I've never lived so vicariously through anyone else. I feel your joy, sir!
actually those windows needed to be closed on takeoff or it induced instability which could lead to a crash on takeoff , the reason Merlin engines were never used is because the p-38 was turbo charged and would require a complete redesign to accommodate super chargers , that and the cost and availability of the merlin were slated to the p-51 .
The P-38 is my favorite warbird too. This is exciting!
With 3 great planes dropping in the last 24 hours, we need a video on the how to grow money on trees.
IKR. I'm really tempted by the Lockheed Electra myself but what I really want in MSFS is more vintage biplanes.
Which other planes dropped these last 24 hours ?
@@edanstark428 Junker 52, Elektra -10a
@@rudiverhoeven5414 ok thank you so much
Welcome to flight simming.
I played Jane's WWII Fighters (1998) at the age of 13 when we got our first PC, loved this plane there. Definitely going to buy this at some point. I fly in VR and have a Logitech X52 Pro HOTAS.
How many times did we build this model? Half a dozen!. And being inside this bird is bringing back SO MANY memories! Amazing! Thanks for doing this justice. I've noticed that it smokes quite a bit. I almost feel bad for our planet. I've messed with mixture quite a lot and nothing. Ideas?
Is the mixture auto-set? Some aircraft of the WWII period had this feature, I believe.
@@MegaPeedee I can have that but it's no fun! I like a little danger in my flying! I've yet figured out how to switch tanks too. I guess I'll actually have to RTFM.
If you want to fly the p38 in dogfights vs ai or players online you will wanna check out IL2 sturmovik sim
I hope someday there will be ME 109 or the FW 190.
Great Review as always Mr. Overkill, Can I borrow $33 USD so I can get it lol 😀
Must've been beezy without your windows rolled up.
FYI, the download link you gave us goes to a helicopter.
Okay I bought this aircraft( I mean its a P-38) and my first flight I forgot to lock the canopy and.....yeah I was flying a convertible. Other than my mishap I'm in love with the beauty
Watching this vid and downloading as I write. P38 one of my fave planes. Such a beast. Beautiful.
Looks like you forgot to put the side windows up.
22:36 There you go! Hahaha
The side windows help with sound. It's understandable though because you just sounded soo happy. I'm glad it's really good. I have a soft spot for this plane and the F-16. 1 down one to go!
Lol yeah I found the window crank later in the video lol!
The F-16 in DCS has really become fantastic if you haven't tried it yet
Nice review, had already purchased and loving this bird! BTW, you were accidentally flying with the carburetor air filter on (lever to the right of the mixture levers). Make sure to turn that off before takeoff.
Lovely aircraft, indeed. Did you know that the inspiration for the post WW2 Cadillac tailfin design was the P-38? Harley Earl loved the P-38 as much as you do.
So, tell us the truth, do you really like this airplane?😉. I read the story many years ago of the P-38’ s role in the shooting down of Admiral Yamamoto. Great story of code breaking to know where he would be, disguising that knowledge, and the long range P-38’s key role. Great lore from WWll. Until now we only had external footage of the beautiful P-38. Now we can climb in and learn to fly one. Fantastic! My credit card number is . . .
I hosted Yamamoto's grandson (a naval lieutenant) at lunch a few years ago. Didn't say a word the whole time. There were two officers named Admiral Yamamoto, I learned later and now I wonder which of these two this young man was.
I love it!
Flew it from Clearwater FL over to Fantasy of Flight, to check out the update (really nice looking). Then to Daytona and from there, 996 miles over the Atlantic to Bermuda. A really nice flight of nearly 5 hours.
