no matter your religion, I'd like to give respect to David for talking about his on a live podcast. It's difficult for some people when their beliefs are questioned or challenged but they made it such an open conversation. It's noble of him to note that he doesn't have it all figured out and that everyone is on their own individual journey.

I took religion in college. The one thing that stuck with me was: jesus' message was simple, it was the church who complicated it.

Life is complicated. e.g. Jesus didn't outright say slavery is wrong, it an obvious conclusion from his teachings, but even the apostle who understood him the best, Paul, still never took it to that step (no-one did, until Gregory of Nyssa) Same with a lot of other teachings, is it clear from his teachings what our stance on divorce should be? on abortion? what does he mean when he calls himself the Son of God? is he God, the Son of God or both? It's totally complicated.
Apologies (I go off on tangents sometimes lol), I don’t think I fully answered the question about babies or those who have never heard of Jesus. My answer: I believe that God is fair and is a God of love, but ultimately, he will be the one to decide because he is God and we are not.
Not sure if you've heard of this, but some Christians (myself included) believe in an age of accountability. So babies and very small children literally cannot grasp the concept of God, so they are exempt from his judgement. Again, tying into his love and justice. By the way, you did an excellent job at presenting your views, and I really appreciate your insight :) God bless, brother.

In Puerto Rico there was a belief that any kid bellow 7 was considered pure because they couldn’t hold malicious intent. This probably goes back to Spain aswell but I’m not sure. I’m not a Christian so don’t take it as a fact (obviously)
My understanding from the Bible and God's love is that everyone's actions has a consequence. We're all human and we all mistakes, and the duty of judgement is not ours. No one can say it's all black and white because it's only up to God. He makes the decisions in the end. I'm Christian too and nowhere in the bible does it explicitly say that a child living in the developing world who did not get the chance to know God is screwed. Someone who is not straight is not doomed to hell. He is a just God and it's ultimately his decision to make in the afterlife. There really is no point in arguing and hating each other because of our differences.
if you’re really an open minded person, you should look up cross examined by frank turek. He’s an apologist that answers these types of questions
I am a Christian, and I'm always so excited to hear other Christians talk about their faith publicly! I especially respect those who can admit when they don't know all the answers and can take tough questions or conflicting opinion without getting heated. This was a great, open conversation :)

try "Unreasonable?", they invite the leading scientists, scholars, philosophers, you name it, within their fields and have very respectful and fair conversations about hugely interessant topics. There's nothing you can't find. Christian radio/channel, but so good at not taking sides during the discussions.
Christians get such a bad rep, David is a great representative for Christianity. So far he's touched on all the right points.

The fact that there is wars and death in the Bible has nothing to do with the twisted people that use it as an excuse to perform sick acts. There is no excuse for anyone to kill, or abuse anyone else, and the bible teaches that too.

The maturity and kindness during this podcast was very refreshing.
David spoke mad facts in this podcast and as a Catholic, I highly appreciated this conversation. I don’t think Ryan sounded anti anything. You just sounded like a person with very normal doubts about religion and that’s ok!
Yea I have so much more respect for David now. He spoke about the faith respectfully, but also logically and explained what he believed. He wasn’t squishy either. That’s hard to do.

