So, a little bit of context and how we swifties usually interpret this video. This is the first song on reputation, the album she wrote after the whole Kim/Kanye drama. The song is about Joe Alwyn, her boyfriend at the time, and how she felt insecure her bad reputation would bring problems to the relationship. "Touch me and you'll never be alone", cause he would be followed by paparazzi everywhere, for example. In the video, we see two Taylors. The one in black is her reputation, and the one trapped in the glass cage is the real Taylor. Taylor felt trapped by the image everyone had about her, and this album is her way to tell her side of the story and take back the narrative. If you remember, Kim called her a snake during the Kanye drama, that's why the snake. You can see that, following the lyrics, but in another context, the real Taylor screams JAILER, and "bad" Taylor points to herself when she sings "Taylor". Also, the real one tries to break the glass cage a bunch of times, but only gets to do it with HER VOICE. In the end, real Taylor is free, but she knows that they'll keep burning all the witches (even if you aren't one).
So there's actually a fan theory about this music video that you can Google to get the full story, but the idea is that there isn't a "bad" Taylor or a "real" Taylor, but rather a rebirth. The dark Taylor is the one who has been through everything and survived so she is training this next version of Taylor. It's not a battle of good and evil. It's training someone to be strong. Notice that the old Taylor is at peace when she is destroyed. This wasn't a fight. But then the new Taylor realizes that the only way she can exist is to say goodbye to the old Taylor. When her training is done, the glass case is broken.
I always thought of this video as a prequel to the Look What You Made Me Do video. The dark Taylor is the Taylor we knew until then (the old Taylor, who dies here) and the one who is locked up is an evolution (the one who sings in Look What You Made Me Do where in a certain way she is saying: “look what you made me you made me do it, you forced me to reinvent myself, to kill my old self and to come back stronger and willing to fight). This new Taylor is the product of everything she had to experience in the previous years, the betrayals, the lies, the persecution and the permanent scrutiny. And that's why she knows how to do everything the previous version of her does but she also comes with all those weapons built into the suit. Both are machines, both are ways of presenting herself in front of the public, both are artistic brands. And that's not bad. It's as if she were saying that there was always something of an imposition, but that was the way she liked and others forced her to change. I love that about the entire Reputation narrative. It is a journey of conversion and learning to defend oneself by knowing one's mistakes and virtues. And what Reputation means, which at the end of the day is an image that never ends up being (or not being) the real person. And I most like that the lyrics are about the person she is in love with and who is accompanying her despite everything. Having said all that, I love this fan theory you talk about, it's a super interesting way to look at it too.
There were also a whole bunch of Chinese in the first part of this mv. 蛇年means the year of snake, cause she was born in 1989, and according to the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, 1989 was exactly the year of snake. 未来(Future) and 艾迪 (Ed Sheeran) were the two artists featuring End Game on this album. 约瑟夫(Joseph) was the director of this mv. 名誉(reputation) was the title of this album. 十三(thirteen) was her lucky number. And there were many other characters such as 永(forever), 爱(love), 蛇(snake) flashed pretty quickly. Hoping this will be helpful. Looking forward to an extended version! ❤
Love your videos! “They’re burning all the witches” is a line in I Did Something Bad, which is another song off of her Reputation album. The whole line is “they’re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one, so light me up” 🔥
Clearly a reference to the Salem witch-hunts which is a dark stain on pioneer settlement of east coast America. The idea that any intelligent autonomous woman who is not being controlled by anyone has to be a witch and therefore to be burned, is still strong in the subconscious and fully expressed in present day times. She's a lightning-rod for controversy and hatred, but my God does she channel it and sort them out well! I have to say I'm very late to the Taylor Swift party I'm more interested in her creative process and her energy than just listening to an album on its own. This is a great introduction, been watching your other videos they're excellent. I've also watched interviews and documentaries so I get a sense of who she is. She is impressive as a person for her survival skills and also her ability to transform. Unapologetic.