Shutting her down, cranking the windows, and listening to the birds after flying The P38…Heaven!! They did a great job with this plane and I could relate to your enthusiasm
"I could spend 4 hours in this plane" :-) My first flight - as with all fighters - was a blat around the Mach loop in VR using live weather. But the weather in that area is shocking, so it turned out my first flight was a brief look *up* at hills flashing past me then a climb on instruments up into the sun (I only fell out of the sky upside down once, I don't do IFR, I was impressed) then a play with the gps and the autopilot and a landing at Heathrow. My normal first flights are about 15 mins and give a 5 minute video. My first flight in this one was an hour and a half :-D (the video is on my channel if anyone wants to see my awful flying).
No Merlin engines cause no need = the P38 has a turbocharged engine who fits perfectly well with the Allison engine. Merlin gets a mechanic supercharger. If we swapps the Merlin (with mechanical supercharger) instead of the Allison (with the turbocharger) you get the same performance. Maybe the Allison + turbo is better at high altitute.
One of my favorites planes. Do you know the story of "Glacier Girl"? Saw her when she first came here to EAA, Oshkosh...in pieces from the ice. Then saw her several times after fully restored at the airshow as well. Wonderful. I would love a livery of her!
it‘s such a beauty … i was so happy to see it appear at the xbox store - and hell, i am not disappointed. she sure has to be tamed, but i guarantee that i will take her out for hours to learn how to please her.
back in the days when i grew up there was a magazine called aeroplane (i am from germany), and my mum gifted me every single one of it. it covered all sorts of planes and famous accidents and everything. back then i felt in love with three planes: the dc-6, the a10, and … well guess.
i am incredibly happy to finally own this plane, to fly it and to keep learning what it needs in the flightsim on my xbox.
and i am happy to see someone else as excited as i am. keep on flying!
Disappointing flight model.
If my memory serves me correctly, flying with the windup windows down should cause severe buffeting of the air-frame. This was written in one of my aviation history books, if I get the chance, I will see if I can find that reference to the buffeting.
I looked at their site and loved the aircraft there. But I do not understand why the same planes they have for MSFS and X-Plane 11. Cost $10 - $15 AUD more for X-Plane.
I love the point where you realize the canopy isn't closed up completely. LOL. EPIC!!! In a good way. I think I'll pick up this bad arse flyer.
Well apparently a year later now and I just got the game and this plane (which is awesome) but I noticed in this video the craft has guns and drop tanks, but the same plane I just purchased does NOT with any of the liverys :(
The engine sounds are very good, it sounded odd to you because you were lugging the motors, normal flying is 2600 rpms and 30 on the manifold, you were at 2500 and 24
the P38 lightning alisons had turbo superchargers unlike the P51 and P40 and would not have benefited from having merlins instead
Agree with you 1000%…it is a functional work of art and a treasure of American aviation. The most beautiful ship Ever.
Not correct about swinging on the landing, you were so fast you only had the nose wheel on the ground, try no faster than 95 to 100 mph at the runway threshold with full flap added in the last 100 feet.
I just picked it up for $32.99 my wife was not happy, but I am! LOL. Can’t wait to fly her.
I’d love to get this plane but I still can’t get Xbox app to download on my pc, so can’t upload v6 or more. So annoyed.
Can you fire the guns?
A piece of history there brought to life in flight sim. These old classic planes are starting to grow on me.
Awesome aircraft, loved it like you since I was a kid. Thanks, gonna go buy...
IL-2 Great Battles has one if you want to dogfight. Nice in VR.
the link in the download is wrong
it refers to the NATIVE H-60 Project
Honestly I never knew about this plane. I don't know much about american WWII aviation I must admit but I got this as soon as came out. It's absolutely incredible. It's so different to what we have already and even though isn't nessicerily my favourite warbird to fly, it's up there! Just so beautiful and sounds amazing.
Very few planes in the sim make me want to learn to fly by number as my disability mean I get super fatigues so I prefer to just fly but I may take the time to learn with this one.
Would be so kind to share what rig specs and monitor where you using ? cheers
Nice aircraft and review. However my eyes got locked in to the noisy low-rate rendering of the instrumental panel top cover, eg. at 21.35.