Regarding faith:
If you logically understand that God is a loving creator, and that he didn’t build us as mindless robots, but instead as creations meant to love him, then I think it makes sense that not all the answers are laid out in front of us. To love someone, you can know a lot of things about them, but ultimately having faith in their character and who they are will be the deciding factor of how strong your love is for someone. I think it’s the same way with God. He could easily just show himself, and we can know he exists. He could easily give us all the facts. But even then, that doesn’t mean much. It doesn’t mean we will love Him. That we will truly understand Him. We might know about him, but not truly know Him. He gives us enough clues to show us character, and throughout the Bible he shows us this loving, caring, forgiving Father
We are given that choice: to love Him or to reject Him. There’s no in between. Ultimately it’s faith that brings you to Him and allows you to love Him.
For me personally, I truly struggled to understand this. I understood logically that there was a God, and understood that Jesus was real and died on the cross, but I couldn’t internalize this message. One day I just decided to give up on focusing on the tiny details that didn’t end up mattering and took a step of faith. Because of that I realized and understood that God loved me, and wanted me to see this and love Him (which He doesn’t try to force me to do). He loved me so much that he sent his perfect son, Jesus, to be publicly humiliated, beaten, and to die on the cross for my sins. I always thought I wasn’t a bad person, that I was morally good. But once I realized that I was exactly like those people that put Jesus on the cross, and that Jesus forgave me and died for me despite that, that was how I realized how much He loved me. That is why I’m so grateful to have taken that step of faith and to experience a love as great as this; nothing else can amount to it. And ever since then, everything builds meaning; you see the gospel and God present in every aspect of your life. I’m so blessed to be loved on by my leaders, who have through Christ, were able to love a sinner like me, to teach me the gospel, to pray for me. And of course, I’m so thankful for God for loving me and not just giving up on me. I will love Him forever
I’m kind of in a similar spot, I’ve laid out al the facts and concluded that He has to exist, but I haven’t been able to internalize it. How did you do that?

I really enjoyed this conversation! My friends and I talk about similar stuff all the time. In regards to Christianity, I think David is so right that it's really misrepresented. There's a UA-cam Channel called "The Bible Project" that is informing about this stuff really clearly. Definitely worth checking out!

This podcast episode really reminds me of my religion class at school (i go to a catholic school). Our teacher made it very clear that we should believe in a religion because of our own faith, not because you were told to by someone else.. we are also taught about other religions, instead of just christianity, which teaches us to be more open minded.
I am a believer of God, but I believe that people have the choice to believe in God or not (free will), and regardless of what they believe in, God will still love them.
As an Atheist, I really wish more Christians shared the same thought process as you.

Not to be that kind of person. Just curious by what you mean. He also loves those who don’t believe him (accepts us as we are), however, they just can’t be allowed to be with him in heaven in the after life. Right?
ny93 according to the Bible (2 Thessalonians) it says that non-believers of God will not go to heaven, but in Romans 2 it says that unbelieving people that do not hear the Gospel before they die would be judged by their conscience. Hebrews 11 is also similar, stating that people that lived faithfully in their own religion would be considered for salvation.
WarriorOfThe7 to be honest man, many are nowadays. We’ve gotten a bad rep from the Christians in the 90’s, my parents were like that. Today that attitude has been adopted by many atheists and the LGBTQ community. 🤷🏻♂️ Most young Christians just sit back and try not to act “holier than thou”.

I'm Christian but I respect anybody who isn't being a jerk. One of the reasons why I enjoy Ryan's channel is because he never turns it into a political or religious hatefest and has jokes that aren't offensive yet totally PC

@@jihangirastra3851 Not a Christian, but talking about religion in general here. Religion is supposed to take you where science can't. Science tells you how, religion tells you why. They can coexist, but people today like to make them mutually exclusive - the man who came up with the scientific method was Muslim, and others like Darwin and Newton were religious. I agree that you shouldn't just follow blindly, there should be evidence to base your belief on, but if you're looking for a simple "1+1=2" kind of answer you won't be satisfied with any religion. There is a leap of faith you have to take in order to embrace any religion

