I would have thought that for a totally fair review, you should have used 3 brand new saws, the blade on the Bacho could have just been blunted through much more use.

I had the exact same experience with my saws. The bahco sits on the shelf, and I take a FIXED BLADE silky with me every time! Fixed blade saw with a curved blade is the fastest and easiest saw I have ever found.
I upgraded to the opinel n18 last year and I'm glad I did. It was either that or a budget saw that cost less than half the price because I was buying from a local shop that had limited options. Regardless, the opinel has served me well since I've had it. No issues so far.

I've got the Silky Pocketboy for the odd bit of pruning around the home, and it's a breeze to go through branches with. Not too surprised that the Gomboy did so well, but I was pleased to see the Opinel perform an admirable second. I love their folders.
Nice one James. currently the bahco is still as blunt as ever. The opinel actually broke a little bit.. There's a rollpin holding the blade in the open position and with all the use and abuse it got, the rollpin bend and broke.. easy enough fix but it will show that it really is a 'pruning saw' as advertised and not a big (10cm+) diameter dry firewood processor .. Great video. I have not heard of the big opinel, I have a small folding knife they make and love it. I have both the bahco and the silky. I like both of them, both have advantages and disadvantages. When I want to cut something in my yard I grab the silky most of the time. It cuts a little faster and a little easier. When I go backpacking I always take my bahco. It is lighter and way more durable if I'm miles in the woods I want the saw that will hold vs saving a few strokes per cut. But I like them both, great saws.
The Bahco already has two years of use? I've never found myself rushing in the bush to cut wood. The Bahco is the lightest, has a locking blade, a small leather strap, and a coated blade to prevent rust. It's also the least expensive, and safe in a pack. I backpack a lot on the Pacific crest Trail. I'm going with the Bahco. Great reviews guys. Edit: name brand.

Smooth Gefixt the blade for the bahco is designed for cutting different things, bone, plastic, wood, etc. You’re comparing apples to oranges. Bahco sells blades that will cut every bit as good as a silky.
I'm watching your videos over again from oldest to newest (it will be my 3rd time for many!). I have the Bahco. I am pretty sure I bought it after seeing this video I don't recall, but maybe you did another test or said something later on about the Bahco faring poorly only because it is worn out. In any case, I have been quite happy with mine, and even got one for my father for Christmas last year, with the Mora Companion lookalike of course! :)

Thanks for the video. I guess that, in the end, all three accomplished the job properly. When you are in the woods, sawing a piece of wood is more a steady-constant action than a against-the-clock thing. The Opinel saw is pretty, but, for me, it would be my third option. I would probably go for the lowest price first (Bahco) or, having the money, for the Gomboy...or WTF, having the money, I'd buy the three of them! .

