One of the Dumbo Octopuses closest relatives is the vampire squid. Both are also closely related to Octopuses and distantly to squid, but technically are something else entirely.
Do you have any sources for that? That sounded interesting, so I decided to look it up, and so far I haven't been able to find anything backing that. I'm mostly finding information saying that vampire squid are part of a sister-group to octopoda. meaning they're not any closer to dumbo octopuses than they are to other octopus species. I'm no expert, though, so I thought I'd ask, who knows, maybe there's some ongoing debate about the topic or something that I'm not aware of.
@@Jukajobs So taxonomy can get kinda confusing with the ways they can organize and separate groups. So to simplify it slightly in Cephalopods you got the Decapods which is the squids and cuttlefish and the octopods. In the octopods you have order Vampyromorphida (vampire squid) and the order Octopoda. Octopoda is further divided into Cirrata(dumbo octopus) and Incirrina (all other octopus); The Cirrata, have a small internal gladius (chininous vestigial shell) 2 fins on their heads, and they have 2 appendages near each sucker on their arms or Cirri. While the Incirrina do not have these 3 traits and includes the rest of the octopus. Genetic data has shown that the vampire squids are thought to evolved first because, while having 8 arms, they still share some body features that are more squidlike. For example they have a gladius, a chitinous "shell" in their mantles which is more reduced and vestigial in the octopods, They also have 2 kind of sticky feeding filaments which they extend to catch marine snow and other prey which are thought to be reduced tenacles. Squid will have 2 separate feeding arms or tentacles that are different from the other arms. Vampire squids also have suckers only partially along the lower part of their arms where Octopods will have them along the lengths of their arms. They do share the trait of having the fins on their heads as well as Cirri along the lengths of their arms on the underside with the Cirrate octopods which are the dumbo octopus like seen in the video.
You just broke my cuteness meter. What wonderful creatures. I hope they share the planet with us for a long time yet. Great work as usual. Thanks from hot Vienna, Scott
Wow thanks for this amazing footage, fascinating! Real cephalopod geek here, my guess on identification; 1st octo - Almost definitely a Cirrothauma Magna, also known as the Giant cirrate octopus. This is the biggest of all octopus species with dumbo fins (that we know of) and can grow to almost 2 meters in total length! 2nd octo - Definitly a species of Grimpoteuthis, although it's hard to say wich one specifically. The pigmentation is a different from what i've seen elsewhere. 3rd octo - Also definitely a species of Grimpoteuthis. Looks like this one might be at the end of its life cycle? When they near the end of their lives they get scruffy and pale looking skin, often starting at the tips of the arms and moving up. But I'm not an expert just an enthousiast, love to know the experts opinion on these!
Shouldn't they be doing the diagnostic shots first and the beauty shots after? Id something happens or the animal flees, the science part is more important, isn't it?
I know this is edited, but is there a way to just add measurements on audio? Not to overlap the video via a cc?I'm ref to the first one. But no matter, each one, please? You know and know the cam distance, we have bo ref.
It's always adorable to hear that even professional's hearts melt when they see cute critters

Imagine aliens thinking humans are cute - aww did you see his tattoo's? So vibrant!
I guess elephants find humans cute in the same way we find animals cute
Dumbos are awesome. Thanks for showing us this.

Massive Dumbo cutie sassy octopus
It looks like a Rocinela isopod attached to the first octopus.
Beautiful freaks.)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Was this a record for Dumbo octopodes?
its like it has a fish fin butterfly but its an octopus, squid?
They're something else entirely. They're closely related to Octopuses though. Only distantly to squid.
💙
An albino vampire squid maybe?
They're quite similar in morphology but completely different animal.
I know this is edited, but is there a way to just add measurements on audio? Not to overlap the video via a cc?I'm ref to the first one. But no matter, each one, please?
You know and know the cam distance, we have bo ref.
How far apart are the scaling lasers?
10 cm apart
Are the lasers for a distance calculation?
It's for size reference. The distance between two lasers is 10cm.
@@dewantoroo Thanks!