Life is terrible right. I’m a Christian and I respect my Muslim friends and Islam.
I've had very dark periods in my life before where ultimately my faith and belief helped me through them. I don't know if I would've been here today if it wasn't for my religion, but I'm not extremely religion and go to church, I just have a strong belief in my faith, which ultimately dug me out of that pit-hole that felt like it was endless.
So I'd strongly agree with David. I've thought about so much of similar points that he brought up, but I came to the same conclusion. Religion is really about being at peace with oneself. Just having faith that there is a plan ahead for me, helped me to believe that those dark periods were simply just phases of my life that I eventually was going to get through, learn something and develop from.
Honestly and coincidentally, I was feeling strong negative feelings about some stuff in my life again until this came out, reminding me of my religion, and how to find peace with myself and my life although I'm about to go through another significant period in it. It's simply my belief and people are free to disagree with it, but it does feel like divine intervention whenever I'm feeling at a low point and something like this comes out or a friend that cares comes along to help me be positive and at peace again.
Thank you David and Ryan for being open enough to discuss this publicly although religion has been known to be controversial. I might be 1 in 100,000 that feels that way about this video, but it has been a great reminder for me.

@Piano Child102 Well, i don't even really remember what i had wrote back then but now i think i'm more respectful. But sometimes i can't really help myself if someone makes a super dumb claim.
There was this one person who wrote (not too long ago.) Atheism is a religion too, and Atheists believe in science blindly. he gave an example with "if a scientist said the Earth was a triangle, Atheists would believe it." I couldn't really help myself.
I grew up Christian and it’s always been a really important part of my life. You touched on some things that I have thought about and struggled with. Like the question: How do you know your beliefs are true? For a while that questions was always in the back of my mind and I really struggled with it because I had never really faced that kind of doubt. But I think it really just comes down to faith. there’s no way to prove 100% that Christianity is completely fact, but you have to have faith. I think most questions and doubts people face in probably any religion comes down to just having faith and trust in whatever it is you believe.
Touching on your first topic, I think that we definitely have complete free will. Yes, God had a plan and a purpose for everyone He creates, but it’s up to that person to choose to follow and obey Him.
I love that you brought up that’s Christians have been given a bad rep. Sadly, more and more Christians aren’t practicing what the religion is all about, which is simply love. A lot of Christians judge, hate, and condemn those who don’t follow their religion. Jesus never acted this way towards anyone. He simply loved despite the hate, ridicule, and abuse he experienced, and he died for a world that hated him just so they could be forgiven. God loves, unconditionally, but unfortunately too many Christians are not using that same practice.
By faith you can believe in anything. Religious belief all require faith because there's simply no evidence to prove any supernatural claims. Its just claims that are to br believed at face value.
Bethany Waters but there are just too many miracles in my life to not believe that Jesus is 100% real. I have really had a rough past but looking back at it, it actually makes sense the plan that God has for me is really significant. Even though I have never seen God before, its really what this is all about! As christians, we have to have faith. I hope that some day, you will overcome this doubt and I believe that even true christians are struggling with this fact. But the fact that you do wonder about this, is a great thing. It shows that you seek to find the truth. I believe that he will find a way to show himself to all of us. Jeremiah 29:13 says “you will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart”. Which I think you are trying hard to seek him! These are my thoughts on all this and I wish you luck on this journey.
Andrew Sugono Thank you!! I did overcome the doubt eventually through prayer and just spending time with God, and I believe overcoming that doubt has really made my relationship with him stronger.
I completely agree with you that I 100% believe that God is real. There’s not a doubt in my mind. I was just saying there is no way for humans to prove that to those who don’t believe. All you can do is spread the word and teach others about the faith.
X God doesn’t value one person over another; he loves us all equally. That’s why I believe he sent his son to die for us. And we’re all sinners, no matter what religion you follow. I can’t tell you what God does relating to other beliefs. God is the only judge; humans have no right or knowledge to say who will or won’t get into Heaven.
Whatever you believe I completely respect!! These are just my personal beliefs!

