Isn't it better that the tribute parade costumes don't look like they were designed by the main stylist of the film? In universe, each district has a team of two so it makes sense that the designs would be disjointed district by district. I also think the whole "not as talented" designers accentuates the superiority of the costumes that were designed well; namely, those of the richer ("Career") districts and the outlier that District 12 was that year with Cinna and Portia as their new designers. Often times, Katniss describes the previous years' tribute costumes as tacky and embarrassing, especially since they desperately attempt to tie into the tributes' districts and the stylists attempting to one-up both the other stylists and previous years costumes. I don't know if the styling designs of the movie were intentional or not, but they do tie into the narrative of the book, as well as the overall concept that, to the Capitol, these tributes are silly and cheap fodder for their entertainment (not worth much beyond a few ohhs and ahhs but mainly sacrifices so that the ultimate victor shines more).
I agree! The other designers likely didn't care about designing their outfits as much in canon since why put so much effort into the outfits of children 'beneath them' just going off to die. Their task was to make them represent their district nothing more, it's like those cheap Halloween costumes of different country's traditional garments , the designers don't know/care about making them look right to the actual people from those places, just so long as the majority like them (which is the ignorant Capital who only know steryotypes), why bother? It also makes Katniss and Peeta stand out more because you can tell they were properly designed with care.
District 12 reminded me a little of 1930s Germany, maybe because of the dystopian setting, or perhaps the attire itself wasn't too different from America in the 1940s. Sure, many photos show different attire, but those are mostly for colder weather.
Hi edi, I think you are bang on here. The Justice Building in district 12 (and the Capitol itself) is based upon the fascist arcitecture of Italy and Germany. The colours of the costumes are stone cold colours, not the more vibrant colours like I showed you in the samples of the flour sacks. It's meant to be a direct contrast to the costumes of the 1 percenters in the capitol.
Yes! 👏🏼 Excited for this one! I love the Hunger Games costumes! Effie was one of my favorite characters, loved her McQueen butterfly dress even though it wasn't designed by the movie crew.
I’m such a huge fan of the Hunger Games and have been since the 2010s!! I’ve watched so many of these types of videos because years later I still can’t get over how strong the attention to detail was in these movies. The costumes especially are so detailed, play such a huge role in showing the contrast between lower citizens and the capitol/capitol favorites, and are one of my favorite hunger games topics to listen to! I’m also currently writing a hunger games fan fiction and this video helped so much in figuring out what the parade costumes were lol. Thank you for this in depth commentary it was so fun and interesting!
I'm a simple humanoid being. I see Heidi uploading a video, and I run a marathon on top of a speeding cross-country train while battling demons and evil hot guys before tripping and falling on my face, and thumping my forehead onto the phone screen, accidentally clicking on the video. Then I just brush the blood off of my broken nose and proceed to watch the video while chaos reigns around me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 But seriously, the video was great. Did you know that Aaron worked in a Hunger Games film as costume assistant? Not entirely sure, but I think it was this one, I remember him telling me about working on the red dress and making Jennifer Lawrence laugh. It'd be kinda cool to do an interview and ask him about the experience, he can tell you some tales. 😁😁😁
Your channel is so awesome ! I love learning about costume design - it’s such an essential part of film that too many people overlook. I love watching for wardrobe changes in characters as they grow. Thank you !!! You deserve millions of subscribers !
I just discovered your channel and I am beyond elated. I have long wondered where is content like this? Lo and behold I see your phenomenal Logan’s Run video in my feed and I subscribed so fast. Well done.
The Hunger Games is my all time fav book series. There’s a lot in it I relate to. I love the movies as well. Thanks for this video. I found it very informative!
The only costume moment that ever bothered me was a moment in catching fire when katniss makes a joke to Peete about effie's wig being orange (which was in the book) and in the movie the wig wasn't orange. And it only bugged me because they kept the joke about the wig being orange in the script but didn't keep the visual aspect of it (the wig being a bright pumpkin color)
Gosh, I'm late! Great video, Heidi! I like how easy it was for me to see the inspiration for the costumes, even not knowing much about fashion history when the movie came out. I always thought the other tributes' costumes in the parade were supposed to look kinda lame. That was what I understood from the books. Peta and Katniss' costumes were an anomaly because they were so cool. Just my impression. Always love your work! I look forward to a video on Catching Fire's costumes!
I’ve been waiting for one of my favourite costume design youtuber to make a video like this one because i personally felt that something that could’ve been improved upon in the films was costume design !! I can’t wait to watch this video later :)
There wearing us army tanker boots. I’m glad to see the on screen but these are not boots meant for hiking long distance. There meant for long rides inside of armored vehicles. They have buckles and straps because laces melt when covered in hot machine gun shells. But mostly there traditional and can only be worn after you have qualified on a table 6 gunnery. I’m very surprised the actors found them so comfortable while hiking for so long.
Crazy how the poor in Hunger Games dress better than many people choose to dress (graphic t-shirts and college pants). Well at least in my opinion these look more natural and comfortable and stylish! Although t-shirts can be sometimes fun.
Your channel is wonderful!! I love costume analysis, I've watched most of your videos and subscribed. I was wondering though, would you ever consider doing a video on mirror mirror or if not any other films that involve Eiko Ishioka? I love her designs
Hi creativeannie, thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. I did Bram Stokers Dracula ages ago but I have been meaning to do Mirror Mirror. I hope I can get it done in 2023 along with some other shows I have wanted to cover. Happy New Year!
As someone who lives in the Appalachian mountains... It's Appa-Latch-Ah, not Appa-Lay-Shuh! 😂 Great video though, love all the work and attention to detail you put in. 🥰
@@Costume_CO oooohhh, thank you! I really enjoy watching this type of materials, which include a close look at the characters and analise of how costumes fullfil the movie characters
Your video makes me wonder why I find the costumes of the government district so repulsive. Sure, there were some more subdued attires I liked, but the flashy ones made me cringe and that's most definitely as intended by the costume designers. However, I do regard myself as a rather unconventional man in that I would wish that it would be more socially accepted to wear more flamboyant attires. I love the embroyded silk kontusz as seen in my profile pic, and many costumes from the renaissance, but also modern day Indian Sari and many other attires with unconventional cuts, patterns and rather abundant colors... That's probably a big reason why I subscribed to your channel... Thus, I can't really understand what brings up these negative emotions seeing the attires in this movie.

as a stephen king fan, it makes a lot of sense that district 13 is apparently in New England
Oh is it? Are you going to see the new movie?

I would've loved a bit more effie but these were great all the same.
I might make a video just about her.

the youtube channel moderngurlz has a video all about effie !

Thanks April. This is just the first movie but I agree about the Alexander McQueen costume.
A whole Effie video please!!!!
I will consider it! It's hard to get to everyone when there are so many costumes!
the shoes shown for katniss and prims reaping outfits are so cute