Ready for it is the song and mv that you respect.... There's no way to not like them. Best song, best comeback, best opening of the best concert, best everything...
An extended version of this video would be so cool. I love how you pointed out the King of My Heart reference without (I think) even recognizing it. I really enjoy you're videos.
I love the line 'I know I'm gonna be with you so I'll take my time.' That's such a power move to tell someone that you wanna take it slow because you know you are gonna be together. Despite the reputation being 'tainted', I feel like this song is full of confidence.
It looks like you haven't reacted to "I Can See You" and you've GOT TO, it's such a good MV. The storytelling is so cool and there's a ton of easter eggs! Its one of my top 5 favorite Taylor swift music videos, along with Out of the Woods, Wildest dreams, Ready for It? And Me! It's got a pretty star-studded cast, too.
"They're burning all the witches" is a line from another song off Reputation, "I Did Something Bad". No music video unfortunately but a fantastic song to listen to and add to your playlist! (check out her live AMA or rep tour video just for fun).
There are soooo many easter eggs in this video. The 89 and 91 refer to the years Taylor and her then-boyfriend, Joe Alwyn were born. Ready for It was the second single from reputation and came out before the album did so many easter eggs in here refer to other songs on the album. The heart with the crown is for King of My Heart and on the stairs it says "they're burning all the witches" which is a lyric from I Did Something Bad, both were songs to come on rep!
You’re definitely a Swiftie. You probably have been since your very first TS reaction video. Welcome to the family! We love hearing your insightful comments about the technical aspects of her videos. ❤ P.S. love the commercial!
the whole album of reputation is basically built on the same theme of dealing with her Reputation, haha get it ? This album explains her journey throughout her career about how she always had to like fight for her reputation and be on the good side of everyone. The sound of the album is the "darkest" we are ever heard from her but kind of chills down as we move on with the album. The first half can be represented as her saying ' yes this is me, my reputation, and yall wanna call me a snake and slut shame me ?? fine IDGAF, but then as we move on she explains her vulnerable side more, she tell us about her relationship, how he treated her right also explained the drama in TRACK 13, the drama being when K*m Ka*****ian illegaly recorded a phone call between her and Ka*ye. She basically went into hiding for like A year and Half because of all the media and public backlash, and after her hiatus came back stronger with LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO. SO again this is basically what her reputation was at that time, and making just fun pop songs wouldn't have cut it, SO SHE CAME BACK, AND HIT HAAAARRRDDD
I love the fact that you understand so many references now! You jammimg out to the songs makes the videos even more fun and OF COURSE we're up for an extended version! I could honestly listen to you talk about all this stuff for HOURS
You picked up on things i hadn't considered!!! The references to the Blank Space horse and the way she hangs in Out of the Woods...that's brilliant...and i doubt it was coincidental coming from taylor. Also, WOW! What a neat way to relate the commercial to the video! So fun and creative...I think you would make a great Swiftie! We love entering Taylor's world bc all of her easter eggs, visuals, lyrics etc., make us think, feel, and then share experiences in synergistic ways we never dreamed of❤
Does this editor recognize enough of her music to know that Taylor samples herself? I can’t tell if I’m seeing him just figure that out when he hears “in the middle of the night…” or if he’s reacting to something else. I’m new here. But seems like this guy will be fun to watch experience her and breakdown even more of the videos for us. Knowing that Taylor is breaking into film making is bringing so many interesting new listeners to the family!!! I love seeing industry pros like this become entranced with her, to their bewilderment 😂
Taylor was actually courting/dating Joe Alwyn during reputation. So back then she was saying Joe was far better than any of her exes. So at the time she wasn't talking about an ex. But at this point now, he is an ex
I am so ready for an extended version of this reaction ❤ bring it on!! Also I looooved your commerical and how you integrate it with the music video ❤😂 10/10 please never stop!!!
this song was one of the first singles to be released after her disappearance from the public eye and it was honestly such a good way to start this album because it showed aspects of the love side of the album and also the revenge side. she also said “baby let the games begin” as a way to show that she doesn’t give two f’s abt what people think of her now and if they want to make her the villain, they can do that.
