Sigma 14mm f1.8 ART review - Best lens for astrophotography?

- In this video i review the new Sigma 14mm art lens. I found this lens to be well built, and a light gathering machine. The coma distortion was present, but not as bad as other fast primes. aka sigma 20mm, the sigma 24mm, canon 24mm etc. This lens in my mind has now become the king of the hill in regards to best lenses for astrophotography / nightscapes.
If you buy at Hunts Camera and use this link, they have given my viewers 10% off on sigma lenses! www.huntsphoto...
I rented this lens at www.brentrentslenses.com
Well done Nick, love it when photographers enjoy their photography so much as you obviously do. Enthusiasm is contagious. 📸👏
I'm here just to compliment on the awesome models on all of these shots :)
Thanks a lot for this video Nick! I was curious about the ufo-stars on my images. A quick google search lead me to your video! Glad to see we're in the same boat lol.
Ok see you soon :)
THIS is why I follow your work. Awesome video.
Great video as usual! Especially the start of the video... It was so crispy! Take care!
Thank you, sir, for your excellent review and the personal thoughts you shared with us! Wishing you all the best! Stay safe and healthy! Best regards from Sweden!
Great lens and good review! If only I could afford it. But I find it weird that you try to evaluate the sharpness by looking at pics taken with minimum or maximum aperture. At f16 you probably had a lot of diffraction already. I know you said the photos weren't meant for a test, but if you had shot at 5.6 or 8, it probably would've been way sharper. And you were doing a focus stack anyway, so no need to go to f16. Or am I overlooking something? Love your channel and photos btw.
Great review. Thanks for taking the time to help us out. I appreciate it!
I've been waiting for this review :-)
Thank you for this review! I really appreciate your work.
Awsome video. Would love to see more on the 14mm lens and your technique on using it 👍🏽
The crazy high ISO setting you are using with a 1.8 lense and strong aurora are your problem here. Soo much noise being added unfortunately. You live and you learn though :)
Great review Nick, I’m so pleased that you are posting again and I hope this means that things are a little more settled for you on a personal front.
Sigma are now making some seriously good glass aren’t they, I have the 24-105 and the 50mm Art lenses and am really pleased with them. This 14mm is one big chunk of glass and the IQ of your images is excellent.
Will you be posting anything from the Out of Acadia event?
Take care mate. 🍀👌
Try the Samyang XP 14mm f2.4, at around half the price of the Sigma it is amazing. Whilst manual focus and slightly slower it shows almost no coma, and is so sharp. It completely blows the Samyang 14mm f2.8 away. Yes I get the price difference but for edge to edge sharpness it's amazing.
Hi Nick. Personally the coma does not worry me. As you know a lot of astronomical gear will display this feature and I think observers accept it in modetate amounts, even expect it. What is 'moderate'? Well, as you say, up to the observer! I can't sensibly comment on ISO settings when watching images on UA-cam - need a nice large high quality print to do that. Bob.
Hi Nick. Thanx for the test. Loved it. One question, why did you use f/16 for the test with the focustack? I am thinking that the Sigma could have a fall off issue with the high f/stop you used. Maybe you would have had a better result in the corners with f/11 or f/8 and a shorter shutterspeed? I totally agree that the coma is not as bad as it is with the Sigma 20 mm f/1.4.
Amazing photos! 🙌
Btw, Coma is not a distortion, but an optical lens aberration.
Also, what you see there is likely saggital astigmatism, not coma I believe, which is another form of lens aberration.
Distortion is a lens aberration, just like coma, astigmatism, chromatic aberration are other form of lens aberrations (deviations from the perfect rectilinear projection)
Nice Review Nick, I am curious about the " soft corners" how far away was the foreground from the lens?
Great review,excellent lens!
Nice photos...hope you had fun in Iceland..
177 likes and no dislikes ; great !
super-awesome review Man
Well done and think you. Valuable information.
Nice beard dude. I've been growing mine for 3 or 4 years now. Can't remember haha. Thinking of getting the Sigma 16 f1.4 for my Sony. Thoughts? Think it will be similar to this 14?