Bahco pruning saw for a fixed blade. Still sharp after 2 years of cutting. Best folding saw I've used us the Kershaw Taskmaster. I'll have to compare these to a Silky.
I've got Bbacho, I brought the silky, way better at cutting by far. Then I was given an Opinel saw (the smaller No 12) I love it. Nice wood handle, salvage cutter within its blade length, much more "bushcrafty" So I'm same as you guys, Silky is a cutting machine! Opinel is gorgeous and good cutter. The Bacho is a tough bargain. Take your choice:-)
That's untrue, the only thing a silly saw is better at doing is draining the wallet, I've had to replace 3 broken blades and out of pocket for one blade would be as much as buying one and a half Laplander saws but in my case my friendly vendor just gave me extra blades for free.. The only thing by far is that the Bahco is by far more durable. The saws all cut about the same and if you're really worried about cutting speed then use a proper wood saw, a buck-saw not a pruning saw Lol
I ordered a Opinel after watching this. I love Opinel and thought it was really cool that they released a folding saw like this. I used it for about an hour to break down some brush for a bon fire. The tip of my saw also broke off. I don’t believe I could have done anything different or better in terms of how I was using it. Kind of a bummer.
I have bad shoulders. the silky saws are my pick. not only do I use them for camping I use them for trimming the trees in my yard. that makes the prices of the silky saw line worth it. I have the bigboy 2000 xl & the katana boy 500. i use the least amount of energy using the silky. at the end of a hard day I want the least amount of wear and tear on my body. the silky saws I own do the work:) great video...subbed.
I've had my Opinel No 18 saw for a few years, and the blade teeth cut well and quickly for my needs in keeping the Kudzu vines at bay! BUT the factory blade locking "hollow" steel cross pin needs an upgrade at the factory! The lockup was always a bit light and allowed the blade to move a little "up & down" because the hollow stop pin would flex. A few days ago the hollow pin finally snapped, making the saw unusable. (the blade would face the sky when any pressure was applied :-( I decided to upgrade mine to how the factory should be making them. This isn't a cheap saw to begin with, ...so make it STRONGER to begin with! After punching out the (now) 2 pieces of the original "hollow" stop pin, I fitted a SOLID piece of Stainless Steel rod. Carbon steel scrap, or even a piece of drill bit shaft material in proper diameter could also be used, ...but I had some scrap SS rod that just needed a little taken off the diameter. Aim for a snug fit but not so tight you could crack the wood. After mine was tapped in with a brass mallet, I ground down the ends to match the contour of the handle. NOW the lockup is rock solid, and the blade doesn't flex up or down in use. Opinel,.... if you're listening do it this way going forward, ......Please :-)
That's exactlly what happened to Dylans opinel (it broke even on video: ultimate cutting tool battle), defenitly structural issue with the saw. Dylan did exactly the same with a drill bit;) Cool, to hear your similar experience and yeah let the word be spread to opinel. Atb!

The saw breaking happens shortly after this point in the video: ua-cam.com/video/qtLV2Vyg2Ic/v-deo.html I wanted some footage showing how hard the saw was being used "before" the break. (two handed cutting in this case) On a freezing cold night trying to cut wood quickly to warm someone who broke through the ice, heavier blade pressure might be used. You definitely don't want your saw to do this! If my life depended on the Opinel No 18 saw this weakness would be a deal breaker,...initially anyway. But knowing what I do now, if I ever lose it I would buy another one since they cut so well and quickly. However, I would IMMEDIATELY replace the hollow stop pin with a solid steel one! I'd advise ANY owners of these otherwise fine saws to do the same. :-)

Not quite. Here's the correction Opinel looks most traditional and with it stylish, Silky is most expensive and weakest, Bahco is easily the most durable, effective and obviously best priced.. Cutting ability they are about the same all around.
@@7wildernessSpecialist I wouldn't exactly say the Silky is weakest, especially when it was actually the Opinel that had the blade tip break off. If you use it properly you're not putting much effort into the sawing so treating it correctly it doesn't matter so much that it's technically less durable than the Bahco. If you were budget minded, the Bahco is a fine choice, but the Silky is far more effective imho, faster with less effort, so if you can afford the difference and intend to saw a lot while you're out bushcrafting it's a wise choice, maybe not enough to upgrade from a Bahco you're happy with but if you didn't have either I'd recommend the Silky. Not going to saw much and want to save money and weight, then the Bahco is maybe the most sensible choice.
Cool comparison! I've used all 3 of these but I have a 4th competitor, the Silky F180. It's even lighter than the Laplander at 150 grams and because the handle is a bit flatter it is way more comfortable to carry in your pocket. It has become my go-to folding saw for when I'm out and about now. I have the one with the red handle which has the largest teeth of the two versions. Cheers!
I really like how you guys did the test. I would say it is a bit unfair to use a used saw. But I totally understand use what you have. I personally use a corona it will beat a silky and it's tougher and much better priced. The one that would be my second would be the openial. Mostly because replacing the blade is cheap. I've never had luck sharpening a saw blade. They seem to lose their temper when they dull. I can make them screaming sharp which lasts for like 1 log and it's dull ( might be exaggeration/ but not by much) lol Still a oldie but goodie
Nice test guys. I was looking for a cheap folding saw and I was very successful at Husqvarna 220mm (10 € - Czech Republic). It is far faster than the Laplander. Have you already tried it?
In europe, there are pruning saws for sale at DIY stores of the brand "gardena". When you look at the back of the pack, the 'contact/support' info lists husqvarna. Appearantly the gardena saws are just rebranded husqvarna. Might be interesting to know :)
The Husqvarna is an excellent saw also, so is my older Stihl folding saw. But the Laplander is just so good for durability and that is what is important for "bushcraft"

