  • I took a risk and gave this thing a try - a 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric through Avis.
The car itself was actually a nice little package and offered plenty of great features. I found though that having this to drive around on a weekend trip can lead to issues....

Part of the reason we got a Kona EV overt the Tesla is for the very reasons you mentioned but we did end up with the top trim in leather and Highway assist which is really nice. Not quite a poor man’s autopilot but definitely helpful for long 50+ mile stretches.
If you’re just hauling around town and whatnot getting to 70-80% is perfectly fine and can generally be done in under 45 minutes, depending on the charger and your state of charge of course. Never would I charge to 100 unless on a road trip and range to the next charger is absolutely needed. It’s cool that you were able to rent that over the Bolt!

Yea I was pleasantly surprised. It just did what it was supposed to do and I was pleased with how it felt ‘normal’ in a sense.
      Glad you like yours!

These fast charging stations are meant to be used for road trips. No EV owners should or would be stopping to charge from 60% to 80%. You just keep driving for the day until you get home and then plug in at home and wake up to that 80% every day. It’s not like a gas car. The higher your state of charge, the slower it charges. So if you’re at 70% state of charge it’s going to take longer to try to reach 100%. Just like your phone. You can go from 2% up to 50% in about 5-10 mins. But if you plug your phone in with 90%, it will probably still take 10-15 mins to feed the battery that last 10% of charge

Makes sense! For a rental weekend I was trying to experiment and see what would work best.
Turning it in with a decent charge was on my mind, even though I don’t know if they’d penalize me or not for turning it in below 80%

@@RubberCityMotoring not exactly sure what the rental return state of charge is required. But in all honesty, I’m not sure I would recommend to rent an EV for a weekend in an unknown area. EV for ownership and as a daily driver I would totally recommend as long as you have a place to charge at home/work

For home charging, you could just upgrade one of your outlets to a higher amperage/voltage and you’ll be fine to charge over night. I’ll never understand anyone, at this point in time, paying the same or more for a non Tesla EV. The other charging experiences suck and cost way more. Then stack up the features, safety and performance. It’s literally a no brainer. Unless you have a weird thing going on where you’re so against Tesla that you choose to pay more for an inferior product.

Yea I figured as much for home charging.
I guess it’s all preference. Call me crazy, but I like some extra buttons in my car. Haha.

@@RubberCityMotoring I thought I would not like the No button minimalist interior when I got my Model 3 five years ago. My wife hated it for the first month. Now she doesn’t want to drive anything other than the Tesla and we’ll likely be buying one of these used Teslas from hertz for cheap. But once you have your preferences set up they stick to your driver profile. So it’s pretty much set it and forget it. It remembers where you want your vents pointed. If you want your seat heat on. Your favorite driving destinations etc. Now all those buttons are just useless and add to these OEMs cost and manufacturing. I keep going back to the cell phone analogies, how many buttons did phones used to have back in 2005? And how many do they have now?

@stevenvillarreal226 sure. What you’re saying makes sense.

@@RubberCityMotoring but there’s always a place for fun, powerful, luxury etc type cars. Never going to sell my 96 Impala or my 71 Chevelle. But those aren’t daily drivers anymore. And always gotta have a beater car. The work horse in the stable. But look forward to more of your videos 👍🏽