@@rockhead1731 no of course not and I never claimed to. I just know that arden is because of who she is as a person
I don't know how they* navigate it. But from what I have experienced myself* and seen others do, there has to be some common ground in core values. Like maybe they differ in how they think it all started but they still follow the same moral standards. And it's also of crucial importance you don't make your partner feel stupid for their faith or lack thereof. You can see why they think how they do, you simply have different conclusions. For my boyfriend and I , I have faith, he doesn't. But he admires my faith. We also have a good deal of common ground when it comes to agnosticism. we both acknowledge our limitations in knowledge and that's a lot of common ground to stand on actually. Also a person's view on salvation and the afterlife will play a big role. If I believed God would punish a human for all time, in the worst torment possible, simply for being unconvinced of his deity while in this finite life with very limited knowledge and understanding......then...I would probably be sitting and fretting over my boyfriend all of the time. But I don't think that's what its about, I think it's about a person's heart. And my boyfriend might be a little bit chaotic at times but has a very good heart. The fact that he admires that i have faith at all tells me, I think, that if there exists a God, God will see where his heart was, but that his mind was unconvinced. i trust God to be fair and not a cruel evil dictator.
But yeah a total baptist evangelical will not be able to date an atheist that thinks all religion is stupid.
Really enjoyed today's podcast. The guys spoke about things they were interested in, stated their opinions, and the conversation flowed smoothly. My favourite podcast so far!

My only criticism for these podcasts is that I wish they were longer.
God knowing all our actions doesnt stop us from having free will. Its important to note that just because he knows our decisions doesn't mean he is influencing them.
But if he has a plan for us then we have to follow it.

He doesn't know our actions. We are separate. Human can create, they created sin. God didn't foresee them creating sin, he gave us the choice to do anything. There is only 1 true mind, and we are all variations of that same mind. God bless you

What David says makes loads of sense. He sounds like the voice of reason in this.
What he really says is "I dunno, you gotta have faith." and "If we knew we'd be god, but we don't so we believe". I guess that makes sense cause he admits he doesn't know and just has to have blind faith, but not sure if that's the voice of reason.
I was a little scared to see the comments, afraid that there may be lots of hate about Christian beliefs. But feeling blessed with the conversation and the response. Kudos to David in talking about it.
There’s a great question that Ryan Higa asked here that had to do with how Christians can know that which can not be known. Super logical and valid, great question..just wanted to briefly mention here that another postulate that Christians have is that God is love and desires relationship. At the base of everything, Christians don’t believe in God because the bible exists. Christian believe in God because he speaks and reveals himself to us. The Bible is a product of how God communicates; that’s why it’s called the word (His word). Though by nature he is other than, and thus unable to be conceived by the mind, he is able to reveal who he is to us in ways that we can humanly process. Imagine if an adult living underground had never seen a tree before. In attempting to describe the tree to that adult, one would have to build the idea of the tree by using what the underground already knows. For example, he would say “A tree is like ___.” He describes the tree to be in the likeness of something the man already knows, like the brownness of dirt being like the brownness of wood, but the man still doesn’t understand. Just as humans cannot fully understand what is other than (God), the underground man cannot understand what is other than (Plato’s Allegory of the Cave). But, if the underground man suddenly SAW the tree, he would instantly understand and be able to perceive and thus conceptualize the tree that otherwise could not be conceptualized.
But God isn’t a tree. He’s God. He initiated relationship with us. Imagine the tree being able to move itself underground and appear before the underground man. God reaches down and shows different parts of his attributes to us, and we can experience Him intimately and personally. That’s Jesus. The bridge between paradoxical holiness and love. It’s important to note what starts with faith doesn’t actually end ONLY in faith. By faith, one tastes and sees Him. It starts by experiencing Him. We all have. Not through a face to face revelation with Him, but perhaps through knowing love or encountering moments of his presence. What starts with experience gives the slightest leeway for faith, which is then tempered by experiencing even more of Him.
If anyone’s still reading this, whether you believe or not, He loves you He loves you He loves you. He created you with design and value. You are precious and priceless and greatly loved.

