  • On Wednesday 21st March 1945, the RAF's 140 Wing of De Havilland Mosquito FB.VI fighter bombers, with an escort of Mustangs, attacked the Shellhus in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Shellhus was the HQ for the Gestapo in Denmark, and most of the Danish Resistance's top men were within its walls. The low-level attack would be the last in a series flown by the men of 140 Wing that feature in Rowland White's latest book, Mosquito. There is more to the tale than the aircraft and the men and women of the Danish Resistance are as remarkable as the aircraft that flew down Copenhagen's streets that chilly March morning.

I really am looking forward to the future book on the Tornado. I was an exchange student back in 1988 in the Bavarian Alps south of Munich and I used to watch Tornados practicing low level flying through the mountains. They seemed to appear overhead out of nowhere and it was an awesome sight and sound!

I do keep nagging Rowland about that.

@@damcasterspod I also wish that he or his publisher would release his Mosquito book as an audiobook. I have his Harrier book as an audiobook. It’s free for Audible premium subscribers

I believe it is out there, I remember chatting with Rowland about it. He said it was read by the same chap as Harrier

I hage a lot of time for Rowland White's writing. Well researched an always engaging coverage of the subject matter. Of all his books i've read i have to say i am finding Harrier 809 the hardest to get through. It seems heavy and plodding compared with something like Vulcan 607.

I'm surprised at that, I really enjoyed 809. I thought the detail of teh build up of the squadron vs the realities of getting it to the South Atlantic really facinating.

Great interview. Should have way more views. Keep at it. You’ll reach a tipping point. I’m reading the book and really enjoying it. Great to hear the author discussing it.

IIRC the A-20 was widely exported. The USAAF only bought limited numbers of them.

Yes, just about every Allied nation flew them, the RAF called them Bostons.

@@damcasterspod …. In 1942 the USAAF needed every combat aircraft it could get. By 1943 the AF was standardizing on aircraft types. In 1943 the B-25 was available in large numbers for the USAAF. Whereas the A-20 was sold abroad. Choices were made. Not always for the best aircraft types.

Quite a few A-20s were sent to Russia, where they were popular with crews. The A-20 was used in the anti-shipping role in the Pacific too. And, a night-fighter version, the P-70 was also developed and deployed.

What about the anti shipping role that they excelled in too

    • @damcasterspod

That will certainly be a topic to cover. This video is mainly about 2TAF's Mossies and 140 Wing. When it comes to the anti-shipping role, I may be biased but, I think the Beaufighter was better in that role. Comparing the Banff and North Coates strike wings might make for a very interesting debate.
