In Otto's defense: The fog can mess with your mind like we saw in the fight, Otto can communicate with animals, so it's possible he heard what the whale was saying, and Subaru blurted out that he's the reason they were being chased. Dick move, sure, but I can't exactly blame him. Plus he did at least send his ground dragon to pick up Subaru before he got killed by the witch cultists.
To address the confusion for you at the end: Echidna called herself the witch of greed. (Regulus in e1 was called the archbishop of greed, it was the white haired dude that fucked up crush and her army) Satella is called the witch of envy. Also if you remember back people said there is only 1 witch when people talk about witches and this is Satella the witch of envy. Now you have direct confirmations that there are more witches (well.. atleast one since she just introduced herself) Remember tho... All the Satella and Witch stuff happened 400 years ago when people talk about witches. Now you finally directly heard that Beatrice is a spirit. There were a shitton of hints already. She has a deep connection to puck, she is contracted to protect the library and formed a contract with subaru to protect him. And most importantly! Subaru is said to have a insane affinity towards Spirits. It was stated multiple times. And since the beginning of season 1 people are REALLY surprised that subaru can break beatrices door crossing ability and find her all the time. Makes sense now that you know she is a spirit huh? Also remember that both subaru and beatrice share the dark element for magic affinity. As for betty in this episode its super interesting. She calls Puck brother, mentioned already that she is super old, now its confirmed that she is a spirit. She exactly knew what the gospel was, looked sad that BetelGEUSE died and said you left me alone now too? So its confirmed that she somehow knew him and had a good relationship to him. Whats up with that. Also interesting that she asked subaru why it had to be him to kill him and what happened to the witches factor after sloth died. Regarding emilia and her "selfish" reasons for the throne. She mentioned this episode that she cannot really talk about why it is a selfish reason. Lets say she has a good reason to call it selfish and ofc as always the show will explain stuff in due time so you will see :D To keep it spoilerfree there will be A LOT of character development in this season for multiple chars, so chances are good that a lot of questions you might have now will be answered sooner or later :D
Yes, Betty is a spirit. And whenever she refers to Puck, she calls him _nii-chan._ They translate it as the cutesy nickname "Bubby," but you could also translate it as "big bro" since _nii_ means "older brother" and the _-chan_ honorific gives it a cute/endearing quality.

Betty is indeed a great spirit, similar to Puck. Subaru does have a high affinity for spirits, though even he didn't realize that she was a spirit up until now lol. His ability to almost always know where she is still seems to be a mystery for now. Frederica was the head maid at Roswaal Manor for many years before Subaru arrived, so Rem and Ram know her well. And now Petra has joined the ranks as well. And lastly we have Echidna...I can't really talk about her without spoliers, so I'll just wait for the next episode lol

When Rem remembers his past in the forest while fighting with the dogs there is a scene in which Frederica appears. That's the fun thing about re zero, little scenes that you think have no relevance and just forget are really important in the future of the series. like the story in the children's book with which Subaru learns to read, and the story about Satella, the witch of envy who almost destroyed half of the world or the lugunica dragon who protects the kingdom as long as its contract exists.

He watched the original release of Frozen Bonds which doesn’t have Echidna’s voice over. They rereleased Frozen Bonds after season 2 aired since they had Echidna’s VA now.
Frederica was briefly shown in the backstory episode of rem and ram If I'm not mistaken it was episode 11. So that's probably were you remember her from. For clarification there were 7 witches representing one of every sin which are envy, greed, gluttony, lust, wrath, pride and sloth. The archbishops represent one of the sins currently there being 5 with the pride seat not being taken and sloth being dead. There are a couple of other things about the witches but those would involve spoilers. But you will see with time.

Sufferu... Ma-beast refers to the Magic/Demonic/Witch Beast. the word 'Ma' can be interpreted differently under different contexts; it can be magic/demon/monster... Usually paired with other words to bring out the context. Like Ma-hou = magic / demonic spell; Ma-jou = magic woman (aka witch); Ma-ju = magic/demonic beast; Ma-ou = Demon King or Magic King depending on context and setting; etc.. Puck has the same VA as Rudeus and Emilia has the same VA as Megumin and Ai Hoshino. Big Puck looks like a giant mountain cat/lynx/bobcat.
Also a witch factor, just for reference, is an ability an arch bishop has that relates to the sin. Similar to Lye’s (arch bishop of gluttony) ability to eat names and memories, Betelgeus (the bishop of sloth) had the invisible hand as an ability. The ability comes at a cost if the host isn’t fully compatible though, that’s why betelgeus had to bit his hands to use his ability since it caused great pain since he was basically the complete opposite of sloth. Also witch factors transfer to a new host when the past host is killed thus betty was asking if subaru inherited the factor

All the arch bishops, as well as Priscilla's servant Aldeberan are named after stars in the real world that don't exist in this universe. Subaru himself is named after a constellation of Seven stars. In japan, it's known as Subaru, but in other places it's called "Pleiades"

Violet eyes were also mentioned. Emilia is almost a copy of her from the description. The witch at the end of the series doesn't have pointed ears, her face doesn't look like Emilia at all. Only the hair might look the same, because of the drawing. But only at first glance. Emilia's hair color is different even in the anime.

