any husband, she wants sb. she can trust and who support her and she can have a nice conversation about herbs. That is imo why she completely rules him out of her potential husband circle. Getting a husband is not some romantic fantasy to Maomao but a trade - husbands buy their women from where she grew up and in return the women does not have to worry about financial support when getting married. Additionally Jinshi represends the male version of a coutesan to her since he could technially seduce any woman to manipulate her which Maomao understands from day one and does not like that - she grew up between beautiful courtesans who seduce men on a daily basis to strip them of their money - so if Jinshi is nice to her she thinks he does this because he wants to manipulate/use her (which he actually wanted to do when they met in the beginning) - not out of love]

In my opinion, MaoMao was bothered by Jinshi going into the place which was courtesan house and restaurant but she chose to ignore and put off those feelings like how she puts away thoughts that will bother her emotionally or make her realize things that she does not want figured out.
Why would Maomao care tho? She doesn’t really care for the guy that much, and while it does bring up bad memories for her, would she really care about what he’s doing there? By that logic, would she be upset by everybody going to the courtesan house? I think her major issue was having to talk about information that was personal to her. But I don’t think she has any issue with him going to that place to begin with.
I really like the random cultural tidbit they inserted at 5:47 about families occasionally having vegetarian meals on certain dates. I dunno why it just brings back childhood memories for me.

Yeah she outright says her mother used to yell at her to leave the room. I don’t think she even got the chance to come to care about her mother since her mother didn’t care about her. And I can see that when she saw her mother setting up the go pieces, she called her a stupid woman. Maomao is understandably turned off by love, and there’s probably resentment festering from the fact her mother responds more positively to her father than her child. I think she takes care of her mother cus the ppl in her life who do care for her, also care for the mother. And maybe if her mother’s life wasn’t ruined in part by her father, she might’ve had a chance to be loved by her mother too. So it could just be taking care of someone out of obligation for her family’s wishes and what could have been.

By 14 you were essentially an adult, man or woman, whether you wanted to be or not. It's a modern privilege that we can take our time with things and not be forced into uncomfortable situations. Well, her father broke her mother, he's a piece of shit, he just thinks Maomao is his possession cuz she's his daughter, he only wants what he thinks is his. From what we know there's nothing good about him other than being extremely smart.

Istg maomao is the most non-emotional & nonchalant character to ever exist. Usually, i like characters like that, but there are times in the latter volumes that I wish she wasn't.
She basically cut off her own emotions for her own well being. It’s a trauma response, so obviously there’s going to be problems going forward cuz that’s how trauma works. A lot of ppl seem to think (not you, necessarily you but it’s just something I noticed) that trauma makes ppl stronger. Surviving bad things makes you strong but nobody gets out unscathed. Coping mechanisms will always hurt in the long run and cause problems in other areas of their life.
It's absolutely amazing how this work deals with characters. Honestly, what do you think about Lakan (the father) so far? There probably aren't many people who could like him (especially considering what's coming in the next episodes), yet even for him, the character development is absolutely precise (the latest two episodes of the serie will blow your mind and make you cry 😜 😭). In terms of character building, this is simply a masterpiece. 👌