bow saw is nearly always bigger/heavier.. but with better performance i guess.. hack saws are not really efficient vs wood.. ;) so all in all i guess its its own category with weight/size vs cutting power and accuracy
That is great to hear man! with the beautiful design and excellent performance you can't go wrong. I have recently made a leather belt sheath for it so it is even more practical. remember that it is a pull-cut blade so take your time at the start, until you get used to the motion. Perhaps a Silky is a few seconds faster but will break very easily in pieces while a Laplander only will bend. so do the math if you alone in the woods depending on it
Hey great effective review. I went to purchase the Silky and found out that it comes with large or medium teeth. You didn't address this in the vid. What's the difference? Thanks
You probably worked this out by now but just in case....as a rule smaller teeth are for cutting across the grain ( most cuts you would make are. Cross cuts) and large teeth are for rip cuts along the grain (you're unlikely to be doing this as you'd probably use an axe to split)
I don't understand these speed tests. The true measure of the tool is how many calories you burned for the task. A count of blade strokes necessary to complete the task would be more relevant. So far I've gone Silky because of how many calories of work it saves me physically. I'm not usually as worried about speed.
The 'good looking' opinel, with it's blade design very well performing indeed. With the blade being thin you can't however win on all points... 'durability'. Fair enough. Thanks for you comments, my friend. Julius
@@SmoothGefixt I was surprised by the thinness of the blade when I first got it. If you're stupid with it when sawing, you might end up snapping the blade because of how easily it bends. At least in comparison with the laplander.
Seems like the difference between the Opinel and the Silky comes down to whichever you can get in your area. I went Silky, but from this it seems that the Opinel would be just as valid. Only potential downside that I can see, Opinel has a wooden handle that's maybe more likely to have water problems in the long term? No worse than an axe handle though, I guess. Oil it and it'll stay good forever.
Well I haven't broken an Opinel pruning blade or Laplander blade however for the silly saw I have broke 3 blades within 5 months of usage. All under the same heavy use.
The problem with both silky and opinel is the brittle steel. It breaks so fast. Laplander however does not, and thats why the saw is more durable and more fited in a survival setting.
Thank you for being honest about the age of the saws, however the age factor completely negates any results. Any fair side-by-side review should start on even ground otherwise it’s a waste of time.
You can’t go wrong with these name brands but some knockoffs are good and some are bad so be careful with those. Imo they all work well but I’ve had knockoffs that get dull or bent easily. I’d rather have a saw that can stand up to abuse and last longer. My main brands are samurai, and silky. The Laplander seems good but I only just started using it. People seem to love them though. It seems good so far, time will tell.
I think we all know that Silky makes the best folding saws, but there is nothing wrong with Bacho for the money (when sharp). That said, if you want to buy one saw and you're not worried about weight, the Gomboy is the one you want.
Great job The blade of the banco the blade will not snap I n coals Canada climat silky and opinel will brake but not the bahco also you can learn to use a saw that cut on pull and push thank you
Try the Silky F-180. Its about the cheapest Silky I could find. It does have a plastic construction and I find the large teeth make it slightly difficult to start a cut. But once its going it cuts really well and has held up so far.

Bushcraft Beats! The Original idea behind this video, was to compare the laplander with the opinel! which is also 2 years old! we had the chance to add a brand new silky to the comparison and we decided to do so. of course this is not fair, but it gives you extra info. I got you, sorry about that, I heard about the Opinel's age after I made this comment X( I guess the final redeeming qualities of the laplander are that the blade is more durable/less prone to snapping, it can be resharpened and it is cheaper. I think we'll pick up a Silky at some point, just to make sawing that much easier, but will always have the laplander if the Silky's blade snaps. Enjoying your channel, waiting for more!

you made a statement that the Bahlco had used or quite sometime and there fore the blade might have dulled a bit....That would make the test unfair.....all saws should have been new.
I'm a Silky fanboy. I first discovered Japanese pull saws in 1990 & although I own several traditional western type saws, the Japanese saws are always my first go to choice. They used to be very affordable but are almost prohibitively expensive now. Perhaps the price is compensated by the speed & ease of use though.