I'm not sure what happened there. Especially as I record at 4k
The p38 was the first to plane I made with no plans. It was the best flying plane I have made. Flew on rails. Until I crashed it into a tree
My Dad had a Corsair that was like that
Does your wife know you're cheating on her with a P-38? Hehehe...
She has her suspicions... but no we've never been caught..
Thanks for this Great video on My Favorite Aircraft of All Time! I'm retired, 69 years old and new to Flight Sims completely (as of June of this year) MSFS 2020 being my first. I have watched every Pre-Release video I found on this Plane hoping to get as much info on flying it as I could, and I am so envious of you guys to be able to fly anything you get into. As for my flying of the P38L, first, I couldn't even get it to start. I think I took too long on the checklist after starting the Battery, and it died, I don't know, even the AI couldn't start it after that. Also I knew that it had the pad somewhere but not where... Thanks for pointing that out, by the way. Anyhow, I have been spawning to the Runway and have successfully taken off and having a Great time flying but landing is a different story. 6 out of 6 flights have ended with crash landings of one form or another. I either come in too hard and bounce all over the place or too slow and stall. Just can't seem to find the sweet spot... I so hope a Tutorial Guide for this one comes out soon. I'll be keeping an eye out for it.Again, Thanks for the Great Video.
You ain't too old...I'm 75 and been flying FS since the late 80's. Lot's o' fun, for sure.
@@clavo4138 Hello, the P38 is not the only aircraft I have trouble with landing. MSFS 2020 is my first Flight Simulator, having started back in March @ 68 and I have very little experience with Controller Settings either, which I think may help a little. I have a Logitech Flight Yoke System, with a second Throttle Quad specifically for multi engine aircraft since I am trying to currently master the Baron G58 but my landing skill with it or any aircraft in the Sim, isn't anywhere near anything I can be proud of. Are there any suggestions for Controller Settings you can offer? Any Help you may supply would be Greatly Appreciated. Thanks!
tat love of details i wish from the Twin Otter :/ it looks soo Well
Love the look of the P-38.
I just don't understand what people do in military planes. It's not like passenger/cargo planes where you can simulate what they actually do in real life. Do people have mock multiplayer dogfights? Do you just fly point to point?
I love the simulation, I just don't really get it.
The jets I agree with you...
The Warbirds... it's a chance to take a step back in time if you let your mind take you there :)
That's why real combat flight sims exist - FS20 is mostly a scenery sim at this time. Fighters don't work in it and tubeliners don't use the scenery so there's that.
Great ride thanks but I can’t find the model to buy in MFS marketplace?
It's not there yet. You would have to go to the Flying Iron website.
Yeah sorry just watched whole video and you did it ooops
It’s always fun to listen to someone’s inner child come out. Kid on Christmas morning.
Perfect analogy of that situation! lol
Thanks. It was and it still is my favorite Warbird. Do you know that the author of Le Petit Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, vanished in the Mediterranean while flying his P38 between Corsica and the French Riviera?
Apart from the tiny errors that appear in your test flight - which will be undoubtedly fixed, the exhaust smoke is missing. However, she is on my wishlist!
Complete waste of money. These modding companies should be working with eagle dynamics.
The later Allison engines as used on the P38 were about as powerful as the Merlin. The big advantage the Merlin had over the early Allison was the dual stage supercharger in the Merlin vs the single stage in the Allison. The later Allisons that were used in the P38 had much more effective forced induction making them pretty much equal to the Merlins. That is why they didn't put Merlins in P38. It would not have offered a performance improvement.
You need to close bottom windows for sound to change
6:58 Wait a sec: The supercharger light is a feature in an earlier P-38 Lightning model. I think they took it out in the H model when they installed the new turbo. The light was merely an overspeed warning light, not a function light.
Your patreon links appear to be truncated and broken
Beautiful aircraft and great job on behalf of the developer. Just a note to anyone buying it, if you have the Heavy Division 787 mod installed, deactivate or uninstall it when using the P-38 because it somehow makes the tablet unusable. Hope this helps.
