They’re pretty good by themselves, with good dexterity. Not great with a phone though. As for sizes, depends on the size and length of your fingers. There are sizing guides on their website.
Wow!! Very impressed with the photography gear! At the end of the video I especially liked the Celestron Astro gear. I owned a Celestron 8 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with equatorial mount and electronic tracking back in the 90's and sure wish I still had it! Also had a Bushnell 5" Schmidt-Cassegrain table top with electronic motor for tracking objects. It's like all the guitars I wish I still had even though I still have my main keepers. lol
Wow. Great video. I loved that you interspersed it with sample photos - absolutely beautiful sample photos! I was going to ask you if you had done a tutorial on astrophotography, but then you produced that amazing “telescope.”. Would you consider a tutorial on astrophotography using more “normal” camera gear?
I am heavily invested in Nikon but also had an R5 kit. I traded my R5 kit for a Nikon Z 600mm f4. I’m super happy with my lens but I loved the R5. Oh well, have to give something up😂 I did keep my 5D Mark IV though…I love that camera!
Thank you Simon for sharing your considerable photographic knowledge with the community. The information has been fantastic. Before my recent trip to Alaska to photograph the Northern Lights, I viewed a number of your videos. They were extremely helpful. Thank you. I noticed on this segment about gear that you have a Synology storage system. Have you produced a video that walks through your workflow from taking the shot all the way through to backing up your work? I am interested on your filing system, specifically nomenclature and how you back up cards up i.e., by date, subject matter or by location? Do you use an offsite backup strategy as well? When do you decide to reformat your cards to reuse them? Do you recommend in a two card system like the Nikon Z7 II, that one use the second card slot as a duplicate of the primary card? Best wishes and thank you again.🖖
i have everything you have almost but need more practice. Telescope and drone tooo. never thought about making youtube channel or instragram, you just opened my eyes.
Maybe I missed it, but what do you use to charge your Canon batteries when at home? I have two batteries and one charger that only takes one battery at a time, which makes charging them a pain.
@@simon_dentremont thanks! Have you considered or used one of those multi-battery third-party chargers? I was considering one of those at some point but had my reservations
Hi Simon, one thing you mentioned early in the video caught my attention - shooters using Canon T series possibly moving to a Canon 7D II. I have a T6s and am looking at upgrading to something else with better specs. It would be great if you did a video and expanded on this topic for us enthusiast shooters looking to upgrade. I know there is a lot of attention being paid to mirrorless these days, so it's a challenge to sort through it all. The other thing is lens - what to get that will be compatible later on if switching again etc. I shoot a mix of things - landscape, architectural, and starting to do some bird photos. Thanks, your videos are great and inspiring.
Any idea if a RASA can be converted to/from a regular Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope? If so, I will probably purchase a nice used one when my next job starts.
@@simon_dentremont , I am jump starting this hobby and I am going with Canon these days. My kids got me a Rebel T7 which i understand is an entry camera. I was thinking of not upgrading, but completing it.
About travel bags - What are you using to travel with your 600mm f4? And does what you use allow you to bring it as a carry-on or is it just too big for that?
Not really. I tried it, and your'e left with very few working focus points, a small field of view, and higher ISO. I do use that combo with my R5 and it works well (and did with my 5d IV), but not a crop sensor camera. Best left to full frames.
Beautiful nightscape and deep sky photography! When you said you were going to show us your astrophoto rig I thought it would be a Star Adventurer tracker. It was a RASA! I reviewed the 11-inch for Sky & Telescope several years ago. Incredible speed and resolution. Thanks for the gear tour. I’m enjoying your videos and adventures with Gavin. Clear skies!
Thanks for this insight. Very educational! It will be some time before I upgrade my EOS Kiss X10 to an R5 or R6, etc. but now I have an idea of what to aim for. For now, though, I will continue on practising my technique and just trying my best to take photos of birds and other wildlife. This weekend I got myself a second-hand SIGMA 150-500mm telescopic lens, which is probably about 15 years old now but it's in great condition and seems to do the job for an amateur such as myself. At 28,000 yen (I guess around 230 USD now?) I couldn't let it go!
Hi Simon, do you use a UV filter ? instead of the lens cover ? I find that with L glass lens EF 100 - 400, I'm getting ghost-ing effects, its not sharp its almost like there are two images overlayed..
@@simon_dentremont Thank you so much for getting back to me.. I'm was tearing my hairs - as I've ruined over 2000 photos.. I guess - that life, you've to learn.