After 6 years, would you choose the Sigma 14mm f1.8 ART or the Sigma 20mm f1.4 ART on a Canon R6 Mark ii for Milky Way and Aurora photography? BTW: Both are discontinued for the Canon EF mount. I might have to buy used.
Great review BTW!
Personally, I would choose the 14, I actually just bought my second copy last month! Right now it’s the best Astro lens in the canon system
Very informative and great review.
Great review and yes I’m addicted to ultra wide angle and roll with the Tamron 15-30 an awesome lens, the only downfall of these bulbous lenses is having to buy specialist filter holders and filters which can cost as much as the lens itself.
You must be a fellow New Englander if you're shopping at Hunt's. Love that store! Great review!
I’m actually at West Coast guy but I met the people over at hunts when I went to Maine this year super nice people over there
Ahhh ok lol!! 😊 Yes the people at Hunt’s are very nice. 🤓
Good review, pretty much what everyone else is saying too. For the price I was expecting better quality. I have a loathing for coma so by the time you stop down to solve that issue you may as well get something that is less than half the cost and one third the weight. Check out the Irix 15mm f2.4 and save some cash.
G.day Nick, I agree with Ryan. For that price one would expect much better results in the corners. To compensate the "ufo" effects, stacking is an option BUT why pay all that money when stacking would also fix the Rokinon sesult at 1/3rd the cost. Still love ya reviews brother, just thinking out loud again.
Hey Nick!
Did you had any issues with corner sharpness loss in occasions as this phenomenon was mentioned by Photogprahylife? Maybe it is a Nikon issue. Long story short sometimes the lens does create superb central sharpness but the corners fall of drastically. If you are not paying attention it can pretty much ruin the photos. This is a pretty expensive lens and I am considering buying it mostly for astro landscapes. Would be a bummer to deal with this focusing issue. Especially in the night.
Thanks for the feedback.
Your Aurora shots are blown out by the high ISO. The fastest lens I use for the lights is an F 1.4. Depending on the storm I can shoot as low a 4-5 seconds at ISO 800 and not be blown out. Just check my Time lapses on my channel.
Hi this is a follower from the future. Did you ever use that on the sony body? Contemplating picking one up for the r3 and s3
Thank you.
Adding a Speedbooster for adaptation to the M43 system, do you think this lens would be a good choice for astro-photography?
Nick, I have that Sigma currently testing it against the Loawa 15mm Zero D F2. Both have their strong pros and cons. What’s your thoughts on the Loawa 15mm, considering if you have had the opportunity to shoot it. Thanks! Chad
Very expensive lens. I was thinking about the 20mm but am not sure now.. What is best focal-lenght for astro-imaging; 14mm, 20mm or 24mm Rokinon ?
I just bought a canon 5D Mark II and the 20 mm f/1.4. The 14 mm f/1.8 costs almost 2000 USD in Iceland (is it worth it ?)..Is the 14 mm useful for anything except wide angle astro or landscape ?
Any comments on focus breathing in the stacked photos?
Have you used the canon 11-24? How does it stack up to it on the edges?
But why did You use such high iso ? I did all my aurora between 1000/2500 ...
Andrea Ossola , I assume because auroras move. See 2:30 in the video.
OK found different situation, I cannot keep many photo with such high Iso. I guess his camera do. ;)
I agree. That's insane ISO
I shot it like a north America guy... wrong lol in hindsight I went in expecting to need more iso to get the job done than I needed to, BUT shooting with a high iso allowed me to have more shadow detail than had I shot at 2000-3200 iso
You said the lens only goes as far as f16 but on one of the landscape shots you mention f8?
Hi! Have you tried the Laowa 15mm f2 and if you have, how does it compare to the Sigma?
I havn't, but I need to!
You have the Canon 14mm dont you Nick? would be keen to see a comparison review, I have the Canon 14mm and love it, it is soft on the edges and is a little slow for night stuff at 2.8 (when you have f1.4, 1.8 lenses available)
Michael Vettas how do you like the canon for Astro? I’m torn between the sigma and the canon. Really not sure what to do. I can find the canon used around the same price as the sigma so the price is not a factor for me. What are your thoughts? A lot of coma with the canon?
What lens did you shoot this video with?