Manifold pressure is at 2000????????, Maybe you meant 2000 RPM
What!!??? :) I was ummm... testing the self destruct system lol
How are you opening these doors on these planes?
Thanks, I feel your enthusiasm. Ok I am thinking money now. It is a beautiful creation but I am waiting for the De Havilland mosquito model. Don't know if anyone is on it.
Did you have a strong crosswind? The P-38 doesn’t seem like it should need a lot of rudder on landing.
You want to know about the P 38 check Colonel Robin Olds he’ll tell all about compressibility
Great video Mr Overkill and you've sold the P38 to me.....🤗👍
The download link posted is a helicopter mod...kkkk
Ahhh shoot.. I'll fix that
Love your enthusiasm for this beautiful plane. Looking forward to when I can afford it. Will enjoy watching your future videos on this one. Your delight brings a realism, you can almost imagine that you are flying the real thing. VR should be mind blowing!
will this playing be in the marketplace or only from their website?
Very frustrating I purchased the plane file is in my community folder but is not in the game idk what’s going on.
Usually, the unzipped file in the Community Folder is the install file. For my PT-17 Stearman, the only 3rd party plane I have, I had to execute the application file, which then had me enter the serial number, and then installed all of the necessary files.
Like a kid in a candy shop...lol
Have you seen one in real life, they are one very big machine.
Glad I made your day
Yes I have and you did indeed! Amazing bird
Don’t tease me. I fly DCS but if I bought MSFS it would be solely for this aircraft.
They both definitely have a place my friend lol
Waste of money I finally Uninstalled msfs2020 to free up room for something else. Real tired of the total disappointment. Stay on dcs and support them. This would have been amazing on dcs. Completely pointless here.
@@homeworxchannel4120 i passionately disagree. each to their own i guess?
@@goalski134 I'm probably a bit more salty since it got hyped up and I used to play FSX alot and so I built a sweet computer and 3d printed some throttles and spent all this money for a super disappointing game. I'm glad dcs doesn't disappoint as much.
@@homeworxchannel4120 this is probably fair enough. the sim did fall short in a number of areas and for me at least, SU5 made it even worse. i still thoroughly enjoy it though and hope it will improve.
Where can I download the P-38 lightnight?
I built a model of this airplane when I was around 13. I have loved it ever since and was very excited to see that it was being released. I've had a couple issues with it and I have a hard time not overheating. Any tips for that?
Check your mixture. Make sure the coolers are set to auto... worst case scenario... turn engine failures off from the pad :)
I won't tell anyone
What head tracker are you using for these videos?
I am so on the fence... I may have to jump in
wow - really beautiful and well done version of the P38 - I can absolutely feel your enthusiasm!!! Great video from a great guy!
Beautiful graphics..do u know what final is? Or an instruction manual..not trying to be harsh..but turning rhw sound down..I can't hear the engines lol
I agree completely on the sound you don’t even really hear the props.
He's complaining about the prop sound being too loud with the canopy closed. Hilariously though , he's forgotten to close the side windows :)
Plane is to slow. Top speed should be around 420mph
Remember we were down low and the super charger never engaged
@@OverkillSimulations where’s the super charger is it auto?
That is True Air Speed (TAS) at perhaps 25,000 feet. The Indicated Air Speed (IAS) visible on the instrument panel would be about 290 mph Indicated Air Speed for 420 mph True Air Speed at that altitude. Re the ‘supercharger’ not being engaged, any time the manifold pressure is over 30 inches at low altitude the inlet charge is boosted.
Turbos are throttle-engaged. Whenever you push the throttle past 2/3rds the waste gate begins to close.
Typo in the title! Panic!
sigh... I'm on a roll lately....
@@OverkillSimulations haha, love the videos man. Hope this plane is on Xbox!
Great to see you enjoying it! BTW the exterior sounds may improve if you roll up the side windows. It’s happened to all of us!
Yep! Lol found it later in the video lol..