Love your Taylor reactions!! 🫶🏻 You are really a genius for noticing so many things in the videos! And of course we love to jam with you to the songs 😂 And YES to the extended version!
You should do an extended version combined with some behind-the-scenes, I’m sure there’s a bit around for this video! Loved your reaction (as always) but when you stop reacting and full on jam was brilliant. Also, I love that you started the video with “yes I am ready for this” and end with “I was NOT ready for that!” 🤣
I feel like the meeting between Taylor and the director went something like this… So I wrote a song about my new boyfriend because I love him so much but I’m worried about the world knowing about us. It’s totally hip hop/EDM though so I want the video to look like a cyber punk dystopia where my public self, whom everyone thinks is a villian, is being defeated by my soft inner self, who is also a badass warrior, but is released from her glass cage into the light. K?
The location IS real. When I first saw the video it looked like an abandoned mall. I watch a lot of videos of dead or abandoned malls and it screamed abandoned to me. I remember a mall that was a little like this in California and when I dig a little deeper, it's the old Hawthorne Plaza.
YES to the extended version of this! There' was also a BTS for this, if I'm not mistaken. I remember her walking around the set in a beige suit in it (it wasn't green).
this album was her first embrace of dark electro pop and it was such a good fit for the intent of this album. reputation was one of, if not, the most defining era of her career. she went into hiding for a whole year after the world turned against her and returned with this new version of herself that was a slap in the face to everyone.
I think it’s one of her best eras 🩷🩷 maybe I’m biased because I was going through puberty when it came out ❤️🔥❤️🔥 but it’s fire 💯💯 and she is spitting facts and burning the house down
Oh, I've been waiting for this one! I knew the ...Ready For It video would blow your mind, because it blew mine when I first saw it. It's been my favourite music video since its release, years before I got into the rest of her music. When I saw your reaction to The Man, I was hoping you would react to this one :)
"They're burning all the witches." is a line from a song I did something bad. :D And it is as awesome as this one. But sadly, it didn't get its own music video. :D
Yes, you point out so many things I haven't noticed! Please do an extended reaction! This video reinforces my belief that she is a musical, business + video prodigy!
Also, ready for it is about how MEDIA encaged her true self. The ROBOT is the one who always control and decide. The robot who have the mentality to limit show her INNER self. Finally, when she got the time to face that robot self again she made sure that the her robot/fake self is totally destroyed along. Now SHE'S OUT OF THE BOX, FREE and POWERFUL. That's really a COMEBACK fit for the first track of the *reputation* album.
The escalator/ staircase is located in an abandoned mall. They use it in a bunch of SciFi movies. It is on the lowest/ storage level of Westworld, too. It would not surprise me that a lot of the locations in this MV were actually real and not green screen.
also to add to the symbolism, as you can observe during the beginning of the song, taylor is standing infront of a door and at the end, the other taylor is zapping all the guards that hooded taylor walk through which could be her coming out of hiding after the whole kim kanye drama. this could also be tied to the series of actions the white robot taylor did while in "glass" prison, which is first.) she fought back and denied, which obviously didnt work. second.) there were talks about her management talking to the kardashians management for some sort of "peace talks" hence the white horse and 3.) she tried to ignore it and get distracted by other things - the floating around and looking at something shiny. all of which, did not release her from her glass house. what release her is the "thunder", thats inside her. and thats all hooded taylor wanted from her as like wanting to make sure she is ready to "ascend" while leaving a "very dark place" like a rented home in a foreign country. the end thank you for coming to my ted talk
I always read this as her resisting her own darker, but deeper and wiser power....using the BigMachine against herself but since she is in a glass box, it just comes back to her....only when she connects to herself as her own Muse and source of power does she tap into her voice that frees her
You really are a proper Swiftie now, look at you pausing to see all the easter eggs! Joe Alwyn, her boyfriend at the time, was indeed born in 1991. The “they’re burning all the witches” is a quote from her song I Did Something Bad, also in Reputation, (complete quote: “they’re burning all the witches, even if you ain’t one”). In the beginning there’s also a graffiti of 13, her favourite number which is present in most videos I thing. I actually don’t know what the 21 for the keycode means, any Swifties know? Also, I see that Moon Knight phone cover!!! I love Moon Knight, clearly you have great taste haha.
