- The Star Hotel riot, occasioned by the closing of a popular pub, was one of the largest riots in Australian history. An estimated 4,000 people fought with police on the streets of Newcastle, New South Wales on the night of 19 September 1979.
Australia. How could you live anywhere else? I was 12 in 1979 and I remember the riot on the news. Food for thought for a young Melbourne lad. Great song...thanks for the video.
"This song is by Don Walker, it's about the Star Hotel riot in Newcastle in 1979, which was one of the largest riots in Australian history. There was apparently 4,000 people in it that fought with police, there was missiles thrown and so many people injured and arrested, it was crazy.
Apparently the pub down the road, which was this really psoh hotel, had these openly gay guys who frequented it. The pub thought they were too posh to have gay guys so they called the police who came and removed these men and told them they had to go to another pub.
They dropped them at the Star Hotel, which was the grimiest pub in town, they told them that was the only place they would be allowed to drink. These men went in and checked it out and there were a couple of old people playing pokie machines, it was a sad sight. But they decided to make the best of a bad situation so they went home and got all dressed up in their glittery drag gear. They went back that night and proceeded to take over the place and dance in the windows.
Across the road was this dancehall and all these people came out in the street and were like 'what's happenng over the road?'. They all ended up flocking into the pub and the Star Hotel became the coolest place to go. But not long after that the owners of the Star Hotel decided to shut it down and everyone was outrages and that led to this riot happening.
Don Walker had written quite a lot of songs around this time about similar kind of themes. Like the disenfranchised youth of that time. "

I think the Sydney Riot (Battle of Central Station 1916) was bigger--15,000 rioters. It was about the appalling training and conditions of recruits at Casula Training camp at Liverpool NSW in WWI. Was seen as a strike by the soldiers, but wrongly as a 'mutiny' by the office johnnies in charge.
The Battle of Brisbane in 1942 between bastard yank soldiers and Aust soldiers went for two days, about 5,000 rioters, but also deaths, and other incidents over many months.
The same causes as Brisbane also happened at the Battle of Bondi, and the Battle of Fremantle in April 1944. A lot of censorship at the time (and now) still prevents correct details, especially as it involved the 'Brisbane Line retreat' but Freo was HUGE, though official sources usually between 500 and 1,000.
+tippngthevelvet Don Walker is a genius of a songwriter.
yep, the Brisbane Line.
the govt cowRds were planning to surrender all of Australia above Brisbane to the Nipps.
tippngthevelvet farrkin good story mate, makes yu wonder why the publican would want to chop down the money tree, if it was that popular. My mate lived in newcastle at the time and reconed it was because it was a live band pub, which was a popular haunt of some bikies, the cops wanted to close it down because it was a bloody riot every fri, sat night. regardless it set the scene for this blistering number , and we are all the better for it.
Missy Higgins is a fkn gronk.
Missy Higgns featured this song today on her programme on great Australian lyricists, and this story really captivated me.
I remember after the great Enlightenment of the Gough Whitlam period, Fraser went in hard and hateful against young people; hard on benefits, hard on "crime", slashed education. He didn't want to hear them, and didn't want to see them, because they were to bame for eveything bad in his evil eyes (sound familiar in 2014?). Seems like by 1979, young people had had enough. Bravo to those brave 4000 who fought against the brutal and corrupt NSW police force, the young peoples' Eureka moment in Australian history.
I recall the activity at Mount Panorama, Bathurst for the motorcycle Grand Prix in 1980 and 1985. Courtesy of the riot equipped constabulary in the compound.
My daddy was in this, theres a photo of him flipping a car ^__^. On the 11th of Dec 2011, daddy died, and that same night, Cold Chisel were having a concert, this song was being played, nan and grandy (his mum and dad) and my aunty and uncle were there, looking out for him on the screen when they got the phone call. ~spooky~ R.I.P Daddy oxox. :c
Sky hooks
You just could I'm good in bed
I was the there. Chisel didnt play. It was a local band named Heroes and the riot started when the police unplugged the singers microphone right on 10pm {closing time} and half way through their last song instead of letting them finish
Ohh lord you know and the heroes kept on as the cops tried to keep pulling the plug
Jimmy could really sing back in the day..
riots in London bought me here...just thinking only thing make an Aussie riot is the pub being closed down :P
It was a jack booted Highway Patrol cop literally pulling the plug that got them going . He was the first copper punched
was at the two Easter Bathust motorcycle races riots of 81 & 85 but not at the Star hotel.
I was there I was only 14 and my parents do not know nor do most of my family////Few ppl know about the 3 bars....Front bar for the steel workers, middle bar for the suit wearers and the back bar for gays and music lovers....
Far out that was bloody awesome.
so true, chisel never played there, it was a local band, heroes i think, correct me if wrong, hey i wasn't even born yet but i love lgend, esp in my own backyard
Close down a pub here in Australia and we will riot. Novacastrians take our pub closures very seriously, lol