Opinel is definitely the most beautiful. Silky is a beast. Honestly I go out with a silky zubat because it just eats logs and I don’t mind the weight as aids multiple people.

The lap may take longer to cut but it's stronger and reliable as the silky blades snap when you need them most, take both with you!

I wanted some footage showing how hard the saw was being used "before" the break. (two handed cutting in this case) On a freezing cold night trying to cut wood quickly to warm someone who broke through the ice, heavier blade pressure might be used. You definitely don't want your saw to do this!
If my life depended on the Opinel No 18 saw this weakness would be a deal breaker,...initially anyway. But knowing what I do now, if I ever lose it I would buy another one since they cut so well and quickly. However, I would IMMEDIATELY replace the hollow stop pin with a solid steel one! I'd advise ANY owners of these otherwise fine saws to do the same. :-)

Not quite. Here's the correction Opinel looks most traditional and with it stylish, Silky is most expensive and weakest, Bahco is easily the most durable, effective and obviously best priced.. Cutting ability they are about the same all around.
@@7wildernessSpecialist I wouldn't exactly say the Silky is weakest, especially when it was actually the Opinel that had the blade tip break off. If you use it properly you're not putting much effort into the sawing so treating it correctly it doesn't matter so much that it's technically less durable than the Bahco.
If you were budget minded, the Bahco is a fine choice, but the Silky is far more effective imho, faster with less effort, so if you can afford the difference and intend to saw a lot while you're out bushcrafting it's a wise choice, maybe not enough to upgrade from a Bahco you're happy with but if you didn't have either I'd recommend the Silky.
Not going to saw much and want to save money and weight, then the Bahco is maybe the most sensible choice.

Cool comparison! I've used all 3 of these but I have a 4th competitor, the Silky F180. It's even lighter than the Laplander at 150 grams and because the handle is a bit flatter it is way more comfortable to carry in your pocket. It has become my go-to folding saw for when I'm out and about now. I have the one with the red handle which has the largest teeth of the two versions. Cheers!
I really like how you guys did the test. I would say it is a bit unfair to use a used saw. But I totally understand use what you have. I personally use a corona it will beat a silky and it's tougher and much better priced. The one that would be my second would be the openial. Mostly because replacing the blade is cheap. I've never had luck sharpening a saw blade. They seem to lose their temper when they dull. I can make them screaming sharp which lasts for like 1 log and it's dull ( might be exaggeration/ but not by much) lol

Nice test guys. I was looking for a cheap folding saw and I was very successful at Husqvarna 220mm (10 € - Czech Republic). It is far faster than the Laplander. Have you already tried it?

In europe, there are pruning saws for sale at DIY stores of the brand "gardena". When you look at the back of the pack, the 'contact/support' info lists husqvarna. Appearantly the gardena saws are just rebranded husqvarna. Might be interesting to know :)
The Husqvarna is an excellent saw also, so is my older Stihl folding saw. But the Laplander is just so good for durability and that is what is important for "bushcraft"
I'll use the Fiskars saw. It's great!!!
I have a bahco and I love it. I have been fairly rough with it and it's held up. I don't intend to replace it, but if I did it would be a silky.
Silly saw blades are quite steeply priced.

How do these folding saws compare to a hack saw or bow saw of similar weight?
bow saw is nearly always bigger/heavier.. but with better performance i guess.. hack saws are not really efficient vs wood.. ;) so all in all i guess its its own category with weight/size vs cutting power and accuracy

I have recently made a leather belt sheath for it so it is even more practical.
remember that it is a pull-cut blade so take your time at the start, until you get used to the motion.

Perhaps a Silky is a few seconds faster but will break very easily in pieces while a Laplander only will bend. so do the math if you alone in the woods depending on it

You probably worked this out by now but just in case....as a rule smaller teeth are for cutting across the grain ( most cuts you would make are. Cross cuts) and large teeth are for rip cuts along the grain (you're unlikely to be doing this as you'd probably use an axe to split)

I don't understand these speed tests. The true measure of the tool is how many calories you burned for the task. A count of blade strokes necessary to complete the task would be more relevant. So far I've gone Silky because of how many calories of work it saves me physically. I'm not usually as worried about speed.
Fair point, however in general 'the more speed, the more efficient' would apply;)

@@SmoothGefixt I was surprised by the thinness of the blade when I first got it. If you're stupid with it when sawing, you might end up snapping the blade because of how easily it bends. At least in comparison with the laplander.