We should all learn to be open-minded, we shouldn't discriminate against someone just because of their faith.
IT is not bad to be Christian. IT is not bad to be an Athiest. IT is not bad to believe in a religion. I really believe those who hardcore believe in a belief and think that it is 100% true indeed go on to become sick people. It's upsetting to see people really want to persecute another's faith. We should all be in this together, working together to bring about a great universal society.
Another thing to note from the podcast, I think several things have indeed been misrepresented over time, with the media having a huge impact on it.
I'm only 15 years old, and I really think it's about time we end discrimination among beliefs. No one should be labelled as delusional.

With that being said, no body should be entitled to respect the beliefs of others. I will respect your right to hold any belief you’d like, but I don’t have to respect the belief itself, and if your religion isn’t worthy of being respected, I won’t respect it.

I think that this was a really good "off the pill" and I thought that david did a really good job explaining deep concepts that you guys were asking, and also Ryan I dont think God made us do a specific thing like this guy is going to die like this and this guy is going to brush his teeth at this time or whatever I dont think that we are controlled like that, we have a choice to do what we want and most of what we do comes from what we learn as kids like from our parents and how they act and so the influences what we do as we get only.

And who taught them? An advertiser from the late 1800’s that proclaimed daily brushing the teeth was good for you. You didn’t have a choice as to brushing your teeth. You may have a choice of when, but you never question whether it’s a Valid health practice.

AWESOME DISCUSSION! Thanks for putting this out there! A couple thoughts: There is an underlying idea behind a lot of what was talked about in this discussion that Science and God are somehow at complete odds. As if you have to choose whether to believe in Gravity or God, but can't believe in both. Sir Isaac Newton was actually a devout believer in God. Science is just the study of the world, and really science changes every year. At one point in history, the great majority of scientists believed the sun rotates around the earth. You can believe fully in God, his love and his good news, and at the same time be fascinated with science. Science does not disprove God whatsoever. There is no science that says God doesn't exist. But that statement could spark a whole debate in itself.
Secondly, in the podcast, David made great points, but as a Christian, I felt that Christianity, spoken of as a religion or sets of beliefes to follow like any other religion, isn't really the main point of Christiainity. Biblical Christianity isn't an "it", it's a Him. God desires us to have a very real, personal, authentic daily relationship with himself. Although he is seated in heaven currently, he also sent his Holy Spirit, (His Spirit), to dwell with us and in us on earth. That means he is physically/spiritually with us and speaks to us If we are willing to listen through his Bible and through other believers too. God of the Bible is described in so many different ways. King, Lord, Shepherd, Friend, Master, Savior, Creator, Father, Redeemer, Bridegroom, and on and on. Jesus taught us how to pray with the Lord's prayer and it starts, "Our Father" God as our father, a good father, is so powerful. You might not have the best father here on earth, but God is the most loving perfect father and it's such a joy to be called his son.
As far as the controversial question posed on the show: I believe fully that ONLY through believing in Christ's perfect sacrifice can one be saved, (kids are an exception). The Bible is very clear, Jesus says there is ONE way to the father and that's through him. He says 'I am the way the truth and the life, nobody gets to the father but by me. (paraphrase)' While it's comfortable to say in this day and age that people should go with the flow, and do what makes them feel good, Love, True LOVE, must speak the truth. If your child is going to get hit by a car, you don't tell them to do what feels good and if walking into the road feels good, go ahead. Love causes us to speak the truth
To anyone reading this who isn't born-again, the truth is this: You are currently dead in your sins, nothing you can do, no matter how hard you try can earn your way to heaven. The Bible says all (all people) have fallen short of the glory of God. God is holy and perfect and can not mix with sinfulness. This is a major quandary and is depressing, BUT God, being rich in mercy , because of the great love in which he loves us, made a way to revive us from death to life. To save our souls from eternal separation from Him. He sent Jesus Christ, who is fully God but fully man, who lived a perfect life here on earth. He is the perfect image of God, showing what God the father would say and do here on earth. Jesus lived his life without sinning. In order to take the punishment we deserve for our sinful life, He was tortured and died a gruesome death on a cross, the Roman times equivalent of capital punishment, because he loved us so so much. The book of Hebrews says "Jesus... who for the joy set before Him endured the cross.." He was thinking about YOU (you reading this) while he was carrying the cross to be nailed to it and die. His sacrifice on that cross was a legal method to take what we deserve. Because of what he did, God says we can become the righteousness of God. By rejecting the world's ways, and relying/believing /trusting in Jesus the Messiah's sacrifice, God no longer sees us as dirty/sinful, but he sees Christ. We become as white as snow in God's eyes, and our sins are not only forgiven but forgotten!! Psalm 103 says "He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west" if you go east you'll go on forever because the world is a sphere. When we grasp that concept, how much he loves us, we want to obey everything he says out of a passion for HIM, not out of obligation or fear of punishment. Jesus suffered and died, and gave himself for us. To say that we can believe in another way to heaven, or just be a "good person" , and still go to heaven is like slapping Jesus in his face saying what he did was pointless. God is absolutely real, he loves you, he cares deeply about you, he knows how many hairs are on your head. If you've read this far, and what I've written resonates with you, please do not ignore it. That's God trying to reach you and love you. He loves you. He offers a free gift and it will change your life in every way for the better. "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" , so when we start walking by faith and not by sight, you will truly witness God's love for you and he will reveal himself to you in that manner. I pray RHPC really begin to seek the Lord. HE IS REALL

