Lyrics:
All last night we were learning
Drank our cheques by the bar
Somewhere bridges were burning
As the walls came down at the Star
Squadcars fanned the insanity
Newsteams fought through the crowd
Spent last night under custody
And the sun found me on the road
At the Star Hotel
At the Star Hotel
They better listen cause we're ringin' a bell
Ain't no deals, we got nothing to sell
Just a taste of things to come at the Star Hotel
(Here lies a local culture
Most nights were good, some were bad
Between school and a shifting future
It was most of all we had)
Those in charge are getting crazier
Job queues grow through the land
An uncontrolled Youth in Asia
Gonna make those fools understand
One of the most underrated chisel songs
Totally agree!! My fave
Jimmy in his prime is something really unforgettable
Perfect storm
Jimmy ,Mossy ,Walker fuck me all of em , could sing
Could play
Could write
Had a beer at lunch time, from the Chullora railway, or the PTC. It was a stunning time! Jim Barnes and Chisel were on hand. About the events that took place…
Ozzie's don't take kindly to having their favourite hotels close down!
Was about more than a pub closure.
Was a huge night for Newie My dad and his mates attended the last stand, I remember mum freakin out at news bulletin lol.
Henry Lawson espoused the same opine
It was a big deal in little old Newcastle at the time. People just never took on the police at the time.
My mum was at the Star Hotel that night. She’s 72 this Sunday
tulipchic34 Happy Birthday to your Mum for that Sunday. They had it right back then, freedom in this country is a thing of the past for so many. They are slaughtering so many, chemo, forced so called mental health drugs, statins, and much more. Tell her I said thanks for trying.
We are now like sheep among wolves, just like jesus said we would be.
Well that speaks volumes of your mum what a bloody champion
Tulipchic34. unfortunately I was born 8 yrs to late to witness history in the making, but my mum was at the Nurse's courters at western suburbs maternity that night, and I remember her telling me that she just heard siren after siren going into town....
Chisels never played the star hotel
this song never gets old.
My favourite Cold Chisel song of all time. Love the live footage of them performing absolutely electric and also being interspersed with footage of the infamous Star Hotel Riot. How someone wasn't killed in that riot was nothing short of a miracle.
In the words of the man himself 'Fuckin Classic'
Ah Bow River. The right version.

How many years on and still possibly the best.. not just the music but the video captures the energy of the day ..Well Done!
Love this. Long live the real Aus.
Back in the days when Aussies had the odd riot here and there. "ll never forget the riot i was in at Glenelg in South Australia, the cop shop was surrounded and it was a wild afternoon and night
A monumental rock song from a brilliant band. Nuff said!
The fuzz got a flogging that night…when the patrons let loose
One of my fav song's from chisels. Go Barnesy, mossy, today's kids have no idea what real rock music is.
No they don't, cause they are to busy looking at mobile phones! Don't worry change is comin
I'm today's kid and I'm watching this
Kinoath
best chisel song..still give me goosebumps
One of my favourite chisel songs intense and angry!!!
Steve Prestwich (RIP), Chris Small, Ian Moss, Don Walker, Jimmy Barnes. East. The best damn Australian album EVER!
that would be PHIL SMALL, not Chris
mrrobg61 and I think this live is from swing shift...
You are not wrong.
@@gdaym8635 He's still right that East was the best :D
Reminds me of the year 1985 where the N.S.W. constabulary became over excited at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Mount Panorama at Bathurst.
Twas a memorable night where the boys were restless and the riot alarm was sounded three times.
The tv crew car found itself placed in a strategic position and found itself over turned for some heat treatment.
R.I.P. Steve Prestwich.
I must be one of the 12 Million Chisel Lovers who were not there at the 'Riot at The Star Hotel in Newcastle, NSW'. But JEEZZZ I was there in Spirit!
I was there not just the star but when Chisel did this at the Palaise in Newcastle and it all went off again.
I saw chisel at Maceys in Sth Yarra.
they were doing a practice type show.
they were billed as the barking spiders.
and in Adelaide at the Apollo
@@roostersbays95 And at the Fairfield Hotel in Sydney in 1979
What an energised performance from the band. Incredible.
Lols...not only was I there that night, but I've only JUST realised I'm in the third clip of the song. Yaah Novocastrians. Live Long!
What's the story with that night? What happened?
psydwaindah a riot broke out at the star hotel because of the lockout law
I had lunch there today the owner has all the photos of the infamous night and is thinking of framing more of them for display,, it's a bit quieter these day's lol.
@@UltraZilla20 Is that an attempt at humour?