You listed the Sirui Traveler 7C tripod, but I can't see you talking about it in the video. I've been borrowing but now its time to get my own tripod. And I found that Siriu at a bargain, but I'm guessing you take a chance in that $150 range so I might go for something I can test in a store. Any thoughts on cheaper tripods? My hardest thing is to try and catch the moon, but as I aim and tighten, the ones I've tried often sag a bit so I have to aim above and hope it results in a good composition. Oh, and if I do get a Nikon 200-500, will these beginner tripods cut it?
The sirui is great for landscapes and hiking around with small lenses. Super tripod. But, it’s not meant for larger lenses like a 200-500. I’d spend $400 at least for that.
So I started my photography journey pursuing astro photography, I invested in my full kit and have been doing it for about 2 years. Now I'm starting my wildlife journey and have been watching a lot of your videos, but look at that!!! You do Astro photos! This made me happy haha. What mount do you use with that RASA? EQ6-R? Great photos and awesome gear!
I'm considering moving into a mirrorless system this summer. I'm currently using EOS 5D MK III. Any lens issues to move up? I have way too much invested in my lenses to even consider replacing them.
my experience is that adapted, EF lenses work great including autofocus. It’s a worthwhile upgrade…the new Canon mirrorless bodies are awesome. I have a video comparing the R5 and R6 if you’re debating which.
Im planning on upgrading from an EOS 60d to a 7D MKII in late october, do you think the 7D MKII is still a good Action/Wild life camera? Hows the low light performance? i plan on doing Rodeo Photography with it with my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8
While it's still a good camera, the 90D, R7 and R10 are also worth considering for features like eye-autofocus and a more modern sensor better in low light. If the light will be really poor, a used 5D mark IV full-frame camera would serve you better, if filling the frame with it isn't an issue (as your subject is smaller in the frame on full-frame cameras)
@@simon_dentremont I dont want to go RF because I have a lot of EF and EF-S lenses, and I like the 7D MKII because of the superior auto focusing to the 90D. What's your opinion on adapting RF to EF? and does the 90d have the Eye focus? On my 60D is shoot at 700sec Iso 3200 f2.8 for rodeo photography and it's usually a stop and a half under exposed, how high can you take the iso on the 7D MKII until it becomes too noisy
Hi, I would like to know the brand of the arca swiss adapter for your Manfrotto adapter and the plate to go with. I've tried for a long time looking for an adapter for my 502HD and all I can find is cheap adapters that could potentially go wrong or too small, or overly complex adapters with no plates that comes with it. This one shown in the video looks very sturdy.
Kirk Arca-Type Quick Release Bridge System for Manfrotto MVH 502AH Head I use the 500ah with a Kirk Enterprise Solutions bridge plate and it's the best!
I’m just starting out at the young age of 57. My camera is the Nikon D750 and I am considering Nikon’s 500mm PF lens. I was wondering how necessary are the camo clothing and equipment coverings in wildlife photography? Love your videos.
The camo for the lens is mainly to protect it, which will be handy for resale. The 500 PF is a great lens. The camo for yourself isn’t needed for most species. Just wear drab colours of your environment…browns or greens.
Great video once again. Question, how do you deal with lens in extreme cold and what kind of care I should apply? Talking around -15 to -30 Celcius (maybe less in the future if I happen to photograph northern lights for example). May have some risk of condensations, I've been shooting outside recently at those temperatures but had no issues but some comrades told me I could damage my equipment but I was not sure how much he' was knowledgeable about that stuff.
Being in the cold isn‘t an issue..it’s coming back into a warm house that risks condensation. When you come inside, leave your lens in a camera bag or in the garage to acclimatize slowly for several hours before exposing it to room temperature air.
Hi Simon, I enjoy watching all your videos! Very informative and inspiring! Just a quick question, do you keep all your equipment in a electrical dry box? If yes, it must be huge...or do you have a couple of them? Thank you for sharing.
Simon, I'm a new subscriber and you've helped me immensely already with your tips ect. I would love to see a video on how you set up your R6 for video. Thank you.....Bob in South Dakota
I have heard you say you like astrophotography. I have had telescopes for years, but I am just now deciding to try my hand at astrophotography. Do you use a Star Tracker for any of your shots and if so do you have a recommended model?
Nikon shooter but love your stuff. I have been watching everything 500 f4 because I am just about to commit to a beautiful used copy of Nikon’s most recent version which is only 6.8 or so pounds
Hey Simon, I am using a 6D Mk2 for landscape and portraits and looking to get into nature more. I am thinking of coupling a 100-400 with a 7D MK2 to give extra reach. Is this a sensible combo?
Great video Simon, and you've got a lot of stuff to lug around. About astrophotography I'm still using the old version of ASIair, but not so much unfortunately!
The best tool is to get a directional shotgun mic that targets where it’s pointed and cancels out noise from the sides. I don’t do any cleanup with software. Shotgun mics are designed for this and have slits in the sides to detect sound from there and remove it digitally from the recording, leaving only the sound captured from the front.
