1. Even a temporary possession of USD is still beneficial for the US. If you bought 365$ for a transaction which takes a day and you conduct such a transaction every year, this is equivalent to a permanent ownership of 1$. So a lot of USDs have been hanging in the world's economy this way.
2. The US imports 20-30% more than it exports every year. This deficit is being financed through printing of new USDs. Ownership of USD is an investment into the US economy, because the US can (and regularly does) print the money. Through gradual devaluation of the USD, the US takes the money from you. In a way, the whole world has been financing the US and its dysfunctional economy for decades.
3. The US just would not want this to stop.

That's coming from someone living in Europe. If Trump will follow up on his intentions, to give tax cuts to the wealthy. He will have to find money to balance these tax cuts. He will inevitably find this money by cutting social security, cutting the affordable care act also known as Obama care and enforcing tariffs which are paid by the US citizens.