As a 50 year-old mother of a couple of teens who introduced me to nigahiga some years ago, I feel strange commenting here now and admitting that I have loved all your videos for years (gasp!) and still look forward to any and all of your posts as an outlet from my busy sandwich-generation life. So many times, I intended to comment my compliments to RHPC on your videos- first world probs, the amazing cardboard/paper/stop motion creations, cooking but not really, parkourse, the HS grad speech, and so many others- but never did. Sorry!
But now I must I applaud this podcast. I am an Asian American, church-going Catholic, who was baptized as a baby. Yet, I completely agree with and/or share the same thoughts and questions that Ryan, David, and Will so eloquently brought up. Literally every single one. Thank you for your courage to talk about religion publicly, despite knowing in our unfortunate climate these days that you might face unwarranted backlash. People do need to talk and share their thoughts with each other. And push themselves to talk with people outside of their comfortable circles. This is one of the most basic ways to enrich our existence as humans AND promote mutual appreciation for individual differences, tolerance, and ultimately, peace.
I am the first to admit I’m an imperfect person who calls herself a Christian but leads a less than Christian life sometimes. My husband, who also probably identifies as an agnostic, sometimes leads a holier life than me.
I’m going to admit that I don’t find reading the Bible in and of itself the most helpful way for me to understand my relationship with God. Rather, reading/hearing scripture then talking or listening to others’ (e.g. priest’s homily) prayerful interpretations of what the Bible readings mean to us in our day and age are most meaningful to me. It demonstrates how timeless God’s intentions, wishes, and merciful love are to us, no matter what generation or where in the world you are.
I used to have a huge problem reconciling Catholicism and its treatment of homosexual people. Then I went to a panel about homosexuality at a Catholic faith-building conference put on by our diocese. The Church’s teaching is not meant to vilify any of God’s children (i.e. every single person). In fact, the church teaches that every single person is worthy of love; every single person is God’s precious creation, whom He loves without exception, even if we fail or turn away from Him or don’t even understand He exists. Back to the topic of homosexuality, the Church does not condone sex that is not the loving act between a married man and woman with the intention or possibility of procreating. So not only does this mean that homosexual sex is against Church doctrine, heterosexual sex that involves the use of non-natural birth control is also against Church teaching. I dare say some judgmental, narrow-minded, homophobic Christians forget this. The Church, in fact, welcomes everyone. Homosexual Catholics are held to the same expectations as heterosexual Catholics when it comes to living faith-filled lives in accordance with God’s teachings.
The Ten Commandments and Jesus’s Beatitudes & “Golden Rule” (treating/loving others as you’d want to be treated/loved) are the core of how to live as Christians. They sound easy enough to follow, but we all know that doing the right thing is sometimes the harder choice to make. My comment, like your podcast, doesn’t do justice to the vastness of this topic. It would be incredible if you could host a podcast with “experts” from various disciplines and religions.