yes to the extended version!! this is my favourite song and my favourite music video of taylor swift and i've been so excited waiting for you to break it down! i always love your insights. i've watched this mv maybe like a hundred times before this and you still manage to point out things i haven't noticed and i just love getting a technical explanation of how things are done. you get so deep already, its crazy to think that you can go even deeper with the technical stuff and i would sooo love to see it!! so i vote yes!
Another Interpretation that I read and was kind approved by a like by Taylor somewhere: Kim/Kanye/Snake drama - Blabla. So Taylor invented herself new in this album. And in this video we see the old Taylor waking up her future one, training her or trying different versions of her till she finds one, that will be strong enough for this cruel world outside. And the she lets the new version out and the old one dies willingly and happily, knowing, the new, stronger one will continue in her place. Don't know, if thats really true, but to me it makes sense. And yes, best video of all time, I would love a whole movie of this and for you to do an extended version. 😉❤️
This was brilliant. Loved how you loved it. "They're burning all the witches even if you aren't one" - I did something bad. Next assignment. ;) Thanks for all these!
I love how you actually put effort into your sponsor instead of just reading everything lol ur the only few people who I won't skip their ads haha and ur content is high quality as always!! love it sm xoxo
I am so excited that you have become a Swiftie! Watching your progression happen is so cool! This video has so much meaning it's unbelievable! It's really fun watching you get excited!
Swifties and Josh! OMG! I am loving these vids. I am a new Swiftie. My son has been a huge TS fan for a nimber of years. I recently started listening to her music and Ellen D interviews, etc. I wanted to know what kind of a role model TS is for my son. She is an awesome role model. Love her and her music. What is lovely about your videos, Josh, is that we are both seeing them for the first time asking the same questions. We have all these amazing Swifties giving us the TS rapid class as we attempt to catch up! Thank you so much for the video breakdown and Swifties, thank YOU for the back stories! LOVE LOVE LOVE it ALL!
"It's like now everything I say is Taylor Swift related, how does that happen?" Welcome to our daily lives haha. And there is behind the scenes! the og by Taylor got taken down I guess for some reason, but Talreputation posted a video with most of the stuff. It is the first song we ever heard about Joe Alwyn, but at the timehe's not ex lover...yet, but you were right, 89 and 91 represent their birth years. In the music video there are easter eggs for songs from the album, like eg at the wall there is in the beginning a heart with a crown which represents song King Of My Heart, the lyric "they're burning all the witches" from I Did Something Bad, there are some other less visible writings like "all eyes on us" from so It Goes, "UR gorgeous" from Gorgous, "this is enough" from King Of My Heart and "I loved you in secret" from Dancing With Our Hands Tied. also I am pretty sure that those Chinese writings mean something, I think one of them is literally like "Joseph". She also pushes 2 and 1 on the code buttons, Joe's birthday is Feb 21. All the lightnings might be a nod to her collab with ex Calvin Harris on This Is What You Came For for Rihanna, which she wrote under a pseudonym and when he was asked about eve writing with her while literally promoting the song he said something like "no, I can't see it". The white horse kinda calls back to White Horse and Blank Space, not really sure why, but Taylor likes horses so, maybe that's just that. To that bodysuit, yeah I suspect she wore a greenscreen body suit for some of the shots, but she really did wear a beige bodysuit, if you google "ready for it bts", you will see pictures of it. Yeah she was a robot too, you can see it right in the beginning when her eyes glitch with that blue colour, you were even talking about haha.
