Thankyou once again Richard for a very interesting video. It is a fascinating village with such a beautiful church. Your knowledge of the whole area, along with the input from Martin, really adds additional interest to the piece. It always amazes me to discover the most wonderful and attractive area we live in.
One of my favourite places to go, summer, autumn, winter and spring, such a beautiful place with tons of history, thank you both for the informative video, loved it.
Nice to see your video my family come from old Bosham, my great great grandmother and grandfather are Buried just in front of the main church door. There names are Collins. Thank you.
Local legend holds that Canute's daughter drowned in that millstream. The historical record only shows one daughter for Canute and she's otherwise accounted for, so one wonders how these legends spring up. Bosham Church is also depicted in the Bayeux Tapesty. Lovely walk with the lovely Martin!
hello Richard , Tony here , so you made it to Bosham , i stood in front of that grave in 1951 along with my school class led by our history teacher Mr .Dolman ..i was 13 , he told us that Canute was a Viking king of England who helped to intergrate the Vikings into Britain , I have always considered myself of Viking blood ( no not the rape and pillage ) the love of the sea , plus I dug up , what the Worthing museum said was a Viking spear...i never got it back ..i was at the time planting potatoes in our front garden ...no flowers of course ...there was a funny noise in the sky ,...then it stopped , i looked up , there was this funny looking aircraft ....next minute i was inside our indoor bomb shelter , my dad had dragged me in there, there was a bang ..cracked a wall and made a crater in a field about 400metres away, it filled up with water very quickly due to all the springs there. dad said it was a V 1 .
What a lovely place to visit. Cnut the Great ( canute ) should have tried turning back the tides of time, as he only lived for 45 years. Patrick Mcnee loved Bosham and wanted to be buried there, but alas ,he was Cremated in the U S. Looks nice ..but I'm not sure I'd want to be woken up by waves lapping at my front door. Nice video. Pint well earned.
Excellent film. When I first came across Bosham I could not believe how beautiful a place could be. Holy Trinity Church is a stunning example of an ancient English church. I was told that the tower is the oldest stone clad building in England! The Blue Anchor pub has a lovely outside terrace overlooking Chichester harbour where can can sit and eat their delicious fish and chips, washed down by locally made wine or beer! 🥳
Great video as always Richard and Cnut was certainly a fascinating character. Strangely I was only reading about Bosham church a couple of days ago after looking up info on the little chapel that I mentioned visiting when I was a teenager near Pagham which I now believe to have been St Wilfred's Church at Church Norton just north of Selsey.
Thanks very much for that guided walk Richard, myself and a friend are possibly going to do it next week, did walk in that area a few years ago but it definitely needs more exploring, and I do seem to remember the Anchor Bleu pub some really good real ales in there, we are from the Isle of Wight so it's quite easy to get to.
Haha! As soon as you said Martin I said is he wearing orange? Wait for it.....bam! Yes his is!😂🤣😂🧡 Bosham is an absolutely amazing little coastal village. I just loved all those diff cottages. And that church! That church was gorgeous! Loved all those arches throughout it. Just beautiful! Thanks for the history!
Bosham is a place I’ve visited a couple of times, very picturesque. Interesting to hear some of the history. It must be tricky living with the high tide twice a day. Your secret is out, I saw your massive film crew in the background of one of the opening shots 😉
A curious point. Knights, with their swords, would blunt them when entering a church in the shape of a cross as a sign of respect. These marks are still visible on the right stone doorway of the church. 12.23. Bosham is also mentioned in the Bayeux tapestry.
Richard, I'm beginning to read your mind through your enthusiasm for - it seems - everywhere! Have you considered visiting THORNEY ISLAND yet? Do 10 minutes research on the place and I guarantee you'll be hooked! Loads of interesting history and the walk along the water's edge is 8 miles around the entire Island or to be accurate peninsula. There are no available short cuts across the island. I look forward of supplying a verse or two to the comments section once you have !!
Have you ever visited Bradwell in Essex there is a 7th century church built on top of a a roman Fort the saxon shore... very remote I sail from the marina at bradwell Waterside also the remains of Bradwell Nuclear Power Station decommissiined and old Barge Quay at Bradwell
Martin never did carry out his veiled threat to shoot anybody who didn't pronounce it with a 'Z', especially as you did with 'SH' several times .Interesting place, nice looking church with massive stone columns for it's size. Thought Martin was a goner coming up the slipway, but he regained his composure !
Me too, I was surprised not to hear it pronounced Bozam. Great video. I would go to Bosham with my mum and dad, who lived close by, and you could always tell if a parked car was not that of a local when the tide came in!
Sorry Richard, couldn't resist it !! BORDERLANDS (verse 186 of 881) Excuse me that was incorrect, I think you just said BoSHam.. Sounding like that other place not far away called CoSHam.. Allow me to enlighten you before the lynching process.. BoZZum is the way it's said now go and flaunt your progress. JB22.
Vespasian was the commander of the 2nd legion at the time of the invasion and the only link to bozam is that the 2nd may have landed there as it is recorded they headed straight to the relief of the pro roman duboni tribe which is Gloucestershire then returned for the battle at Rochester Vespasian then led the invasion of the west dorset and devon he was back in rome long before the welsh campaign and the iceni revolt as for cnut try Danish not saxon
the reason for bozam being rated o valuable in doomsay is it was the main seat f the Godwinson family Just in front of the church was he earls great hall this is why cnut was there and Harold I was the quasi capital of England there is indeed evidence of 7th century remains in the area and continued digs may well fill the gap back to the roman palace
💕🙋🏼Morning Richard and Martin.....'Arse over tit' is an wholly inappropriate expression.... kids watch these vidoes.... disappointing to say the least...😳👍🏻