This reminds me of the conversation I have with my friends (some are of many different religions, and some like myself an atheist) in the middle of the night. I feel that the world would a great place if there were more people who were willing to learn about others experiences and have a nice intellectual conversation on topics that are seen today as controversial. I just wanted to share some thoughts I had as someone interested in theology and philosophy (I am a Christian myself and plan to study these subjects further in uni.)
On the question of free will -
I do affirm free will (Christian views on the matter vary a lot from total free will to no free will)
Relating to God's foreknowledge, to keep it as simple as I can, God's knowledge doesn't dictate what happens so much as what happens dictates what God knows. Because that's what it is, knowledge. God isn't sitting in the past knowing what's ahead undeniably, but rather exists outside of time (in a present tense sorta way) knowing all the past and seeing the whole present and future (knowing all possibilities) - by our free will we actualize our own actions, this extends to beliefs. I wasn't born a Christian, but chose to become one. (Think Nature vs Nurture). So bad people are born with choice laid before them and they choose their path apart from the laws God has for how we are to live.
(I hope this wasn't to much big heady philosophy - I just have looked into this a lot. Like A LOT.)
And really quick (since you touched on a lot of things) how do we know Christianity is true as opposed to any other belief system?
Simple answer: Historical Evidence that Jesus rose from the dead. (Which would verify His claims, such as claims to be divine, etc.)

I once asked a friend about a religion within the branch of christianity and he dismissed it saying to not bother looking into them because "they're all going to hell." I don't talk to the friend anymore because the ignorance really bothered me.