wasn't a green suit. a picture was posted of her with this cream colored suit on as everyone was saying she was naked, so she posted about it. It was filmed in an abandoned mall in CA. alot of the things in the video are "easter eggs" "they're burning all the witches" is a line in her song "I did something bad"
If you think this is different from any thing you've ever hear from her, look up "End Game", "Thug Story" and "Vigilante Sh*t" (live performance I think from Eras). Woman loves what she does and loves to play, and I enjoy every second of it
Still geeking out as if many of us haven’t seen the video a hundred times. Love how you add your perspective and insight so we can learn how other forms of art get created.
She was talking about a current lover, not an ex lover. The visuals are so compelling it's understandable that you missed the lyrics, but the meaning of the song is clear if you listen again. "I see how this is gonna go, touch me and you'll never be alone, Island Breeze and the lights down low...no one has to know. In the middle of the night, in my dreams, you should see the things we do, baby." Also, "He can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor," referring to Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, but she's Elizabeth Taylor in this scenario.
Omg thank you so much for the interpretation! That makes so much sense!
@@brittanyg6796 This is what I’ve always understood the MV to be about!

I'm curious how many people got the line "You can be my jailor. Burton to this Taylor." Although totally appropriate for her relationship at the time.

You are really a genius for noticing so many things in the videos! And of course we love to jam with you to the songs 😂
And YES to the extended version!
Totally agree!!
The heart with a crown is for king of my heart ❤ another song on the album
yeah, haha, I can literally see that
That sums it up perfectly 😂
Love an extended version!
It is definitely such a great song and video and you were indeed not ready for it.... to end.
The location IS real. When I first saw the video it looked like an abandoned mall. I watch a lot of videos of dead or abandoned malls and it screamed abandoned to me. I remember a mall that was a little like this in California and when I dig a little deeper, it's the old Hawthorne Plaza.
Extended version please!
I think it’s one of her best eras 🩷🩷 maybe I’m biased because I was going through puberty when it came out ❤️🔥❤️🔥 but it’s fire 💯💯 and she is spitting facts and burning the house down
The middlest of fingers!
Especially great since the whole pile of bullshit played on their sense of her being sweet and weak
I would love if you did an extended version. This music video is so cool
Oh, I've been waiting for this one! I knew the ...Ready For It video would blow your mind, because it blew mine when I first saw it. It's been my favourite music video since its release, years before I got into the rest of her music.
When I saw your reaction to The Man, I was hoping you would react to this one :)
dude you deserved at least 100k subscribers for the quality of ur contents
Thank you so much! I appreciate that! Maybe one day!
"They're burning all the witches." is a line from a song I did something bad. :D And it is as awesome as this one. But sadly, it didn't get its own music video. :D
**clicks on video**
**sees that it's 24 minutes**
ooh boy we're in for a treat 😅
"I've tried graffiti in the past -... Wait, no, I haven't. That's illegal. I dreamed about it" 😂😂 lol same. Love your reactions!
Heart with crown…king of my heart
I always read this as her resisting her own darker, but deeper and wiser power....using the BigMachine against herself but since she is in a glass box, it just comes back to her....only when she connects to herself as her own Muse and source of power does she tap into her voice that frees her
I have watched this guy slowly turn into a swifty and I love it.
Yes extended reaction please! Love your reaction to this!
this was so much fun! i would recommend you to watch her "delicate" music video or the "i bet you think about me", theyre definetely so much fun
21 was Joe's birthday
yes to the extended version!! this is my favourite song and my favourite music video of taylor swift and i've been so excited waiting for you to break it down! i always love your insights. i've watched this mv maybe like a hundred times before this and you still manage to point out things i haven't noticed and i just love getting a technical explanation of how things are done. you get so deep already, its crazy to think that you can go even deeper with the technical stuff and i would sooo love to see it!! so i vote yes!
