@@a.m2773 It would depend on the situation. Realistically if someone wants to leave a relationship because they were unhappy with something then it is up to the leaver to decide whether they come back. The only move that the other person has made is accepting that the leaver wasn't happy and thus not forcing them to stay. The saying i quoted doesn't apply to "happy" relationships where both parties are comfortable and want to stay together, unless there is an opposing force there is no need to "set it free". It would only apply to situations of hesitation and resistance. If you are chasing someone that doesn't want to be with you but you have made it clear that you are interested in them then this mentality would apply to that situation. This is mostly related to situations where a relationship is established, both parties are invested and have made it known that they are interested. If it were two people who haven't made it clear to the other person that they are interested then this does not apply. If it were a situation in which one person was fully invested and the other was unsure and decided to leave without coming back later then there is no point dwelling on them. If the person that leaves wanted to be there they would've made it work or at least came back after realising that they actually really wanted to be with the person they left, that is unless there was something out of their control preventing them from returning. The quote is less about claiming someone and more about accepting another persons decision because you can't change how they feel about you. This does not apply to a situation where both parties mutually decide to go their seperate ways, in that case one of the people would have to pose the question to the other allowing them to make the decision to stay or leave. In summary, It should sound more like "If you love someone (and they want to leave but you don't) let them go, if they comes back they always loved you and if they don't they never truly did to begin with or they no longer love you the way they did before so its best to move on."

I actually said the very same thing to someone recently, and I never watched the movie. Man it sucked. Still sucks. But it's true. If you love someone so much you just cannot stand in their way to happiness.
"Love requires sacrifice......always" "I still wrote Ruth letters even if I saw her everyday" "I love you so much I just want you to be happy. Even if that happiness no longer includes me" Loooove these lines sooooooo much 💜
I really thought he's gonna convince her to stay by reasoning out their love for each other once upon a time, but when he said that he thought she should go, I just broke down. He said his love wasn't the same as before. Because if it was before, he will do anything to have her in his life, but at that moment, his love wanted her happiness even if it means not getting to have her in his life anymore. I just saw this movie a while ago, and now I can't stop thinking about this.
Honestly I think Ira and Ruth's backstory has helped shape the lives of Luke and Sophia who had such different backgrounds and it was so interesting to learn how love can be special when its with the right person.
the story of Ira and Ruth is what made this movie great , you can feel the chemistry and love in this relationship.. i honestly didn't care that much about Luke and Sophia
The movie really should have just been about these two. Luke and Sophia really ruined and wasted so much screen time. A slutty, fun loving cowboy and a studious, serious girl. I mean how much more played out can you get, maybe if they reversed roles but even then, Ira and Ruth would have slain them in depth, chemistry, romance and in a LASTING love story.🤔
I prayed for you today, like I do everyday. I pray for your safety going to and from work. I pray for you to have a peaceful mind through out the day. I just want you to be happy and be at your happiest like a kid who scored a bunch of candy on Halloween night.Because that's what you deserve. No more stress and hurt. I love you so much that I want you to be happy even if that happiness doesn't include me in your life. I love you.
It’s so neat how both Jack and Oona are descendants of acting royalty. They had such amazing chemistry and any time I watch this movie I just fast forward to their parts.
The only saving graces in this movie of wasted potential. Ira and Ruth’s storyline was so much more emotional and compelling and the chemistry between the two actors was palpable and believable. I’m not dissing Scott and Brit, but they are inferior actors compared to Jack and Oona. And the icing on the cake: Oona (Ruth) is the granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin and Jack (Ira) is the grandson of John Huston. Two descendants of Hollywood royalty. It only makes it even better that they’re as talented as they are.
@@higeorge4060 It is a thing; but it has nothing to do with my opinions. Who they’re related to is simply an interesting fact. Scott Eastwood is the son of Clint Eastwood, and I don’t consider his parentage a factor in wether or not I think he’s talented.
Ok first off the whole point of this movie was for Sophia and Luke to learn that if you want something then you really do have to work at it yes ira and Ruth's back story is better than the main plot but without the main plot and Luke and Sophia finding ira it all makes the story tie in together well every single aspect of it
"And somehow you chose me" Seriously, Jack Huston? The moment I saw only the half of your face in Boardwalk Empire I knew right away you are handsome as hell.
I was watching this movie on screen when it came out, along with me was my ex girlfriend, mother of kids...I wish she can come back and be the person she was back then...I would still accept her with open arms...sad reality is that will never happen
I love you for who you are, more than ever. We’ve parted once, a long absence and yet when we came together our hearts touched and although it had trouble understanding each other brought by differences, it always felt home to each other. Everyday wakes me up to the beauty we had and have in us.
I don't know the movie. I don't know the story. but I don't know why my heart drastically wrings when I watch this. I really really really feel the guy. I love her so much I just want her to be the happiest girl. I'm wiling to let her go just to make her happy. because I know I'm not the whose gonna make her happy. I know I'm just her bestfriend, nothing more. I love her. she doesn't love me. so I'm willing to make her happy even though it kills me. -Going Grade 11 student from from san pedro, laguna, philippines

But did they have children in the end? Cause Ira wrote in his letter for the auction “we compromised” and then een scene is shown with Ruth holding a blond kid.
They didn't sadly. They never saw The little blonde kid donald again ira mentioned but the wife of Little donald appeared years later with a letter donald wrote to ira saying he became a astronomy professor thanks to Ruth who told him he can become anything. They both lived to old age and died without having children.
She leaves him because she can't have children nor is she able to raise a child......I just wish Nicholas Sparks can give some way better reasons for Ruth to do such thing because, in my opinion, these are just too weak for her to leave her husband.
Well, Ruth said that she always wanted to have a lot of children because she felt like it was her responsibility to bring life into the world. It was probably one of the things she wanted most in the entire world. I don't think that's weak reason at all - but I don't think that our generation can really relate to that because there are options like artificial inseminations and adoption, but neither of those were a thing back then. So Ruth knew that if she stayed with Ira she would have to remain childless, which is a huge sacrifice. When you always wanted to have a huge family, that's probably the worst thing that could happen to you. I can completely understand that she had doubts and thought that she had to leave - I guess it's a bit selfish, but I honestly can't blame her for feeling this way. And what's important is that she chose to come back to her husband in the end because she realized that he is more important than anything to her ♥
Omfg 🤦🏻♂️ I’d never heard of this movie, and only knew about it cause of a short clip about Ruth and Daniel and “are you a wolf” scene. So I put The Longest Ride in UA-cam and some movie with Scott Eastwood, with the same name kept showing up. So I googled it and it was then that I realised it’s the same movie haha
honestly Ira and Ruth's backstory was better than the main plot. it would have been a good movie even if it was just about them.

I know right!? Their love story is what made the story good! It's better than Luke's and Sophia's!
Movie actually back fired because even though the roles of those two that had less script time the chemistry was perfect.
