In my opinion, Johanna was the most tragic. She was tortured, lost her loved ones, betrayed and left the world alone.

@@SpammytheHedgehog I do understand why Katniss breaking her promise hurt Johanna, Katniss had a good reason to break the promise. Johanna was the most tragic in my opinion. But I do believe that Annie should have been more tragic than Peeta because he had his wife and Annie did not have Finnick.

I think people underestimate just how tragic Annie's ending was, she was left mentally deranged and a single mother with the responsibility of raising a kid while suffering through PTSD and insanity without any support system. Finnick and Mags were the only support she had, and Finnick was the only one who can calm her down when she gets an episode and they're both gone.

I'd like to believe that Katniss' mom and Annie eventually became friends while in District 13. This friendship will then blossom into a kind of mother and daughter relationship and Katniss' mother looking and guiding Annie through motherhood. As even though she became broken after the death of Katniss'father and losing Prim, guiding Annie will be her chance to have a daughter and correcting her wrongs on Katniss and Prim.

Finnicks death has the same symbolic meaning as Fred Wesely's death. The unfairness of life and war. The passage in MJ when he dies, and Katniss feels like she can see his life flash before his eyes, sailing on a boat, Beetees tridant, Mags smiling and laughing, Annie in her wedding dress, etc, it's so profoundly personal and it's almost like as a reader, you feel like you're invading someone's happiest personal memories. Katniss and Finnicks friendship was so beautifully crafted, especially in MJ when they comforted each other while Peeta and Annie were in the Capitol. I wish we could have seen more of Finnick and Annie in the books and the movies honestly. They're such a beautiful couple. I'll never get over his death either.

    Prim.
Prim was only seven (?) when she her dad died. She watched her sister starve and her mother go into shock. She got reaped for the hunger games and instead had her sister take her place. She had to spend the entire hunger games watching her sister nearly die on tv multiple times. When her sister was forced back into the arena again, Prim had to watch a Katniss blow up the arena. She had her home bombed. She watched her sister deal with Peeta. Hell, Prim was the one who talked to help Peeta. Prim was sent into battle a year to young and was blown up on the field.

She’s the kind of person that loves deeply but doesn’t open up easily, I think Katniss was the first time in years she started having someone there for her, only for her to feel that she betrayed her. It would be very hard for to open up again.

I do too, it's too awful to think she really had no one for the rest of her life and just suffered with agonizing PTSD until she died, unable to even bath herself. I like to think maybe she found comfort in an animal, maybe a dog, or a cat. I don't think Katniss and Peeta would have left her without at least trying to make contact. I know there was a huge divide between them after Johanna voted yes for the Capitol Hunger Games, but I don't think they would have abandoned her completely knowing everything she's been through. Especially Peeta, given that they had a joining rooms in the Capitol. Although, now that I think about it maybe seeing Johanna would have sent Peeta into one of his flashbacks for that same reason, part of his torture was hearing Johanna tortured.

Sad thing is people only focus on the tragedies of finnick or annie. Mags as well had troubling background before her death. She was the first victor during the 11th hunger games. She was the first victor that was made to go on the victory tour which kept her away from her family and home. She was made to live in the victors village after she won and when the tour ended. After all that when she got older she did at least have some happiness and married but when the 75th hunger games came around she knew she needed to save annie and despite being married or possibly having children/grandchildren (this is left unclear in the movie/books) she volunteers herself for the games knowing at 80 years old she has the least amount of chance at surviving. The poor woman couldn't even really speak. She is described as having a medical condition that makes it difficult to her (katniss believes it was some kind of stroke). So mags is left to having to speech with hand gestures after that happened. I dont believe she had the most tragic story but she definitely shouldnt be left out of the conversations when speaking about people involved in the games. Also the 11th hunger games which Mags was the winner of is just one year after the 10th hunger games where snow apparently started to get into things. (The 10th hunger games was wiped from achieves so imagine how crazy it couldve been going into the 11th. Especially if someone stepped out or line etc.)

In some ways, though, I might say Katniss and Prim's mother. She watched her best friend die in the second quarter quell. She got married to the man she loved and had two beautiful daughters, just to have her husband blown up in the mines. She went into extreme depression while Katniss and Prim struggled around her. She picked up again once Katniss learned to hunt, and was doing alright with her apothecary business before Prim was reaped and Katniss took her place. She had to watch her daughter nearly die dozens of times on live television, and deal with her coming home supposedly in love with Peeta. Then the whole thing repeated all over again with the third quarter quell, where she also had to deal with Katniss supposedly going to certain death while pregnant. Then her home got blown up, and she had to evacuate to District 13 with what was left of the District 12 population. She watched Katniss struggle with PTSD and saw her in and out of the hospital countless times. Then Katniss went to the Capitol, and was declared dead. Prim got permission to go to the capitol as well, before she was murdered indirectly by Gale. Not much happened to her personally, but she had to watch helplessly as her husband and daughter were killed while her other daughter suffered through extremely traumatic situations over and over again.

