Got one and slapped a Neo 2T on it and I can't imagine riding indoors without the MP1! I get it's expensive but I'm still happy with the purchase, just adds to the overall Zwift experience.
Apart from some great nuggets of information and tips, one of the main things I love about your videos is your honesty. Gave a throughly great user opinion on a unit that the company sent you though. And you dont sugar coat the cost. I agree cost is ridiculous, and indoor cycling as good as it has progressed in the years ain't going to out do outdoor. Not a wonder why so many build their own. Nice one. Keep up the great videos 👍
You had me when you said COMFORT!! For me comfort on a trainer is a big problem once I get beyond an hour. With winter weather, which you Aussies don't have, I spend 5 to 10 hrs indoors. Agree it's expensive but looks like it's built to last and Saris has a good reputation for support if there were ever any issues. This is on my list of must haves before next winter. My Dad always says, " You get what you pay for."
The fact that the big companies Wahoo and Tacx now have trainers with fore/aft with their Kickr Move and Motion plates implies this provides a more important movement on a trainer than side to side. I can see why side to side seems the obvious choice but the unnatural indoor translation based on Shane’s review seems to confirm this. They are selling these MP1s cheaper now if you can find one but what I like is not having to faff around keeping balls inflated to the right pressure on other rockers generally on the market.
I’d be keen to see it with a Kickr Climb instead of the front wheel block. I agree with you on the price point. 1199 is crazy money, but I’d easily drop 499 on one.
Great review, as always. How long before we see the next-gen smart bikes with a bit of fore and aft movement built in? Add that to a Kickr bike with the climb function, rethink the crazy pricing and I think we're onto something. 😁👍🏽
I re-watched your video after riding on my MP1 over the past couple of weeks. I am glad I did because I had missed the part concerning tightening the rear straps with an Allen wrench. I blame that on trying to read the very, very small printing in the accompanying manual with these old eyes. I have enjoyed the unit. I had the Wahoo Kickr, which I sold because I was nervous about using it on this unit and am glad I did. The Kickr seemed more like an interesting toy compared to the MP1 which actually improved my Zwift experience.
Great Review as always. Just to let you know I have been running the Tacx Steering Track with a 2T since I got the MP1 about a month ago and it feels much better than locking the front in. I just drilled two holes in the Tacx Track and used the t bars and knobs (with some 3d printed spacers) and its mounted in place on the MP1.
Saris did a great job engineering the fore/aft motion assembly...with the curved, gravity-centering rolling. Seems much more well designed than the various homemade spring loaded solutions I see posted. But the cost for these is outrageous, and I do not see based on the Saris patent list that there’s anything to prevent knock-offs on the motion assembly. I’ll await the refined knockoffs at that cost (or when Saris is forced to get out of the stratosphere!)
Great review. I've been looking at rocker plates for a few weeks now and have noticed that there are quite a few "DYI" (do it yourself) plans out there that have "front / back & side to side" movements out there. Have you had any comments on these? Since you were mentioning price point, these end up going for much less and seem to provide an acceptable ride. What do you think? Thanks again for your great product reviews!
Can’t wait for the competition to drive down the outrageous price! PLEASE, someone / some company bring a lower cost option to the market with the same features!
Shane what about trying this with the Elite Sterzo block? It's a better combo than the Wahoo Climbr...(although both are unsupported which adds to the appeal I guess).
I have been using one for a little over a month now. Started with the block, then put my Kickr climb on it. It works well but I find that on hard standing efforts the climb moves left or right making the whole setup no longer centered.. There needs to be something to keep it on place. Maybe an L bracket on both sides of the front track that locks in with the factory t-bolt. I will probably have to make it myself. I doubt Saris will make something to help Wahoo out...
Great video 👍🏻 Agree totally on price, I’d buy one but not at that price. If it comes down I’d certainly consider it. Completely OT, what are the bottle cages on your bike?
Very interesting but needs to be far more minimalist. Tried the new Elite front steering turntable at TDU....that’s really something. They’re anticipating just $50 for the non smart version when released in a month or two.
Concrete Head Interesting concept however a carbon steerer tube would be ground to a pulp in no time. The Elite steerer plate is quite impressive,it has a slight centering function, better than the Kinetic turntable I have.
As with others who have commented, it's nice but too high priced. If Saris would sell the H3 with MP1 at the same price as Tacx Neo, then you have a game changer.
@@gplama Looks like I owe you a coffee then. Was able to pick one up though work with discount although when it arrived a couple of the roller wheels were damaged in transit. Saris are doing the right thing and sending me a repair kit with fitting tool to sort it out + instructional video. So I don't know if this is a common problem with these huge boxes getting chucked about.
SamLGND Great though lockdown, makes the turbo a lot more comfortable for longer periods, very well made. But still not sure about the price, I think I’ve paid for their R&D, glad to have it.
Shane, AFAIK you were riding Nero rollers with front/back movement. Main difference to mp1 is side movement, on rollers totaly natural. Imvho Nero gives best inodoor ride feel. What is your opinion?