@@simon_dentremont I'm using a shotgun mike (RODE NTG-2) and added in the shotgun that fits onto the recorder (Zoom H6). I'm considering using an omni on the recorder, then recording with it and the shotgun and seeing if I can subtract the ambient sounds that the omni picks up. I don't know if that is possible. Trying to learn Lightroom, starting a class in PhotoShop next month. Since I have it, was going to fiddle with Adobe Audition for the sound (my brain is on overload). I've had this stuff for over 10 years, lost interest and now back at it. Unfortunately, I'm in an urban environment and it takes a bit to get out to the "wide open spaces" with less noise and more wildlife. It just means I need to try a bit harder. Your videos are invaluable to me. As you see from my endless barrage of questions.
@@timothytapio4252 You have the gear. I don’t know why you’re having a challenge with it. I also don’t know if your technique will work, but good luck!
@@simon_dentremont I believe the lack of experience at this point. My recordings may be due to the gain set too high...my hearing isn't like it was 60 years ago. Today will be a practive recording day and maybe a bit of research on a couple state parks, one of which is listed as a lot of bird species. And while it's still dark, more of your videos.

Just wow! i really loved the celestron thing. I didnt know much about them. You are fully equipped hahaha
Thanks! 😃
It's like all the guitars I wish I still had even though I still have my main keepers. lol
Very cool!
Wow. Great video. I loved that you interspersed it with sample photos - absolutely beautiful sample photos! I was going to ask you if you had done a tutorial on astrophotography, but then you produced that amazing “telescope.”. Would you consider a tutorial on astrophotography using more “normal” camera gear?
Noted! I do have one on Milky Way photography. Check it out.
I am heavily invested in Nikon but also had an R5 kit. I traded my R5 kit for a Nikon Z 600mm f4. I’m super happy with my lens but I loved the R5. Oh well, have to give something up😂 I did keep my 5D Mark IV though…I love that camera!
What do you think about the canon 24-70 2.8 lens fro general and landscape
solid lens, but some people may find that 24mm isnt wide enough for some scenes.
Best wishes and thank you again.🖖
here you go! ua-cam.com/video/l3APXEX5mjc/v-deo.htmlsi=qwMwRPE0mzOLGD21
i have everything you have almost but need more practice. Telescope and drone tooo. never thought about making youtube channel or instragram, you just opened my eyes.
Maybe I missed it, but what do you use to charge your Canon batteries when at home? I have two batteries and one charger that only takes one battery at a time, which makes charging them a pain.
I have 2 chargers and 5 batteries so I just make sure I always have fresh ones available.
Great idea!
Any idea if a RASA can be converted to/from a regular Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope? If so, I will probably purchase a nice used one when my next job starts.
Not exactly the same, but you can convert a Scmidt-Cassegrain using Hyperstar
@Simon, this is so informative which sparked my interested in getting a second camera. Do you mind sharing feedback on the 7D Mark ii? Thanks.
It’s a solid camera, but getting a bit old. It will definitely get you good pics, even for its age. A more modern R10 or R7 will outperform it though.
@@simon_dentremont , I am jump starting this hobby and I am going with Canon these days. My kids got me a Rebel T7 which i understand is an entry camera. I was thinking of not upgrading, but completing it.
Simon, can you use the Sigma art series lens 20 mm 1.4 lens on your Canon R5? Thanks Mario
Yes, with the EF/RF adapter as my Sigma is the Canon-EF mount version. Great lens for milky way.
About travel bags - What are you using to travel with your 600mm f4? And does what you use allow you to bring it as a carry-on or is it just too big for that?
A Gura Gear 30L. I bring it as carry on. Use code Simon1 for 10pct off!
@@simon_dentremontThank you very much.
What are your thoughts on a Canon Rebel SL3 paired with a Tamron 150-600mm F/5-6.3 G2 for a hobbyist bird photographer? It's my current setup.
That’s a solid setup.
As someone using a 7D mkii and a ef 100-400 mkii, would you ever recommend a 1.4x teleconverter?
Not really. I tried it, and your'e left with very few working focus points, a small field of view, and higher ISO. I do use that combo with my R5 and it works well (and did with my 5d IV), but not a crop sensor camera. Best left to full frames.
@@simon_dentremont Thank you so much for the reply, and for all your help in every video.
@@adrikrotten880 welcome!
Thanks Alan! I’ve enjoyed many of your writings over the years and recognize your name.
No, I never use them, nor do I advise using one.
@@simon_dentremont Thank you so much for getting back to me.. I'm was tearing my hairs - as I've ruined over 2000 photos.. I guess - that life, you've to learn.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing! How many years of collecting gear?
About 8.