Peeta is so much more tragic than I thought, wow. I do have to agree that Johanna is the most tragic though, as she goes through so many trials in her life to never really see a brighter side or a happy moment. It is also especially tragic to see the toll it has taken on her mental health and her personality, similar to how we see with Haymitch but a lot more dramatic I think. Haymitch turns to alcoholism, but through that he finds some sort of comfort and identity. I don’t feel like Johanna ever really gets that comfort, even when on the morphling, and she never is able to find a real sense of identity either as it has been stripped from her over and over again…

He probably wanted to punish all of District 12 for what happened between them, which is why he starved them the worst, forcing younger children to get tessere and chosen at the Reaping each year. What Snow has never been able to catch onto is that it's the people who suffer the most (the people from the Seam) that have the strongest will to live and the most refined survival skills. This is shown by how little survival skills the Career tributes have in the games. They have never had to starve like the people from District 12. That's why Lucy, Haymitch, and Katniss were able to survive the games. Pure survival instincts. The more you beat people down, the easier they are to control, at least that's what Snow believes. The people of the Capitol gave their political power over to Snow in exchange for the ultimate entertainment, the games. Panem et Circenses, Bread and circus; a diet of entertainment or political policies on which the masses are fed to keep them happy and docile. This provides Snow with the ultimate death grip on the nation because at any moment, the food and entertainment can stop flowing and he would let his people starve if it meant holding onto power. Lucy Grey, Haymitch and Katniss all broke the illusion Snow had tried to create of this dystopian world, proving how fragile the system is. "It must be fragile system if it can be brought down by just a few berries." She watched her best friend become a product of something she hated, leading to her witnessing the death of her sister, and was consistently used as a form of propaganda for both sides. She had it better than a lot of them, but not by so much. (Not forgetting she was a child of the Seam and lost her father, and arguably her mother, at a very young age)

I haven’t watched this yet but I’m gonna have to say Haymitch after hearing the list. He went into the quell with twice as many tributes and outlasted them all, almost dying himself. But his hands weren’t clean. At least Annie won by swimming and all that happened to her, was actually to others around her. She didn’t have to take a life. He had two weeks of peace before everyone he loved was killed. And then his whole life was spent going back to that place. Year after year. He may of had a somewhat happy ending but it took a couple of decades to get it. While tragedy struck the others hard, they were young with many years to live out in peace. Except Joanna… I rank her up there almost with Haymitch. Considering everything that happened to her and her loved ones but she too had the rest of her life in front of her to find peace (I hope she did).

@You were pretty last time I saw you haymitch has gone through the games, one of the worst versions because the quarter quell is so much more than a regular hunger games. More tributes, bigger arena, higher chances of getting killed. He watches everyone die in the quell, okay. He finishes last and gets out, only to be bombarded with "congratulations!" and ptsd from a bunch of silly capitol idiots who don't know better. Then he develops serious alcoholism and tries to cope by making friends with the other victors. Over the years he has to watch children as young as 12 get killed from his district every year. Finally, he mentors katniss and peeta, etc, etc, and has to go through another quarter quell where the VICTORS are reaped this time, and faced with the bullshit of that decision. The kids he thought were safe? Going back in. The friends he's made over the years? Going back in. And most of them didn't come back out. Imagine that. Just years and years of torture
Addiction? Check. Depression? Check. A line Johanna says is "they can't hurt me. Everyone I love is already dead." Haymitch had people. And literally watched them all get murdered on screen. I always find the relationship between Katniss and Haymitch so interesting. They both were quite combative to each other, and Peeta is the one to point out that this is because how alike they are. Peeta is easy to mentor, but Katniss is very much like Haymitch, with regards to his reluctance to accept help; and wanting to rely on their own instincts. Also Katniss hates the idea of having to perform for the capitol like she’s at a dog show; however Peeta sees the value in impressing the capitol citizens. It’s so great seeing the relationship build between Katniss and Haymitch. I think Haymitch does view Peeta and Katniss as his surrogate children. Katniss does not see Haymitch as a father figure but she definitely appreciates everything he’s done for them; and values him as a friend.