Thanks so much for watching.
Richard thank you ever so much
I missed a lot of your suggestions - but this was a while a go. :) Happy to oblige.
@@RichardVobes thx
Doing what you do best Richard !
In the 50s someone had davits on the front wall to hold a dingy. Cottage on the corner. Brings back memories
Nice to see your video my family come from old Bosham, my great great grandmother and grandfather are Buried just in front of the main church door. There names are Collins. Thank you.
Thank you for your wonderful videos Richard. I miss Martin though, he hasn't been in your videos in a while! Hope he's doing okay?
Loved the humility of your guide . A true find indeed ...
I remember visiting when I was 11, all the way from Australia. I was very interested in reading the grave markers

Oh the world is full of legends - and England is richer for them. :)
Superb Area...Stunning a bit like Blakeney Wells next Sea in Norfolk..

Sounds like you had a narrow escape in the war there! Well done to your dad.
England not Britain

Another great video - I must get to Bosham at some point!
Lovely place
nice fun walk guys, really interesting King Canut connections thank you
My pleasure as always! :)

Bosham looks an interesting place for a visit 🤘

Thanks Sid - a lovely place indeed. I need to go back and film when the tide is in. Selsey has to be another place to add to the list!

The Anchor Blue pub is still there - but I haven't been in. Enjoy it when you go - loads of tourist in the summer months though.

Simon Brown Yes they follow me around everywhere. I wish I had more shots of the water.
Yes the shots of the water did look good. A very calm and glassy surface.
A curious point. Knights, with their swords, would blunt them when entering a church in the shape of a cross as a sign of respect. These marks are still visible on the right stone doorway of the church. 12.23. Bosham is also mentioned in the Bayeux tapestry.
Oh yes - these sword marks are around on many old churches. Thanks for watching and commenting!
One strong memory is the sea salt air mingling with the sea weed as yes slipping amusingly down the slipway
Good memory!
There is a headstone in Bosham churchyard to Eliza Nutter which always made us giggle!
I must look at up! :)
I live in Bosham!
Bosham was King Harolds manor before the conquest.
So I understand. Lovely place.
Very nice sea.

Sounds interesting!
7:33 Ricky Gervais is that you? That was hilariously awkward 😂
Made me lol
Ever thought of exploring Southbourne?! 🤔
Very interesting. I would have liked to see the tide coming in......perhaps you could do a time lapse of that.
ya I would love to see that
me too ^^
Will have to spend another day there sometime. :)
Juergen Taddicken Oh blimey!
Our last king is buried in the church..
Do you mean Harald? I understand it's Waltham Abby which he built.
The thing I remember from Bosham in the 70's apart from the church was the centuries old graffiti scratched into walls.
You got to love the old graffiti!

Yes, that right - I continually went on and confused myself by mispronouncing the name throughout!
Me too, I was surprised not to hear it pronounced Bozam. Great video. I would go to Bosham with my mum and dad, who lived close by, and you could always tell if a parked car was not that of a local when the tide came in!
I be there so nice
How many orange shirts does Martin have?
Too many!
Sorry Richard, couldn't resist it !!

I am sure he doesn't. :)

Hi Patti - oh dear have I offended you.
Arse over tit is really not used enough these days I think :)
Too true.
so as to fall over in a sudden or dramatic way. British Vulgar Slang as given in the Dictionary :-)
Tell that to James Joyce and John Steinbeck. Both authors used that phrase in their texts. Suppose children can’t read such graphic novels?
What a thoroughly awkward video. The speciman in the orange shirt comes across as vacuous. It all has the air of amateur lack of planning.