They're different beasts. The forward/back on rollers is good.. but you're still on rollers... which isn't all that good (or suitable) for most indoor training. *Training as in ALL range of efforts.
I wonder if the high price means they will combo it for like $1500usd to seem like a great deal. I'll should upgrade my old kickr soon so would consider if they had a h3 rocker plate combo. Kinda unrelated, but I've never used a front wheel riser what is the advantage of one?
I's a hoverboard for the lama lab LOL :) great video shane are you usually climbing at a cadence of 55? or just to demonstrate the movement? looks like a really good product and I want it but the price... and after finishing the video , better just save and buy a TACX MAGNUM
Hi Shane, I got mine today - The instructions are unclear regarding the rubber pads on the L / R side roller, do those rubber pads under the rollers come out? Thanks :)
1:15 oddly that cut just reminded me of when George Clooney showed Frances McDormand what was in his basement in Burn After Reading. Oh god it makes the following blurb so much more awkward/hilarious
This looks really good - but how much?! 🤯 This can’t be more than £100 of materials. As a cyclist we’re all very used to spending excessive amounts on bikes, kit, trainer etc, but this is just insane money. I would consider it at £1000 if it included the turbo!
Shane Miller - GPLama I’m a bit flabbergasted by that price. £150 more than their flagship trainer 🤷🏻♂️ Just can’t see how asking more than £400 absolutely maximum is anywhere near reasonable
Yes, Its a lot of money. Just some consideration. This product has gone through a tough road at Saris. Its an innovative idea that has made its way through tons of testing and prototypes to get to the point its at now. Frankly it has a lot more than £100 of material in it along with trying super hard to make this in the States in Madison, WI. We understand its expensive and not achievable for a lot of people and we are working on that, but we were confronted with the challenge of not selling it at all, or risk selling it without proven tested parts that would fail over a short time. Instead we released the product out in the market for what it actually cost to make a product of this caliber, in the US, with these materials and risk the price being high. This is a new product where we didn't want to settle on product reliability or quality, and it ends up to be high priced. It will for sure come down in the price, but we reached a point the the process where we are happy with what we have accomplished and ready for people to start enjoying it. I encourage you to ride it and see what you think? Not saying you will change your mind on the price, but you might have more respect for what went in to making it.
Erik Eagleman I’m glad it’s come to market, looks like a fun and genuinely beneficial addition to indoor training. Hopefully the price can come down in time and with competition, but I wish Saris luck with it, deserves to succeed
I've very willingly spent a bunch on bike stuff like power meters, Kickr, dedicated room, computer, big screen TV etc etc for indoor training.... but I would not be willing to fork out $1200 for such an item. I can't imagine they will sell many of these.... given the price.
Where do you order them from? A Goggle search brings up Amazon but they don't send to Australia. An enquiry to an online Australian site got naught too
Cool product and excellently executed. However ridiculous pricing will leave it accessible to only the few-a criticism that can be levelled at a lot of things indoor bike trainer related.
Seems like a logical progression for smartbikes,. At some point it doesn’t seem worth it to keep adding thousands of dollars of accessories like a KICKR Climb and a rocker plate on top of a smart trainer when it can all be integrated for about the same final price or cheaper without the setup woes.
Another great review, if only the makers of of “things” would check with you first they would find how to make”thinks” that work in the real world that actually work.👍👍👍
Great review and agree totally about the price Have you tried it with the elite steer g block I went for the elite nero rollers which were cheaper so after seeing this were a bargain
Be interesting to know how rocker plates affect muscle activity. Seen a few studies that show indoor riding doesn't work the hamstrings as much (possibly due to lack of lateral movements and interaction between glute med and hamstring muscles). From personal experience after a long period off indoor riding switching to outdoors, I experience discomfort in the hamstrings on the road
How about a ball joint positioned directly below the axle-line, and dampers under each side leg of the trainer... this should allow a little twisting (missing from all these systems I have seen) and rocking action.
I don't think a steering block could make it more natural. You would probably need something like it also for the trainer itself, but with opposite direction of the steer. And that would require either the front or the rear plate to have dome sort of forward and backward motion to have the same distance between axles at all times.
The owner of that company took it upon himself to troll me online a while back. I’ll await Larry’s explanation and/or apology first before deciding to give his products any of my time.
You have to disassemble the whole setup every 30 hours for maintenance?! For that price they should send someone round every week to make sure it’s all hunky dorey...
Shane Miller - GPLama What attention do the areas highlighted by the yellow arrows on the bottom require then? I assumed it would be lubrication or something...
Rich McDonough it’s a silicon grease pad that comes with it. You flip it on it’s side (with the trainer strapped in even) and just run the pad over the contact points. It takes 5 minutes to do.
Would you say that this would remove stress that would be placed on a bike locked in on a static trainer on its own. Would it be less likely to damage a bike using this?

