I love that you don’t have your Mics on your desk.. so many pod casts and other YT’s do this and then slam their hands on their desk over and over which is just obnoxious with head phones on. Great setup and tour!
Whoa! Lovely! For reasons known only to UA-cam algorithm creators (I am a member for 2+ years and the 'all notifications' bell is active...), I hadn't watched any of your videos since probably the beginning of the year, and the quality of the broadcast has increased significantly since then. The Canon C100 is no slouch, and the acoustic treatment of the walls has done wonders. Loving everything 💖💖
Hi Tom, I first started watching some of your stuff about a month ago and was impresed with your presentation skills, technical content and production values. I thought there must be at least a couple of people behind the scenes making it all work seamlessly. Just today I found your new studio tour and realise that you do it all by yourself and am completely blown away. Congratulations and thanks for the tour 😀
Yes the ikea kitchen tops are great I build my lift desk using one. I just love the over all space. Nice job on the Studio. I actually just found you from your talk on PFSense and I am working with now to secure my home. thanks for all you do it is appreciated.
My only suggestion, a cheap one at this is to use a shower curtain or drop cloth in the even a water line busts to protect the server and pc equipment. What I used as simple yet cheap way to protect them. I used a shower curtain for my hot water heater in the event a water line busts.
amazing office and studio tom. like the purple lighting and geometric shapes on the wall. this is useful video for us and perhaps could spawn another related video; setting up your office to work from home. with many of us on video calls; it would be nice to give some tips on making your office look nice for calls. the clean look you have is nice.
Was watching one of your Ubiquiti videos and wondered, how DOES he do all this stuff? Wow, question answered - great video. I got a couple of ideas from you as well. Thanks for all you do here!
very cool space! nice seeing your space and what acually goes into your videos. The only thing missing, a beer fridge! Thanks for all you do Tom, much appreciated.
I think you'd really like the way you look if you eliminate some lighting in your setup that's facing you. If you look at your skin, you're not really casting shadows on your skin, and shadows really help carve the way we see people and their depth. You'll never go back to that much lighting once you try reducing it a bit, you'll immediately see what I'm talking about. Thanks for the video, wish I had that much auxiliary space in my own studio !
Hi Tom, your videos are helpful. I do radio content, and your idea of 20mm plastic pipe to "hang" stuff off what a great idea, why didn't I think of that!! Onwards lets see what else I can break in Pfsense! Captive Portal next..
The studio looks so cool! Do you have any problem with that Camlink 4K? seems like they need a separate USB controller to handle all the data, and don't get along with usb extensions very well. Do you run it at 4k or 1080p? If I had to guess the USB Camlink connects to the Sony 6600 and the Canon connects to the PCI capture card as it would have more bandwidth?
Great job! Thanks for sharing. If you ever rewire, consider using SDI. I use compression sdi connectors and RG59 with my setup. It’s connected to a hyper deck card to my computer and it works great. You do have to add converters, but they are DV powered and would eliminate the UPS issue you had. You can also run any length SDI cable you want and then convert at the end, resulting in really cheap and short HDMI cables. I also run an ATEM switcher. It’s not necessary with your setup, but it was easier for me to utilize all the inputs. I can route any input to any output, and that allows me to keep my monitor count low. Hope that helps.
The camera and pc issue might have been a ground loop and you fixed it by having them on the same outlet. On electrical musical instruments you get a buzzing sound on the speakers when they’re connected to different grounds that don’t match the same frequency.
2 reasons: 1) I run Linux on my main computer which can be more problematic with OBS and capture cards, also don't want the extra sofware on my main work computer. 2) Less chance of any changes that would mess with settings. Each time the studio computer boots it runs a backup to my Synlogy with versioning so I can roll it back if I do make a change and break things.
My computer is an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and 32GB of memory. ua-cam.com/video/Uo9LFspDHo4/v-deo.html The studio computer is an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8 with 16G of memory

Really great to see how far the home studio has come in the past year. Especially love seeing Cloudie McCloudie on your telepromper lol
Yeah, he was lonely sitting up there until this last IT Nation event where I picked up a Linode Penguin to sit up there with him.

Awesome, thank you! And here in July 2023 it's still just me :)
Great tour Tom! I wish I had the space you do! I love that everything is mounted to the ceiling.
Thanks and the ceiling thing makes it nice. Now I just need to level up my RGB game like your setup.
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS your RGB and audio are on point!

This is awesome - I've been exploring your channel for a while and your content is some of the best. Your attention to detail really is on point.
Thanks!
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS No problem!

There is one, but it's in the other side of my basement.
power to you - DIY when possible and sub it out to those you rather not do

Check out Dricore panels for your basement floor. $$ but totally worth it
Congratulations, it’s definitely a creative space to be proud of.

The CamLink4K captures my desktop and yes it does require a full USB 3 controller without another high bandwidth device to work properly.
sweet setup

Thanks, maybe when I get around to upgrading cameras I will do that.
What is the shotgun microphone you are using? Such a clean and nice sound.
Hey Tom. Great video. Just curious why you didn’t stud and insulate your exterior walls for energy savings? Up in Atlantic Canada it’s a must.
I like leaving the cement walls exposed to I can see if there are any crack or issues that form.
This is an awesome video !! Thanks for doing this Tom !
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Got some ideas for my setup now :) thanks sir !!

Great idea with the noisy gear in the other room.
Only make sure you get the electric wiring get checked out from a different company, just to be sure not to create a fire.
Cool! What sorts of things are your Raspberry Pi's used for? Anything complex or just simple management of things?
The on Pi is used for Home Assistant the other is an older Pi 3 and mostly just testing for random things.
Any chance of racking the PCs in the future
I will do that the next time I rebuild my computers.
Awesome setup. Spec wise any reason you run 2 PC's there - is the studio one JUST for encoding/recording?
2 reasons:
1) I run Linux on my main computer which can be more problematic with OBS and capture cards, also don't want the extra sofware on my main work computer.
2) Less chance of any changes that would mess with settings. Each time the studio computer boots it runs a backup to my Synlogy with versioning so I can roll it back if I do make a change and break things.
Thanks for the update
I’m in Rochester Hills and will be finishing my basement soon. What did they charge for the drop ceiling?
It was rolled with doing my entire basement so I don't recall the exact price, do shop around.
Nice studio. I use DR Studio 18.
What OS is the main computer?
Hi, do you have the specs of your pc’s ?
My computer is an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and 32GB of memory.

The studio computer is an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8 with 16G of memory
If nothing else, I am investing in a bath rug for my computer desk.
It's one of those extra soft ones and It feels so nice on your feet!
Fun fact: Currently, those 2 Raspberry Pi are probably the most expensive pieces of kit in that rack :D
True, they are a bit pricey these days.
you have all the stuff, but stock cooler...sorry for me stock cooler=egg PC
Cannot believe that it’s legal for you guys to touch your own power distribution boards, license trades only here.
We do have inspections that are required when permits are pulled but home owners doing their own work don't need permits.