Very interesting video! To add to the discussion (I'm a Muslim btw):
1) the presence of God or the need of His presence (my own point of view) : we exist therefore there was something before us. when we go back billions of years to the beginning of the universe as we know it, we have 2 options for how it was made into being: first is some entity or being created it, and second it just existed. The second option would mean that the universe has been there since forever (actually forever) and it has laws and ways to express those laws (basically physical laws and mathematics that quantify the physics). These laws are consistent and have permanence and persistency. How can these laws have been chosen? If you say by pure chance, then what was the mechanism that they were 'set in stone' so to speak, what rules were there to finally make them the laws of the universe? And it would be impossible for them to be chosen like this without a willful force to make these laws come into existence. That would necessitate that a being with the ability to choose willfully had the ability to implement these rules and laws. Therefore it is impossible for the option that the universe had these laws from nothing or randomly. Therefore the first option of there being a creator of some sorts is what makes more sense by exclusion. One would say, "ok then, who created the creator, and what were the rules imposed upon him then?" Due to it being impossible for the universe to have laws from nothing, that would necessitate the presence of an entity that can create rules and is not restricted by any. How is that even possible, I have no idea, and I believe it is something very difficult for humans to comprehend but it is the only logical choice of the too.
2) the "will of God" : in Islam, the will of God is meant to be that he knows how we will act and not that he imposed that on us. For example, if you bring pure water at sea level and heat it up to 100 degrees Celsius, then you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it will boil. That is the same for god's knowledge, it is all knowing and is only there to act like a documentary. And then a question pops up that if God created us while he knows what we are going to do, then wouldn't it be ridiculous to have him judge the nonbelievers for nonbelieving? In Islam, God does not punish nonbelievers who have not encountered the word of truth in its rightful form or at least in a good enough way to warrant more research into it. Only those who have heard it and knew within themselves beyond a doubt that this is the truth and then still CHOSE to not follow are the ones god punishes. Key word is choosing. Then why would god punish anyone if he put that ability to choose not to follow in humans? I don't have an answer to that.
On 1)
You ask what set these rules and laws in stone. Nothing needs to, these are not rules and laws created by the government, they are scientific rules and laws, they have no origin they are just descriptions on how we observe things function and interact in the universe.
You say the origin of the laws of the universe cant be explained, therefore there must be a god. But then you cant explain how he got there and what created his rules.
All you are doing is adding an extra step in your head before you get to a point with no answer. Claiming its "the only logical choice".
It comes down to a choice between the universe has always been or god has always been.
Tommy Adamopoulos that's the question, what set the rules of how matter interacts, why do negative and positive particles attract (to put it simply), why does heat move to less hot areas, why does an atom behave the way it does? What is the origin of these rules? How were they set or "chosen" the way they are now? Why weren't there different rules set in this universe? If it was just set randomly, then how were they selected in the end? For brevity I didn't include all this in the original comment
with regards to Ryan’s multiple questions of “how do you know” - there’s one particular thing that the discussion missed out, and that is Christianity is the only religion that which God wants a relationship with His creation. So how do we know about this and that, it’s because we build a relationship with God, get to know Him and therefore we know that we have free will and we know that we can make choices because it’s His design. We choose to be good because we know that that is what God wants for us to choose. And because of this relationship that we have built, we want to honour that.
How do you trust the bible that is written by many different scholars to be God’s word? Granted that there are many versions and that it was written by man, there is one common thread - everything that is written in the bible, points to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It all points back to God.
We can always try to reason things out and understand things, and that is totally healthy. But we will all come to a point where our answers can’t be answered, and then we will have to go by FAITH. And it’s a choice whether you want to go by faith to believe or not. The fact that you’re asking these questions, describes free will. You’re asking them out of your own choice.
Whether we go to hell or not, it’s totally up to God to judge and decide. Based on God’s character, He judges with love, He shows grace and mercy, and He is full of patience, He feels our pain, and He feels pain for those who have gone astray and choose to walk away from Him, because after all, He created them who are His children. So He judges based on the life of the individual, how they lived it, how their heart was, etc.
So to have a better understanding it’s best to just step into it and experience Him and his love. I hope you do!
how is getting to know God concludes we have free will? if his deign makes us choices, why would he design a choice that would end up getting further from him? for example, you are in a bus with 5 kids and the bus' breaks broke down and in front of the road are 2 cancer survivors without any chance of escaping, your choice is to spare the kid's life and save the cancer survivors or the other way around? in the scenario expect that there is no other way to choose. His design is to make a choice where we end up nothing but sin. how is the concept of good in what God wants us to choose from? if you would ask that why did you chose to be in that scenario in the first place? my reply would be well who's design made me choose among its choices?. my point is that there is no point in free will if we would still end up carrying the heavier weight for the sake of building a relationship with God? you may say, when you have a good relationship God, all those weights will be gone. but why bother existentially living a life with having a choice but still chooses the heavier consequence that may or may not even actually exist in the first place (the concept of good and evil) just for the sake of believing that building a relationship with God will solve the problem of dilemma?

What I mean by that is regardless of what the road may look like with him, we would still choose it because we love him. In the bible many of the apostles experienced persecution. Even currently in China some are put to death for following God. But for them and many others a life worth God in it is worth risking their lives for. Also God has always given us free will. We can choose to obey or not to. Look at Adam and Eve they both willingly ate of the forbidden tree and that is how sin entered the world. God desires for us to choose him he doesn't force. I’ve been listening to the podcasts since the beginning and watching Ryan for who knows how long now, I think this is by far one of my favorite podcasts yet! I love how they can talk about “touchy” subjects and not get upset. To be able to talk about your beliefs and not always believing the same thing can get tricky but I love the dynamic that these guys have and being open about it! I am completely with David, we can never stop growing and learning about what we believe in!