She went through The Hunger Games which gave her tons of phiscal stress, then, when she won and when came back home she was never in the right mind and the only person who could get her through it, Finnick, she had to watch him being sold. She was chosen for the 75th hunger games, Mags vollentered for her, then she watched Mags give up her life for Finnick and the others which gave her a lot of guilt. When Katniss broke the arena she was taken by peacekepers and tranported to the Capital where she was torchered with Peeta and Joanna. When she was rescued by 13 yes she married Finnick, and then had what, like a week with him before he was sent out on a misson and died. She had to raise her son all alone. It also appears Haymitch was alone with that pain & guilt till the 74th games when he met Katniss & Peeta. Finnick had 10 years of mentoring, 6 of which would have been spent being gifted out. (which would seem like a lifetime) but at least he had family and Annie, so he didn't have to be completely alone with his pain & guilt.
ITA about Johanna though. I think Jena Malone's portrayal makes us forget how truly tragic Johanna is as a character. I'd love to see a sequel book about her and maybe see her get towards some happy ending. Oh Johanna is definitely the most tragic. Even after everything, she ended up with no one: no family, no real sign of friends, no children or spouse, no purpose or a job that could provide with such a purpose or even hopes for a brighter future... she started with nothing and ended with nothing. At least Haymitch had his geese and his friends, as good as children or even just a niece and a nephew (and Effie if we go by the movie of course), Katniss and Peeta got each other and their babies, Finnick's painful death had a purpose so he became a hero and Annie had a baby to adore and care for after being one of the few characters with perfectly clean hands who also did not die. Johanna gained nothing from all of this. If only we would have known she found a purpose in her job, or had been able to take in and teach children who loved her, or if she had found a new life in district 12 or any other place where she could have a fresh start, any kind of payoff or reward for herself, she wouldn't be nearly as tragic. Sadly, in real life this happens more often than not. Good deeds don't always get a reward. It goes with the theme that wars are not payless endeavors.

Coriolanus Snow also had a tragic life. Although he wasn’t tortured, he was manipulated and had to go through a lot of things in his life. He had to witness a terrible war with his family, who died shortly after as well as his unborn sibling, making him only have his cousin Tigris and his grandmother left. He had to go through starvation and people dying as well as cannibalism and desperation. He had to go to school with Dr Gaul and watch as she tortured his friends, avoxes, and people he didn’t know as a lesson to others who might try to cross her. He had to observe his love, Lucy Gray go through the arena with him being the only person keeping her alive. He had to watch Clemensia being bitten by the snakes and going through the terrifying aftermath of it, and having to lie to everyone about her condition.
Then he was brought to the districts thinking it was for the rest of his life instead of a few months and going back to the capitol. Then he mentally tore himself apart thinking about Lucy Gray and going as far as trying to kill her because of his insanity.
Later, he broke off his connections to his loved ones and family members by firing his cousin and marrying someone that he despised.
Then he had to see Katniss go into the arena having similar qualities as Lucy Gray and singing her songs, which must have either made him incredibly angry, sad, or mentally unwell.
He had to see her win and against the Capitol’s will as well as Peeta.
He also had to kill many people to gain power throughout his years of participating in the government.
On top of that he had to watch as his country fell apart and be publicly killed even though Katniss chose him over Coin.
He lived a pretty terrible life.

He went on missions that made His life a living hell and lost a leg. Even though he got the happy ending that he deserved, nothing makes up for his tragic life - he will never be the same again.

1 Finnick, he spent the entirety of his time with Annie also forced to protect her from prostitution, and died immediately after his life was worth living.
2 Johanna, where there is life, there is hope, she can find happiness, even if only in our minds. Finnick's story is over.
3 Peeta, he never broke his brainwashing, always doubting reality.
4 Haymitch, he recovered from his alcoholism and ended in a better enough place to find happiness free from the type of trauma peeta and Johanna went through
5 Annie, if Finnick had lived, her story would not have been that tragic, her tragedy is magnified by the loss of her support and protector.

Honestly Katniss was also one of the most tragic characters🥲had a horrible childhood in poverty, her father dying, her mother depressed, she had to take so much responsibility at a young age. Than she tried everything to lower the chance of prim being choosen & it still happened. Than all the stuff in the arena, her entire district burned, her sister after everythingdying by the one friend she trusted back home, ptsd from the games - she was in SO many & carried all the revolution & "living a symbol" on her shoulders. So much guilt for all the people that died in her name, the district, the bombs...Really hard life but at least she got a good ending🥲
She definetly had ptsd tho too

I think it goes like this:
    5) Anne
    4)finnick
    3)Peeta
    2)Haymitch
    1) Johanna
Honorary mention) Katniss (reason being, her dad dying, going into the games twice, the temporary loss of her lover, her mom being mentally absent, her sister dying right infrount of her, the physical pain.) I know it's not as much as the others but it's just what I think.

