In a small English village during a cold period, the townsfolk are curiously ambivalent about the murder of a vindictive woman. Superintendent Baxter is perplexed by the community's bizarrely joyous reaction to the gruesome crime. First aired on December 18, 1976, on BBC Radio 4's Saturday Night Theatre, this 90-minute play is directed by Alfred Bradley and features a rich cast of characters.

Cast and production all exemplary. A gem of its kind.
These plays are great bexause they deal with universal themes. Lucky are those who live in an area where these plays are presented on stage.

This was beautifully done. It is a slow, quiet burn, with enough little tid bits dropped along the lane, to lead you to the killer... if you can put the jigsaw puzzle together, upside down, with the picture not showing.
I knew one of those tidbits was important-the moment I heard it; however, I lost track of it, just as the author lead us in a different direction.
I couldn't put the puzzle together upside down.

In my head cannon, the authorities had come to arrest the police officer, priest and woman.
The nasty woman would've no doubt put a contingency plan that, in the case of any suspicious death, the secrets of her victims would be sent to the authorities.
The priest: damn that woman.
Police officer: she won, he said chuckling, she won.
The woman: we are ready, sir.