Yeeeees!!!🎉🎉 to the extended version!!! 🎉🎉 Please!!!
I'm really enjoying your content. It's so interesting to see Taylor's music videos analyzed from an editing perspective.
The heart with crown was a reference to her song on the same album as this ready for it, it's called king of my heart
Another Interpretation that I read and was kind approved by a like by Taylor somewhere:
Kim/Kanye/Snake drama - Blabla.
I loved seeing your excitement about this song and appreciate the skills and techniques used to create the video. Extended version, please.
I love that you love this!!! Reputation has so many good songs and videos!!
Another yes to the extended version!
This was brilliant. Loved how you loved it. "They're burning all the witches even if you aren't one" - I did something bad. Next assignment. ;) Thanks for all these!
I love how you actually put effort into your sponsor instead of just reading everything lol
ur the only few people who I won't skip their ads haha
and ur content is high quality as always!! love it sm xoxo
heart with a crown is" king of my heart " a song on reputation
Best line ever “Am I a swiftie” 🖤
The Crown with the Heart is a reference to her song King of my Heart, also from Reputation ☺️
After all this time I just barely noticed the crown over the heart for king of my heart oh my goodness!
Amazing reaction and totally agree this video and Look What You Made Me do are incredible. Would LOVE and in depth breakdown of this video 🙏
Great reaction! Yes, you are definitely a swiftness!
Not only one of her best songs and videos, but one of my favorite music videos ever. 👏🏻
“Am I a Swifty? 🤔” had me laughing so hard lol
I can’t believe I’ve never actually seen this video 😧
Reputation Era is that girl!!!
your commercial was lit and so was your acting. loved that😂
Lol- thank you so much!
I was soooooo ready for this mv.
YAY YOU FINALLY REACTED TO THIS SONGGGGGGG (the numbers were backwards "1989")
You need to listen to Reputation and then watch the reputation tour movie…epic!
I am so excited that you have become a Swiftie! Watching your progression happen is so cool! This video has so much meaning it's unbelievable! It's really fun watching you get excited!
YES to the extended version
a certain yogurt boy was born 1991, that's why she put 91 after 89 (1989 - her birth year)
Swifties and Josh!
5:23 KING OF MY HEART?? THAT ROBOT WAS JOE???!!
My theory for the 89 and 91 is because if u rearrange it, it is 1989, the year she was born and one of her most popular albums...
I would watch a 2 hour video in this video ❤
EXTENDED VERSION!!!
I absolutely loved seeing you get lost in the music and dancing!!! This song is definitely a JAM! Thank you for another great video! 🙏❤️☮️
it's the dancing for me
wasn't a green suit. a picture was posted of her with this cream colored suit on as everyone was saying she was naked, so she posted about it. It was filmed in an abandoned mall in CA. alot of the things in the video are "easter eggs" "they're burning all the witches" is a line in her song "I did something bad"
It was filmed in an abandoned mall
If you think this is different from any thing you've ever hear from her, look up "End Game", "Thug Story" and "Vigilante Sh*t" (live performance I think from Eras). Woman loves what she does and loves to play, and I enjoy every second of it
Dude, I think I became a Swiftie myself within the past month. No shame. This woman is on FIRE!
3:19 91 stands for Joe’s bday year-good job 😊
This is why I love Reputation so much!!!!
“I love how there’s like, a heart with a crown up there.”
All of us immediately singing:
KING OF MY HEART, BODY AND SOUL!
Still geeking out as if many of us haven’t seen the video a hundred times. Love how you add your perspective and insight so we can learn how other forms of art get created.
"They're burnig all the witches" is a lyric form her another reputation song called "I did something bad"
I love keep bumping into these videos...are you a Swiftie? Short answer is YES 😊 Welcome to the joy of being proud of how talented this woman is
Please please please do an extended version!!!!
Extended version please 😌🥳
Yes, Swift can write at the level of an O. Henry short story with subtle twists that make total sense.