Seems like the difference between the Opinel and the Silky comes down to whichever you can get in your area. I went Silky, but from this it seems that the Opinel would be just as valid. Only potential downside that I can see, Opinel has a wooden handle that's maybe more likely to have water problems in the long term? No worse than an axe handle though, I guess. Oil it and it'll stay good forever.
Well I haven't broken an Opinel pruning blade or Laplander blade however for the silly saw I have broke 3 blades within 5 months of usage. All under the same heavy use.
The problem with both silky and opinel is the brittle steel. It breaks so fast. Laplander however does not, and thats why the saw is more durable and more fited in a survival setting.
Thank you for being honest about the age of the saws, however the age factor completely negates any results. Any fair side-by-side review should start on even ground otherwise it’s a waste of time.

You can’t go wrong with these name brands but some knockoffs are good and some are bad so be careful with those. Imo they all work well but I’ve had knockoffs that get dull or bent easily. I’d rather have a saw that can stand up to abuse and last longer. My main brands are samurai, and silky. The Laplander seems good but I only just started using it. People seem to love them though. It seems good so far, time will tell.
Guess there is something wrong with that Bacho saw, I have mine for last three years and it still saws much much better than that one.

I think we all know that Silky makes the best folding saws, but there is nothing wrong with Bacho for the money (when sharp). That said, if you want to buy one saw and you're not worried about weight, the Gomboy is the one you want.

Try the Silky F-180. Its about the cheapest Silky I could find. It does have a plastic construction and I find the large teeth make it slightly difficult to start a cut. But once its going it cuts really well and has held up so far.

The Original idea behind this video, was to compare the laplander with the opinel! which is also 2 years old!
we had the chance to add a brand new silky to the comparison and we decided to do so. of course this is not fair, but it gives you extra info. The 2 year old opinel wasn't a lot slower than a brand new silky, for example!
We would like to get the silky back in 2 years and look at it again!

I got you, sorry about that, I heard about the Opinel's age after I made this comment X( I guess the final redeeming qualities of the laplander are that the blade is more durable/less prone to snapping, it can be resharpened and it is cheaper. I think we'll pick up a Silky at some point, just to make sawing that much easier, but will always have the laplander if the Silky's blade snaps. Enjoying your channel, waiting for more!

Yes the silly saw blade will snap under heavy use. If you want sawing to be much easier you'd use a proper wood saw instead of a pruning saw lol....
The large/coarse tooth Silkys are even a wee bit quicker.
you made a statement that the Bahlco had used or quite sometime and there fore the blade might have dulled a bit....That would make the test unfair.....all saws should have been new.
I'm a Silky fanboy. I first discovered Japanese pull saws in 1990 & although I own several traditional western type saws, the Japanese saws are always my first go to choice. They used to be very affordable but are almost prohibitively expensive now. Perhaps the price is compensated by the speed & ease of use though.

But you can make another handle for opinel
theoretically you could. You would however need some tools to make it (a drill and another saw). might be better off spending resources on something like a bucksaw, if you catch my drift;)

I take my Silky Catanaboy 500 when I go out! It cuts the work in half! But new blades are almost as much as replacement of the whole saw!

I have the opinel, and the locking clip has gone a bit rusty after 2 years in the shed. Disappointing. Obvious not as good quality as the blade
A brand new Silky against a 2yr old Opinel and a 2yr old Laplander really isn't a fair test and is pretty misleading.
Apparently the bahco gets better when the coating wears off the teeth.

They are not the same length. If we don't take footprint into account, then just use a bowsaw. It will blow all there out of the water.

Opinel is definitely the most beautiful. Silky is a beast. Honestly I go out with a silky zubat because it just eats logs and I don’t mind the weight as aids multiple people.
I've used a new silky and bahco and there wasn't a massive noticeable difference I'm the two.
