  • A nighttime Kutty Theyyam ritual at Neeliyar Bhagavathi temple near Kannur, Kerala, South India. One of my favorite off the beaten track experiences in India!
Theyyam is a ritual form of worship common to northern Kerala and southern Karnataka states in India. It's believed that once a dancer is in full costume, they begin to channel a god, who takes over their body for the dance.

The next time you visit India, do visit coastal Karnataka. There is this folk artform called Yakshagana. I think you'll really like it!

Yakshagana is not the same. as Theyyam.
In Dakshina Kannada (Mangalore), the same 'god/goddess invocation' as Theyyam is practiced.
It is called Boota Kola or Buta Kola.