Can the sigma 14mm f1.8 mount the Canon T8i or Canon 90D? Also is it able to take timelapse of Milky way or even a picture of Orion?
yes it can, although it will be closer to a 20mm equivalent. but the nice thing is it will be a lens that will grow with you and mount up to any future full frame cameras you might own.
Nick Page What do you think about the Sony A7 iii mounted with Sigma 14-24 mm f/2.8 or mounted with Sony FE 24mm F1.4?
CelebrityLyrics The Sony 24 mm is an incredible lens that’s the one I ended up purchasing. It is amazing for Acero although it does leave you wishing for a slightly wider field of view
Using a full frame camera ??
If he's shooting at f/4 or less, then why not go with a Tamron 15-30 or a Roki lens?
F4 not for northern lights.
Hi Nick, I have the Sony A7 iii, for my first Astro lens would you go wit the sigma 14 or the Sony FE 16-35 2.8 GM?
Scott Schneider , is you can only have one wide lens, then I wouldn’t go for the Sigma. It’s a great lens, but your stuck at 14mm. I have the 16-35 GMaster as you ask about, that’s a sick lens and I would go with that one. I would get big that Nick would say the same thing.
Thanks for a great review! What is the best solution for filters for the 14mm?
Mattias Marklund I don’t think there’s any lol.
Aren't there some LEE or NiSi filters that would fit? Or a rear filter holder?
Will check!
A stpud question here, why not use the Canon 24mm f1.8 with a 5d Mk4?. The lens is a bargain and lets in so much light.
2:50 Compton?
How about some likes for this amazing video!
I don't think this lens is worth $1,100 more than the good copy Roki/Samy 14mm F/2.8
I love the Samyang 14mm 2.8. Been using it for a few months now, and it's great value for money!
The 14mm f2.8 is not as sharp, made of plastic, flares wildly, and has noticeable and hard-to-correct distortion. So, is the sigma worth the extra $1100? I would say yes, but probably not if you find the Sammy suitable for your uses. For me personally, I like having the sun in my compositions, so the flare performance was a big winner, and like having the option of f1.8 for astro to capture as much detail as possible.
At $1,600, "great value for the money"? I'm not so sure that statement is correct.
Ah...yeah. If you're using it for daytime, definitely go with the Sigma over the Sammy. Not sure the distortion is hard to correct when it can be corrected with a single click of the button in Lightroom.
yeah I think the value comes in for all those other things.. like auto focus, overall sharpness, extra light gathering. The samy/rok is a great value for what it is.. but not as well rounded. Its totally a budget thing some people will pay more for that 25% extra features
Why do you focus stack at f/16?
+Mario Brunettin because when your inches from your foreground you can’t get it all sharp without focus stacking
Try out focus stacking Mario youdbe amazed.
Is it me or sound of ur this video is kinda noisy ...
Good pictures, but dang that lens is just way too much money....
Hmmm...well darn. Kinda dissapointing. Thats too bad. I had huge hopes for this lens and for the high price I did expect better.
Prices high
First
I assume that is a really good lens but is not like game changer.I'm using my Samyang 14mm 2.8 for a long time and costs 250 pounds...This one cost 5 times more but is not 5 times better...Obviously if you have the money does'n matter but again...
being able to lower your iso over a stop is a pretty big deal, I agree the Samyang is a great budget lens for sure, but for those looking for something better I think this is the next level up.
Nick Page One stop it is a huge deal but this applies only to astrophotography . If you going to use 14mm on Real Estate or Architecture photography you will never shoot below F8 anyway.
Good review Nick
If you put in Irix 15 2.4 at $400 ... Things get even more interesting
Nick Page Sigma is indeed a game changer, f1.8 once was impossible to achieve but Sigma managed to make a stellar n rare lens ...
If it was easy to do, everyone would have done that ... Great review indeed
Bill Zidis I shoot landscape , wildlife and occasionally sports, I use f2 and f2.8 on my lens a huge amount of the time of course When the light is low. Your comment about “you will never use anything is less than f8” is way way off
Well done Nick, love it when photographers enjoy their photography so much as you obviously do. Enthusiasm is contagious. 📸👏
