Very few people know that it's actually cheaper to buy a 1st generation G617 than a Hasselblad Xpan. But forget about the gx617 that's like minimum 6 grand to buy. Also another fun fact. The Fuji GFX 100s sensor size is smaller than then the image plane of 645 medium format (film). Why people say that the GFX is medium format.... and when people say it is a replacement for medium format film, I don't know since the sensor size really isn't nearly large enough.
@@ribsy People should think of what is being called digital medium format as full frame plus. In my book it is a con to call a digital sensor medium format when it's size is not even equivalent to the smallest medium format film plane size: 6x4.5
Man, I miss NY. I’ve been using my 6x17 Dayi back for my 4x5 since 2014 and it’s been a great part of my kit. The benefit is that you can compose the scene precisely on the ground glass. Cool vid Ribs. 😎
the faster you get with the changing bag, the less sweaty your hands will get. whenever it takes me too long i just set everything down and walk away from it, give myself time to dry off and get back to it. it definitely takes getting used to, but for me it was worth it, just for affording the kind of light control that allows me to work at any time of day.
@@ribsy haha fair enough. ideally we'd all just have real darkrooms and never have to bother with any of these janky workarounds. hopefully that day comes soon for you!
love to try this camera some day. - crazy you get 3 shots in just one film. massive "waste" when loading the film. interesting that loading 120mm didnt change all that much - especially for wider cameras interesting "vinete" trying to shoot in between the glass and also really interesting editing from your friend with the GFX too. it looks like he was using an manual 3rd party lens?
One thing... you could have taken the "crash bar" off the lens to get it between the glass pieces. I expect it would have allowed you to eliminate the blurring on the shots, even if the front element and barrel didn't squeeze through the glass gap. You need an Allen key to do that (which I'm sure wasn't included with the gear I'm sure). If you were to buy one of these cameras, you would be able to get the gear together to do this whenever there is call to remove the bars.
errr, does he know that you can just crop the top and bottom in post?....but seriously that's crazy cool. Would like to see you try and print that huge negative.
somehow just now seeing this video very nice camera and stunning photos, have a shin hao 6x17 holder for my 4x5's, although cumbersome my favorite way to compose. hope to see more pano's from you
That's going to be an eye watering level of detail for a panorama shot. Here I thought my 35mm panorama adapter for the pentax67 would be hot shit but this is like an insane jump up haha. What's the process you are going to use to scan these
I have the Fuji G617 with the fixed 105mm f8 lens, a fantastic camera and once you get the hang of using it you will get amazing results. The centre graduated ND2 filter is a must.
@@ribsy There was vignetting when not used on the 105 lens, but depending on the light and film used, I just leave it on all the time now. Glad though you had fun, if you ever find yourself in Ireland you'd be more than welcome to put a few rolls through mine.
Great video. I had the same issue developing in my bathroom with light leak. I went and bought a thick black clothe and glued velcro straps on it and the doorframe. It worked great. Keep posting these awesome videos.
Interestingly....there have been great Chinese 6x17 cameras for some years, such as the "DAYI"...but even the price of those has gone up, along with other film cameras.
I read a tip about putting a bed sheet on a bathroom door so when you close the door the extra material basically seals out the light. It's worked out great for me and my changing bag is largely unused now.
Have this camera it’s a great machine indeed 90mm is wide then a 180mm is kinda normal view, try the 300mm for cityscapes there is also a 105mm which I don’t have. Enjoy it
That camera is insane! And while I wouldn't want to own one, I want to try one! Also, NYC certainly is the best spot to try that camera and Top of the Rock has far better views than the Empire State (at least that's my view). This brought me back to my honeymoon in the city, and my wife, and I went to both Empire and Top of the Rock. Excellent work as always!
I live in NYC and still haven’t been to Top of the Rock. I definitely need to check it out. Great photos. I may have to stop by Fotocare to rent that camera.
Fujifilm made a 300mm lens for the camera back in the day, but it's pretty uncommon and unlikely that you would find it available at a rental shop. Basically 2x the focal length that you shot, so you would get about 1/2 the angle of view of the images you made (uncropped). One big limitation of the GX617 (compared to the last Linhof camer, which I think may be still manufactured, but at insane pricing) is that you cannot change the lenses with film in the camera. You have to empty to camera first before changing lenses because there is no darkslide or internal shutter in the body. I suppose you could swap lenses in a film changing bag, but the risk of getting dust or lint inside while changing would be a concern. However, since there is only four shots per roll, you just need to think of it as one roll of film per composition...
The trick with changing bags is not to buy the small ones but the big ones; plenty of space to work in there. There's a small learning curve but you can pick it up quickly. Other alternative is a changing tent.
In theory a 6x17 negative should be 2 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches, which is massive! My biggest is still my 6x6 folder (which I still need to get around to having it's shutter fixed...)
A shame about the crowding and the glass, but some great shots nonetheless. I don’t want to sound like a film fanboy (now mostly digital due to the costs) but I MUCH preferred the 6*9 and 6*17 crops to the GFX. Yes, the digital had more resolution when zoomed to silly levels but the colours from those shots was nowhere near as nice. Ironic that an 80 year old folding bellows camera can take as pleasing images as a £10,000 plus digital set up! Though next time you go, maybe hire a Leica M11 with those v. small lenses so you can shoot through the gaps?!
A couple of years back we made a 45 shot panoramic using this in vertical mode as someone (me) had knocked over our 5x4 2 days earlier - Disclaimer: it wasn't my fault; it never is - the results were sublime but the process in post was excruciating.
If you really look out for it, I believe it would be possible to get the slightly older original G617 panorama camera for $1500.00 or less. If you were to find the G617 being sold locally on a classified ad there is a really good chance that it would be a hard item to sell since it is so niche and thus you probably could get a better deal than Ebay.
Nice. Writing this before watching the video... but it seems you're channeling your "inner Nick Carver", although he uses a Shen Hao 6x17. Thomas Heaton uses the same Fuji 617 now and again however
Yep...big ass camera, big ass price!!! It'd be nice to own one, but renting would be the way to go to try one out. Might get a 617 back for my 4x5. Still not cheap but a lot cheaper than buying the Fuji. Though, those negs...worth the money when you see one!!!
That was cool and despite the protection glass challenge I much prefer your shots than the GFX. It would be cool if you could get a hang of a Noblex 6x17 to compare the experience.
I use a GFX100 and also a Hass H6D100c - after 100's of year banging film through a RZ - I would say the Hass is near to 5x4 and the GFX100 is knocking on the door of the RZ/RB for IQ - its in the printing - 10x8 will go the size of a house - H6 - about twenty feet - even when we pixel map