One problem. Outside people rock something that weights some 8kg beneath us. In a trainer we are trying to leverage something that weights around 20kg. Completely different beast. As for the competition, I can wahoo incorporating movement on their kickr bike platform. It's hard for a company to make a product that will accommodate all different trainer out there. But if wahoo makes something solely focused on mimicking movement in their own bike then you have the final closing of the product. Movement everywhere.
Would be cool to see the neo bike or the kickr bike used on it...Did this remind anyone else of George Clooney’s character’s homemade contraption in Burn After Reading 😂😂😂🙈
I use the SBR ROCKR with a Kickr Climb and it is fantastic. The amount of tilt and the ease of the tilting is adjustable. I do not think I could back to a stationary set up. The plate is around $500 USD
That's the recommendation. It says "annually" as a minimum... but that'd be highly dependent on usage. And the environment it's used in. I'd scanned over a number of reviews prior to unboxing the MP1 and didn't recall seeing this mentioned... so it was a surprise to me too.
You can get the same wiggle with the LeMond - just wind one of the feet up bahahahhahaa. Ahem. Fore/aft movement looks similar movement to the e-motion rollers I used to train on. Maintenance every week or two (30 hours) sounds onerous!? T-bolt solution is great vs having to reach under to do a normal bolt up. $2k is painful. I'd rather buy half of one of those sexy SRM PMs...
2000 Aud is a lot of coin i could buy a lot of beer and rock on my trainer. I've gone the full opposite by extending the arms on my fixed trainer and dyna bolting one arm to the floor. I like to climb in a more rigid fashion obviously 😃I'm glad that call this a Saris imagine if they dropped the 'i' right now.
It's a real shame that you can't control resistance. That's a massive fail, especially at that price point, and something that the DIY projects which use inner tubes can do very well. Also worth noting that you can't use it with a Kickr Climb (per Saris).
At 1199 you can buy Inside Ride's eMotion rollers. This is way over priced and does not appear to offer the same great road feel as the eMotion rollers.
Thinking the same thing as everyone else - not spending that kinda money - just as much as my kicker....399-549 us I think is a much better price point
There’s a hole in the Aussie market for a cost-friendly rocker right now... with postage the overseas complete versions don’t pass the “missus” test. Even though I’ve been using the “if we want to have kids I need this” line! 🍆🚫😂