this is a documentary, with an insanely fast reggae style beat, and Jimmy going "okay, have I exploded everybody's eardrums yet? No? Okay. let's go harder next chorus"
Last stand doco?
My friend Andy was there, at the Star Hotel that night. Good one Andy, stay strong.
My dad’s Australian and I have step brothers, sisters and aunties over there but I’m from Scotland and I’ve never been but I really wish that I could go, everyone here think the Australians rule!!!!🇦🇺🇦🇺
👍😎👍💛
Send over a few more Barnseys and Youngs you're not sure what to do with. We're starting to run short.
It's in Newcastle, NSW. It's about the riot there in 1979 when they shut it down. It was run down and despite being a popular venue, it was a pretty rough place. It was started at closing time when band had kept playing and the police unplugged the gear and told everyone to leave. The riot started and is one of the biggest in Australia with about 4,000 rioters.
And Cold Chisel never played there
Well hey what'd the cops think would happen? Ya want a strategic game plan, let the band play one last song. Or try to shut it off quietly i.e: tell band crew last one or.....
The most stupid thing the cops did was act with "little man syndrome" and unplugged. That my friends is what's called disrupting the ants nest... I really think the cops asked for it. Cos I don't think it takes a genius to work out that if ya got a pub full of young people on the piss with hormones for days, it's almost like dealing with a skitish race horse ya know? It's called strategy. And if the cops used their brains that night the riot could possibly have been avoided..
Great Band! I like this a lot.
Don't mess with novacastrions ever
10/10 what a track!!!!!
me & some young bushies went into the star hotel about that time ,there were poofters in one bar & bikies in another , turned into a big shit fight that finished when a shot gun came out & we suddenly realized we had to be some where else , 1972 ?
GRRRREAT SCOTS! What a very very cool voice Jimmy Barnes has! Awesome!
The ebbs and flows of this song is truly dramatic.
Classic
Classic chisels
Mate a bloody discrace these coppers had for Aussies just having a bloody good time . ✌️
Top Night !

Best version I’ve heard
The maracas in the intro are great!
One word somes this Classic Chisel Video up AWESOME i love it.
Mossy can play
Did anyone out there see Chisel at an under-age gig at Cabramatta civic centre in Sydney circa 1980? I think it was part of a warm up tour they did before they promoted the "east" album. I was about 14 at the time. Best live band I ever saw, and I've seen plenty over the years.
Bring on the riots Aussies!!! Wake up! We are getting walked over and milked.
Just a classic Chisel song about some Newcastle youths letting off a bit of steam.
Just love the melody line on the keyboard. It really sets the tension of the song
I remember this an era when Aussies still had fight in them.

Tardis Flanagan LoL Cold Chisel wasn't a reggae band .....
Just Sayin haha what a fuckwiit!
reggae? The fuck are you on about
They're rock not reggae lol
If all the folk that reckon they were there, actually were there, it'd be the biggest crowd EVER for a gig in Australia. Hahaha 😃
Jim Barnes is his best
Wow.
1979 19 years old i was there on the knight
Reminds me of my college days. Happy Times.
What a unbelievable night.. To young to be there but i was

The last time we Australians really rioted.
Newy's biggest ACAB moment
When Coppers were real and Aussie had some fight in them. Not like now, Coppers are weak as piss and Aussies roll over and take it
what year is this?
Star fu#$in hotel central station
Peterne1: you were asking where was this, did u mean where chisel playing at the time of recording or where the live riot footage was filmed? Where chisel were playing I don't know, but the live riot footage was in king st Newcastle at the star hotel which attracted a lot of the gay, trans, drags. A book which came out not long ago called out in the valley explains the hotel and it's closer quite well.
Chisel was not playing that night, one of Newcastle's finest local bands "The Heroes" featuring the legendary Mark Tinson and Pete DeJong were playing. They also have a song about the night called "The Star & The Slaughter" . This song was written before the night and was about the loss of another great venue, the police used it to try and argue the band tried to incite the riot.
other than STAR HOTEL,,anyone know the rest of the LYRICS !!!!

Were you at the star hotel around eighty five / six / seven?
Because your singing about it.
I was there then, I actually got kicked out for being underaged
Where was that? I'm betting a $10000000 you also had a Railway Hotel. What Qld town doesn't?

Has anyone had a red hot go at the CC/Closed Captioning/Subtitles on this song? I predict 2040 AI will reveal the lyrics, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.
"whose idea was it too model that behaviour to the oppressed. I forgot newcastle was bhp's the source of Australia's wealth, they had to secure the area. Oh, and having marjuarna would get you 20 years in prison (if you want to know why people are complicit)"
"I guess it's cost effective"
It's sad that now Aussies will stand around and applaude the destruction of the local pub in hope a coffee shop will appear to compete with the other 6 coffee shops directly opposite.
PeterHBne1 not where I'm from mate. Pubs the lifeline of our 800 strong sw qld town
Bosses shuts the Star, and pretty much shut the rest when they turned them into pokie houses. Now they have too much money for any one to stand up to them, better of closing them.
