    Holy cow! The most information-packed photography equipment video I have ever seen. Simon, please do a story on HOW you became such a knowledgeable professional. Did you go to school? Are you fully self taught? What was your path? As a beginner I find your expertise wonderful, but a bit intimidating…..WONDERFUL Videos!… Thank you for all your work learning, shooting, editing video…..Cheers!

      I agree, this would be a very interesting topic. In one video Simon notes that he retired from a desk job some time ago, prior to launching his UA-cam and photo travel business interests. Would be interesting to see if he was metely a hobbyist during his desk job career, or started transitioning to professional photographer during that career, his sources of learning, etc.

    That was hilarious. Before I nip into town and pick up an astro rig, i'll reciprocate all your favours with my top amateur tip: wear a pair of overalls. Lots of pockets; hard-wearing fabrics; two sizes too big gives you freedom from impingements as you struggle around on the ground; no concern regarding cost, especially if you get them free from your day job; and no-one will know that you're wearing just a mankini underneath. And finally - i'm enjoying learning a great deal through viewing your channel. I feel privileged, so thank you very much. Cheers from a cabin in a swamp in a rain-forest in New Zealand!

    Always interesting to see what someone - who actually is a professional photographer - is using. I started with videography, got into people photography and now I am dabbling into wildlife photography. Wildlife photography can feel quite overwhelming and very expensive tbh, so for someone like me - who is doing this as a hobby - it helps to know what really works and what not. Therefore I am rather investing my money in wildlife workshops atm.

I am a novice, only had one outing in the wild with my APC sensor camera and shot hundreds of meaningless images and boring typical perspectives, however because of people like you I am starting to understand more about cameras, lenses, and different perspectives or the purpose of going out and clicking pictures. Hi Simon, another great video! I have binged through most of you channel in the last few weeks! Fantastically informative. I have a question regarding 100-400 lens choice, I have a R6 and I am between getting a new RF 100-400 or alternatively a second hand EF 100-400 (the RF 100-500 looks great but a bit out of my budget), in your current set up are you using the EF 100-400 with the RF to EF converter and would you choose this set up over getting the more budget version RF 100-400 new? Before my recent trip to Alaska to photograph the Northern Lights, I viewed a number of your videos. They were extremely helpful. Thank you. I noticed on this segment about gear that you have a Synology storage system. Have you produced a video that walks through your workflow from taking the shot all the way through to backing up your work? I am interested on your filing system, specifically nomenclature and how you back up cards up i.e., by date, subject matter or by location? Do you use an offsite backup strategy as well? When do you decide to reformat your cards to reuse them? Do you recommend in a two card system like the Nikon Z7 II, that one use the second card slot as a duplicate of the primary card? Best wishes and thank you again.🖖

I have a T6s and am looking at upgrading to something else with better specs. It would be great if you did a video and expanded on this topic for us enthusiast shooters looking to upgrade. I know there is a lot of attention being paid to mirrorless these days, so it's a challenge to sort through it all. The other thing is lens - what to get that will be compatible later on if switching again etc. I shoot a mix of things - landscape, architectural, and starting to do some bird photos. Thanks, your videos are great and inspiring.

    You listed the Sirui Traveler 7C tripod, but I can't see you talking about it in the video. I've been borrowing but now its time to get my own tripod. And I found that Siriu at a bargain, but I'm guessing you take a chance in that $150 range so I might go for something I can test in a store. Any thoughts on cheaper tripods? My hardest thing is to try and catch the moon, but as I aim and tighten, the ones I've tried often sag a bit so I have to aim above and hope it results in a good composition. Oh, and if I do get a Nikon 200-500, will these beginner tripods cut it?

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  10 місяців тому +1

      The sirui is great for landscapes and hiking around with small lenses. Super tripod. But, it’s not meant for larger lenses like a 200-500. I’d spend $400 at least for that.

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  2 роки тому

      While it's still a good camera, the 90D, R7 and R10 are also worth considering for features like eye-autofocus and a more modern sensor better in low light. If the light will be really poor, a used 5D mark IV full-frame camera would serve you better, if filling the frame with it isn't an issue (as your subject is smaller in the frame on full-frame cameras)

I've tried for a long time looking for an adapter for my 502HD and all I can find is cheap adapters that could potentially go wrong or too small, or overly complex adapters with no plates that comes with it. This one shown in the video looks very sturdy.

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  Рік тому +2

      The camo for the lens is mainly to protect it, which will be handy for resale. The 500 PF is a great lens. The camo for yourself isn’t needed for most species. Just wear drab colours of your environment…browns or greens.

    Great video once again. Question, how do you deal with lens in extreme cold and what kind of care I should apply? Talking around -15 to -30 Celcius (maybe less in the future if I happen to photograph northern lights for example). May have some risk of condensations, I've been shooting outside recently at those temperatures but had no issues but some comrades told me I could damage my equipment but I was not sure how much he' was knowledgeable about that stuff.

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  Рік тому +1

      Being in the cold isn‘t an issue..it’s coming back into a warm house that risks condensation. When you come inside, leave your lens in a camera bag or in the garage to acclimatize slowly for several hours before exposing it to room temperature air.

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  Рік тому

      The best tool is to get a directional shotgun mic that targets where it’s pointed and cancels out noise from the sides. I don’t do any cleanup with software. Shotgun mics are designed for this and have slits in the sides to detect sound from there and remove it digitally from the recording, leaving only the sound captured from the front.

      @@simon_dentremont I'm using a shotgun mike (RODE NTG-2) and added in the shotgun that fits onto the recorder (Zoom H6). I'm considering using an omni on the recorder, then recording with it and the shotgun and seeing if I can subtract the ambient sounds that the omni picks up. I don't know if that is possible. Trying to learn Lightroom, starting a class in PhotoShop next month. Since I have it, was going to fiddle with Adobe Audition for the sound (my brain is on overload). I've had this stuff for over 10 years, lost interest and now back at it.
