Amazing, 4000 hit here in Montreal, 4,256 all time, never stopped!! Got the "Charlie Hustle" nickname from Mickey Mantle as a young rookie. If you are a baseball purest & love this game, you take 2 things away from this clip- Pete Rose undoubtedly deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, & Baseball needs to be back in Montreal!!!

Ichiro was the first player ever to have 200 hits for 10 straight seasons. The 200-hit season is hardly a thing of the past. Twenty-game winners for pitchers? Now that's a different story. He's not the greatest hitter of all time. He played long enough to climb a leader-board. He played in 3,562 games. 527 more games than Ty Cobb (and over 250 more games than 2nd place of most games played) yet only has 67 more hits than Cobb. Something Cobb probably would have gotten in another 50 games tops. Rose's career batting average sits at 179th of all time (.303), an entire .063 below Cobb. Rose only led the NL in batting average 3 times in his 24 year career (Cobb had 12 batting titles for reference), with a career best of .348 (Cobb had 16 seasons batting better than .348, including 3 seasons over .400. Ted Williams also had 3 seasons over .400 and 7 seasons over .348) Rose also never exceeded 16 HRs in a season so it's not like he blended any power into his game either. Ted Williams hit AT LEAST 23 HRs in every season he played at least most of the season besides his last when he was 40 years old. He had 30+ HR seasons 8 times. Rose had 9 seasons of 200+ hits which is great, but something Ichiro surpassed in just his first 10 years of playing MLB.
Rose was great, no doubt but his longevity is more impressive than any metric of his hitting and if every player could somehow play 3,500 games he wouldn't be anywhere close to the top of any leaderboard.

Duke Snider mentions at 5:00 that Rose's 4000th hit was also his 1000th extra-base hit. I had never heard that before.

Nothing against the Expos, but the Pete Rose 4000th hit would have been so much better had Pete gotten it as a Red or Philly.

I wonder how Rose felt when he hit 4000 career hit infront of his ex-teammate specially Mike Schmidt?

So 25 percent of Pete Rose's hits were for extra bases? That's pretty good...or is that "normal"?

Saw the Expos first game vs the Mets and watched through the years till the end, which should never have come. Most people don't know that the Expos had one of the best organizations in baseball for years. That's Montreal and all their minor clubs. Every time I see a video of the Expos, it makes me miss them even more. I liked how players could be traded wherever in the old days. The guys hustled the butts off and weren't paid millions. The players today get a bad back as soon as they sign a huge contract. Their wallets can't carry millions. Still a great game, baseball is. Buy the Rays and get them out of TB. Put them in the big O for a couple of years while a new stadium is being built. If my memory is not completely shocked, I remember the Expos playing a game or two in Winnipeg and in Vancouver. Also many games in Puerto Rico near the end. Miss the Boys of Montreal. There were many stars through the years for Montreal.

Pete got his hit and the cameras and broadcasters did not even acknowledge that Charlie Lea advanced to third (or scored). I'm watching and waiting to look for a score or a glance at both runners and I don't see an update. Finally, following Raines' looping hit the cameras showed both Lea and Rose on the base paths. They apparently all were star struck by Rose, the greatest competitor in baseball history. Only 192 more hits to eclipse Cobb! Go Reds!

I understand the concept. He broke the golden rule. And I don't think only good players should be forgiven and not so good shouldn't. I disagree with the severity of the punishment for one thing and another is it is different,no matter what anyone says. Betting on your team to win is a lot different than betting on them to lose and throw the game. Which he did not do.

It's so weird to see Jerry Koosman as a Phillie and Pete Rose as an Expo. It's like a bizarro game from another dimension.
And then the whole thing was so low key. My God, the guy just reached 4000 hits. Now they would stop the game and have a small acknowledgement or something.
