Part 2! How do physicists understand quantum mechanics? What are the postulates and principles of quantum mechanics? How do the foundations of quantum mechanics compare to other theories? How do I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman!

Keep those questions about space, science, astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology coming to #AskASpaceman for COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF TIME AND SPACE! Music by Jason Grady and Nick Bain.
No idea how Dr. Sutter only has 44k subscribers. This guy is a national treasure when it comes to disseminating these complex topics. I could listen to him read me the phone book and be entertained. Everyone should watch him on ‘How the Universe Works.’
The best science channel on yt, imo
Christmas special: Dr Paul sits by a fire, reading a list of cheeses.
@@massimookissed1023 seen that too. Gave a copy to an old friend who is into that stuff.
At 2:50, I didn't understand "If I want to look at it [an electron], I have to bounce a photon off it and get it to my eye."
That makes it seem like our eye is "sending" a photon to the electron, instead of the electron just emitting the photon on it's own.
Or also, what about a video camera aimed at an electron.... is that camera "observing" the electron?
wait... but we aren't shooting photons out of our eyes.... so it shouldn't be dependent on the observer. I've always been told that the change has to do with the physical instrument being used to measure
You are correct it is.
About the fourth postulate, I thought that before _observation_ a particle have a superposition of all states possible instead of “no state”, like it’s suggested at 6:48. So the kid should have all inimaginable grades until being fixed (collapsed) by the _observation._ Which isn’t really the same.
@Naomi but it’s not. I mean, it’s not a grammatically thing. It’s embedded in the Quantum mechanics fundamental principles. A superposition of states is not equal no state. That’s weird, I know.
Can we glean macroscopic measurements from aggregate quantum experiments? At what point does probability and uncertainty become classical?
Hey, Paul! Would you say Minesweeper is a demonstration of a wave that gets measured and that winning is confirming the position of each particle that made-up the wave?
The first click always defines the structure of the rest of the game board.
So, you're saying that platform 9 3/4 doesn't exist?
Can another observation recreate statement of previously observed particle? And what if the same exact particle been observed by somebody else before us? 🤔
Well done, one of your best
Can there be 2 measurements exactly at the same instant, creating different results for the position?
I was in the fifth grade for what seemed an eternity just like that kid!
My last school grade was 7/8.
If I failed I'd be in 7th again and if I passed I'd be a freshman.
This was due to the fact we didn't understand migraines and I would often miss a lot of school and couldn't do work at home, on my own, because thinking with a migraine is like having a fever dream and this would hold me back.
But, if I hadn't missed all that school, I wouldn't have been able to watch: *Demonstrations in Physics* with Prof. Julius Sumner Miller and I probably wouldn't have any interest in physics at all.
Heard your dark matter cast recently, ignorant question? Does magnetism and gravity interact at large scales? Thought of those Sofia images of galactic magnetic fields and wondered.
Hnnnn, I didn't learn anything about the 7 fundamental statements, but I still feel totally baffled by the quantum world
"If you think you know quantum mechanic, - you do not know quantum mechanic" - Richard Feynman
🤨🤪😎How can possibly be true that quantum "unitarity" holds ... in an expanding universe?
This is not only a personal doubt of mine, but actually a concern debated upon among some TPs. 😉
Understanding how you so eloquently describe QM DrSutter, may be so but; and, Apologies for said but, Knowing QM in reality is quite another Matter indeed!?! {\}
❤ Very good 👍🏼
I know that the wave function of all atoms s that make up my brain are collapsed in total darkness ess (no photons involved) and no other consciousnesses looking at it.The consciousness within me collapses the wave function of all the atoms that make up my brain etc..
And on the Eighth Postulate he created the blue cheese.
That's not true.I collapse my own wave function in total darkness and no photons are involved. Also I collapse the wave function of all the atoms that a t make up my brain in total darkness (no photons involved) and with no other beings looking at me.I no that the wave function function of all the atoms that make up my brain
Observation is measurement.
Measurement is Creation.
Light measures itself using two parts:
Electro/Magnetism.
Light is a waveform that can see and attract itself. Any intelligent code contained within electromagnetic signals can easily see and modify itself.
The collapse of the wavefunction is not random, it is probabilistic and deterministic, evolving simultaneously with this elusive, intelligent energy we call "Will". We are Visionaries in the highest sense.
I highly recommend watch 3blue1brown's video on the uncertainty principle if you want a clearer understanding of quantum mechanics.
What a load of utter bollocks
So, you don't live in this universe? To say you can gather perfect information is ridiculous. You live here just like everything else and interact with it. No matter what you do momentum & energy have to be conserved. There might be a large number of indirect interaction that are ASSumed to be accounted for - but that would a belief - not science.