The more reviews I see on different trainers the more I am glad I bought the Tacx Neo 1
The Neo was well ahead of the times.
I'm happy I haven't purchased one yet and did my research. Neo 2 will be on its way shortly now.
I didn't realize the Neo had some sideways play
I just bought a Saris H3 trainer for $898 - there's no way I'd pay $1,200 for this.....it is grossly overpriced. For $500, I'd buy one.

It's likely Saris took out a ton of patents on this design.... so don't hold your breath.
what you feel when you get out of the saddle, is the fly wheel of the trainer. it generates inertia and acts as a kind of gyroscope.

Do you think this device can support Stagesbike SB20 or Wahoo wahoo kickr bike.
Can it make it adaptable and interesting?
It’d be like putting roller skates on an elephant. Sure it’ll move.... but it won’t be pretty or natural.

Maybe… Unlikely to be honest. Maybe it’ll add more stress on the bike due to the increased angles force can be applied.

Surely if we had enough photos handy people could duplicate this and maybe add some more features with hardware available at Bunnings...
And get a few snags on the way out. Win win!

Beautiful Bike!!!
Wow, just wow! I had no idea whatsoever. This puts roadies on a whole new level :D
@13:19: where can I find more information about the shown front steerer block?
Right here when I publish the video I'm working on. Stay tuned!
No way I’d spend that. Did this myself with inflatable seat cushions on amazon for 9 dollars. Put one under each ground contact point.
Joe Weiner, I'd like to see a photo of what you did.
Update to the Hunt wheels?
I noticed there website says it's not compatible with the Kickr Bike.
I'd rather buy half of one of those sexy SRM PMs...
hahahaha! Love your work AK!
Is it kicker bike compatible?
If you’re game enough, I guess so. Don’t expect it to move like a bike outside though... that’s a lot of weight to be swinging around on the MP1.
@@gplama Thanks Shane
2000 Aud is a lot of coin i could buy a lot of beer and rock on my trainer.
I've gone the full opposite by extending the arms on my fixed trainer and dyna bolting one arm to the floor. I like to climb in a more rigid fashion obviously 😃I'm glad that call this a Saris imagine if they dropped the 'i' right now.
It's a real shame that you can't control resistance. That's a massive fail, especially at that price point, and something that the DIY projects which use inner tubes can do very well. Also worth noting that you can't use it with a Kickr Climb (per Saris).
Box won't fit in a CT200h, but will fit in a Subaru Outback
It certainly looks nice. But I was thinking it would be about ~300 dollars. Too bad!
At 1199 you can buy Inside Ride's eMotion rollers. This is way over priced and does not appear to offer the same great road feel as the eMotion rollers.
Why not use rollers instead?
Rollers aren't the same as a direct drive interactive smart trainer. They're cycling, sure... but different.
Sorry, i meant to send this reply on another video...

Is there a better chance that rollers would produce close to outdoor wattage than direct mount trainers on sprints?
@@artalviar4050 No. Rollers are VERY unstable in sprints which means you can't generate the same peak power.
does it work with the Climb?
Sure
@@gplama I heard people say it dosent work well with as it feel very loose and is too narrow for platform is this true?
This is worth about £300 max
I feel 499 would be expensive but kinda what I would expect but 1199 is way too much not even going to consider this now
What about insideride rocker??
If I can get access to one, I’ll put it to the test. 👍🏼
Thinking the same thing as everyone else - not spending that kinda money - just as much as my kicker....399-549 us I think is a much better price point
Zwift Surfing? Zwift Skateboarding? Remember, you heard it here first. 😜

But is there anyone selling these in Australia? :(
Nope. That's part of the international distribution they'll need to work on..... or we'll likely get slugged import duty.
There’s a hole in the Aussie market for a cost-friendly rocker right now... with postage the overseas complete versions don’t pass the “missus” test. Even though I’ve been using the “if we want to have kids I need this” line! 🍆🚫😂
At a £grand they can rock off.
I wonder what happens if you are susceptible to motion sickness 😄
Really needs a flat floor. Uneven wooden floors need not apply.
It barely moves side to side what the heck..