In Otto's defense: The fog can mess with your mind like we saw in the fight, Otto can communicate with animals, so it's possible he heard what the whale was saying, and Subaru blurted out that he's the reason they were being chased. Dick move, sure, but I can't exactly blame him. Plus he did at least send his ground dragon to pick up Subaru before he got killed by the witch cultists.
otto became crazy when he heard the white whale voice, due to his dp, as we know happen to those who hear it in the figth much later on.
To address the confusion for you at the end:
Echidna called herself the witch of greed. (Regulus in e1 was called the archbishop of greed, it was the white haired dude that fucked up crush and her army)
Satella is called the witch of envy.
Also if you remember back people said there is only 1 witch when people talk about witches and this is Satella the witch of envy.
Now you have direct confirmations that there are more witches (well.. atleast one since she just introduced herself)
Remember tho... All the Satella and Witch stuff happened 400 years ago when people talk about witches.
Now you finally directly heard that Beatrice is a spirit. There were a shitton of hints already. She has a deep connection to puck, she is contracted to protect the library and formed a contract with subaru to protect him.
And most importantly! Subaru is said to have a insane affinity towards Spirits. It was stated multiple times.
And since the beginning of season 1 people are REALLY surprised that subaru can break beatrices door crossing ability and find her all the time.
Makes sense now that you know she is a spirit huh? Also remember that both subaru and beatrice share the dark element for magic affinity.
As for betty in this episode its super interesting. She calls Puck brother, mentioned already that she is super old, now its confirmed that she is a spirit.
She exactly knew what the gospel was, looked sad that BetelGEUSE died and said you left me alone now too? So its confirmed that she somehow knew him and had a good relationship to him. Whats up with that.
Also interesting that she asked subaru why it had to be him to kill him and what happened to the witches factor after sloth died.
Regarding emilia and her "selfish" reasons for the throne. She mentioned this episode that she cannot really talk about why it is a selfish reason.
Lets say she has a good reason to call it selfish and ofc as always the show will explain stuff in due time so you will see :D
To keep it spoilerfree there will be A LOT of character development in this season for multiple chars, so chances are good that a lot of questions you might have now will be answered sooner or later :D
Yes, Betty is a spirit. And whenever she refers to Puck, she calls him _nii-chan._ They translate it as the cutesy nickname "Bubby," but you could also translate it as "big bro" since _nii_ means "older brother" and the _-chan_ honorific gives it a cute/endearing quality.
Actually she says ni-cha(にーちゃ) which is why no one consider that she's calling him as big bro.

Betty is indeed a great spirit, similar to Puck. Subaru does have a high affinity for spirits, though even he didn't realize that she was a spirit up until now lol. His ability to almost always know where she is still seems to be a mystery for now. Frederica was the head maid at Roswaal Manor for many years before Subaru arrived, so Rem and Ram know her well. And now Petra has joined the ranks as well. And lastly we have Echidna...I can't really talk about her without spoliers, so I'll just wait for the next episode lol
for the fact that he always get the good door, i heard an explanation, it's because the spell on the doors is shadow magic and he had an affinity with it. but i don't really remember if that explanation is canon

He watched the original release of Frozen Bonds which doesn’t have Echidna’s voice over. They rereleased Frozen Bonds after season 2 aired since they had Echidna’s VA now.
Frederica was briefly shown in the backstory episode of rem and ram If I'm not mistaken it was episode 11. So that's probably were you remember her from.
For clarification there were 7 witches representing one of every sin which are envy, greed, gluttony, lust, wrath, pride and sloth. The archbishops represent one of the sins currently there being 5 with the pride seat not being taken and sloth being dead.
There are a couple of other things about the witches but those would involve spoilers. But you will see with time.

Also a witch factor, just for reference, is an ability an arch bishop has that relates to the sin. Similar to Lye’s (arch bishop of gluttony) ability to eat names and memories, Betelgeus (the bishop of sloth) had the invisible hand as an ability. The ability comes at a cost if the host isn’t fully compatible though, that’s why betelgeus had to bit his hands to use his ability since it caused great pain since he was basically the complete opposite of sloth. Also witch factors transfer to a new host when the past host is killed thus betty was asking if subaru inherited the factor

Throughout the first season, you were reminded that Satella (the witch of Envy) is a half elf with silver hair. Not white. Violet eyes were also mentioned. Emilia is almost a copy of her from the description. The witch at the end of the series doesn't have pointed ears, her face doesn't look like Emilia at all. Only the hair might look the same, because of the drawing. But only at first glance. Emilia's hair color is different even in the anime.