Super fun! I was hoping you would get to the astrophotography gear, which I'd seen in one of your Instagram videos. Cool to see it again.
I’ll make one soon on the whole process to taking an astrophoto.
Yup, great mount for the money.
@@simon_dentremont Awesome! That's one that is on my list for future mounts, I settled on the Gem28 by iOptron.
Thanks for the informative videos!
Very informative. Thank you, Simon.
Glad you enjoyed it
Im planning on upgrading from an EOS 60d to a 7D MKII in late october, do you think the 7D MKII is still a good Action/Wild life camera?
@@cavanhoward479 with the adapter it doesn't really matter. It works great like really great
Hi, I would like to know the brand of the arca swiss adapter for your Manfrotto adapter and the plate to go with. I've tried for a long time looking for an adapter for my 502HD and all I can find is cheap adapters that could potentially go wrong or too small, or overly complex adapters with no plates that comes with it. This one shown in the video looks very sturdy.
Kirk Arca-Type Quick Release Bridge System for Manfrotto MVH 502AH Head
I use the 500ah with a Kirk Enterprise Solutions bridge plate and it's the best!
Thanks!
Thanks for the info.
@@simon_dentremont thanks for the answer, I don't have garage but I usually let my camera/lens rest in my Lowepro backpack once I'm back home 👍
Hi Simon, I enjoy watching all your videos! Very informative and inspiring! Just a quick question, do you keep all your equipment in a electrical dry box? If yes, it must be huge...or do you have a couple of them? Thank you for sharing.
No, just camera bags and a messy room!
Very informative , many thanks for making these videos.
My pleasure!
Simon, I'm a new subscriber and you've helped me immensely already with your tips ect. I would love to see a video on how you set up your R6 for video. Thank you.....Bob in South Dakota
Thanks for the idea!
I would put a airtag in each of those bags, especially when traveling! Cheap insurance!
good god on the astrophotography lens!!
I know!
I have heard you say you like astrophotography. I have had telescopes for years, but I am just now deciding to try my hand at astrophotography. Do you use a Star Tracker for any of your shots and if so do you have a recommended model?
I use a full scale mounts, Sky Watcher EQ6
Nikon shooter but love your stuff. I have been watching everything 500 f4 because I am just about to commit to a beautiful used copy of Nikon’s most recent version which is only 6.8 or so pounds
great lens.
Hey Simon, I am using a 6D Mk2 for landscape and portraits and looking to get into nature more. I am thinking of coupling a 100-400 with a 7D MK2 to give extra reach. Is this a sensible combo?
Yup. Version Ii of the Canon 100-400 is quite a bit better that version I.
@simon_dentremont yes the 2 is my plan. 7d mk2 comes tomorrow. Thanks. Keep up the great vids
I never expected I'd be able to sit through a 36 minute video about gear! Now I need to go get a mop to clean up the drool. ;)
Oops! Sorry!
Love the astro gear! Which equatorial mount do you use? You should put affiliate links for that gear too. You’re a hell of a photographer!
Thanks Kevin! I use a Sky Watcher EQ6R Pro.
Thank's for a new good video.
The 2x teleconverter for nikon nearly robs all the light out of the sunniest day.
Thank you. All the best. 👍📷😎
Many thanks!
I have been looking at your videos for a few weeks, roughly one a day. Thank you. Do you have or plan to do bird photogrsphy field trips?
No plans yet, but I keep getting asked!
Hello Simon. What is the your opinion about EOS R7 like wildlife camera?
Simon do you think Canon will license 3rd party lenses for RF mount? Your vids are ENORMOUSLY helpful!
Not sure. Maybe they want to sell more RF first, and open up later.
Great video Simon, and you've got a lot of stuff to lug around. About astrophotography I'm still using the old version of ASIair, but not so much unfortunately!
Cool, thanks
I’m curious why you feel the need to carry binoculars when you can use your camera with the big lense like binoculars?
depends on the subject. holding up a big lens for a long time is tiring, and the field of view is very small for scanning looking for targets.
Hi Simon, speaking of gear. Suggestions on a place to get a warm camo jacket for harsher weather? Much appreciated.
I’ve bought them at anywhere from Cabellas, Canadian Tire and Marks Work Warehouse.
@@simon_dentremont you rock. Thx
what (if any) software do you use to clean up audio of birdsong? I seem to pick up a lot of ambient noise and would like to clean it up.
Excellent video showcasing your equipment. I enjoyed seeing your astronomy set up as I for many years was an astronomy aficionado. I built a 12.5 " f6 dobsonian telescope that I have logged over 3000 objects with. Again this was a great video and I would be very interested in knowing your past or current career background.
Thanks! I was a senior government official until I retired last year and started doing this professionally.