The answer is Katniss of course. She was ultimately thrust into the role of fueling the morale of a rebellion that ends up killing the person she loves the most after the most cruel twist of fate she could possibly imagine threatened that very person, namely Prim. The tragedy of Prim being reaped on her very first reaping is what starts the entire tragedy that is the story of the 3 books together. This singular event devastates Katniss more than anyone and it is a complete act of pure, cosmic misfortune of massive proportions, literally the worst thing she could imagine to happen. In many ways, it's worse than Prim just dropping dead, knowing you'd have to watch her be scared and murdered on live television and your only method of protecting her is to essentially sacrifice your own life to the same torment. Sure, she had no tragic death like some of the other characters, but I'd argue she, for sure, has the most scars after coming out of everything, more than Peeta or Haymitch.

Johanna's my number one too, she experienced both extreme physical and extreme emotional pain and there wasn't anything happy about her ending. I get sad whenever I think of her and I'm shocked she didn't win the poll. Finnick and Peeta had their most loved ones alive, Haymitch had Peeta and Katniss and he wasn't tortured, as awful as their lives were, I'm still very secure in my choice

I almost cried for Johanna when I heard this. If I was in the Hunger Games, I would make it my first job to befriend her and try to help her as much as I can. The others are still very tragic though, I read the books before before I watched the movies and I started crying at Finnick’s death in the books. When I watched Mockingjay, the whole time I was dreading Finnick’s death, it was worse than I thought.😭
    Poor Johanna though.😭😢😭😢😭😢

I would say that Peeta had it worse than Haymitch because Peeta's whole family died as well. Depression doesn't beat mental and physical abuse, and having a lost leg. But, Haymitch did also get a happy ending, but with no loved relatives. My ranking would be: 5. Annie 4. Haymitch 3. Peeta 2. Finnick and 1. Johanna.

This is a very interesting video. I think tragedy is such a difficult thing to quantify, but Johanna probably was at the top for going through everything she did and never really having any semblance of happiness at any time, whereas all of the others did have it at some point, fleeting as it may have been.

i think peetah also went through bad torture other than the crackerjacker venom, he had lots of blood removed and got beat up regularly you saw all the scars and bruises on his face and when they went to rescue him you could see all of the torture weapons, i ultimately think that he deserves the most tragic

  • @BigFanOfManyThings
    @BigFanOfManyThings Рік тому +4

I know the hunger games in both movies and books was Katniss’ story and mostly POV, and we did see bits of how messed up and traumatised others were especially after being tortured, but I wish in the movies they showed a tad more on how Annie and Johanna were effected.
Even now, apart from Finnick saying Annie asks questions to maintain reality, I dunno what the Capitol did to her or how she cooed after, especially then needing to look after a baby.
Peter was horribly tortured and we see what added fear stimuli and brainwashing did to him, he’d also need to be grounded in reality for the rest of his life.
Johanna was only showed to be have been tortured via her shaved head and addiction to morphlin, no couple of lines on how she was specifically tortured with water, and in the table scene in the last movie where they vote on another hunger games, Johanna is there looking clean and glamorous. Again, she isn’t the focus, but they downplayed her trauma because she seems so strong I guess..?

TO THE PEOPLE wondering why katnis is not on the list let me ell you why.
Was katniss rapped for years like other tributes? NO. Was she constantly protected? YES. Did she live in the end while other innocent tributes died because her rebellion ? YES. Did her dam rebels kill other innocent tributes. YES. Maybe this helps you see why katniss is not on this list

@Cailyn Bond going death in one ear is not worse than anything I said. Her being a mother figure has nothing to do with the genes like you said so doesn't count even though it's tragic. i meant she was always favoured in a way. they had a plan to save her in the arena and not others. snow didn't harm her directly after she had won like other winners.so yes in a way she was procted better than others. she allowed cato to stream all night and didn't do anything if I remember correctly.so her disgusting fault there. he didn't deserve to die like that. prim death is the most tragic thing that has happened to her but haymitch had his whole family killed. so even if she was on here she would be on the bottom. she was only a winner for 1 year and didn't get time to suffer like the rest.

I would just like to say that it’s really stupid to call it *her* rebellion or *her* damn rebels. It was all of the districts rebellion and they just forced her into that role of figurehead. It was district 13’s rebels. Katniss was a puppet used to push a rebellion forward at 16 years old. She never wanted any of it. So it’s pretty damn stupid to blame her for it and just says that you didn’t understand the story.
Anyways, super bad take but other than that, yeah Katniss, while she did have a tragic life, she is definitely not one of the most tragic characters in Panem. There’s just a lot of miserable people there because of Snow.

I think that Johanna's abrasive personality is why some people cannot sympathize with her.
I do believe that losing the love of your life is more tragic as they all were tortured and while brainwashing is hard , Peeta seemed to overcome it with Katniss and his kids and Haymitch.

I don't think Annie was as messed up as portrayed. She was definitely very screwed up after the games (as shown with Real or Not Real) but also being labeled as "The mad girl" meant she couldn't be a sex slave or have her loved ones killed as a warning. We're never fully given her point of view but when she talks at the end of the book she's the voice of reason and sanity..
