- In this video, I review a F36 BMW 440i Gran Coupe that has a stage 1 map (MHD Tuning) as well as a stage 3 gearbox map that can be taken off in a few minutes which means we're able to see the difference between factory and the map.
This car shares it's engine with the marvelous M140i yet lacks the "M" performance badge at the back of the car and we're going to find out if it deserves it or not and how much difference the map can make.

Both excellent engines. You can get 40mpg out the 40i and close to 60mpg out of the 35d. Personally, it comes down to how many miles you do and the pur of a petrol engine matters to you. I'd go with the 40i but I can't discredit the 35d. I've reviewed a 335d which I think you should check out

You’re forgetting one thing. It’s called MPPSK and it completely changes the car. With that package I’ve seen the car dyno at 370WHP. Let alone the fact that BMW under values it’s engines
I think that's a choice that's beneficial for the first owner. For the first few years whilst the car is under warranty, that's your only option of a tune without invalidating it.
After that period, I say screw it and do whatever tune you want which is what this owner's done! As the MHD tune can be taken off and on, it wouldn't have been an issue with BMW apparently

Glad you liked the video! I think it handles really well. The map doesn't affect suspension or handling so it's pretty good out of the factory. It's definitely an M Lite standard in that aspect out of the box as long as you don't go beyond 400/450BHP I'd say
I looked forever at m135i's, m140i's, 335i, 435i, 340i and 440i. Decided I wanted that b58 after everything i read and heard, and ended up with a 2016 440i Gran Coupé. Something about the speed figures of the m240i attracted me, but no matter how much faster it was, I could not like the looks. To me, the 3 and 4 series look so much more mature and balanced. I find it a quick car, completely stock, but I always wondered how it would make people who daily a m135i or m140i feel, especially because it's heavier. And i'm glad to find out, it puts just as much of a smile on his face. I agree with you, it being a 40i it should've just had the 340bhp, 500Nm like the m240i..
Hey Arno, I reviewed my M135i against an M140i and concluded my feelings about N55 vs B58 in that video. Please check it out if you're interested.
The B58 is definitely worth the money as it's not just a facelift, you're getting a better engine but the extra premium may be out of budget for some people so there's an audience for both.
The M235i/240i looks slightly off to me too. Maybe the short wheel base and the 18 inch wheels don't do it for me but no one can dispute the power and with some mods, it can look like a stunner.
The 340/440 are good buys but they're very underpowered from factory and they're not M Lites because BMW didn't want to for some reason because they're definitely capable! I'm glad you're enjoying your 440 and no doubt it's an amazing piece of kit
@@CarNitty I'm very happy I went with the B58. I also just prefer the sound/looks of the saying "440i" over "435i" ;) as for the 2 series: I think the boot area, wheel base and 18 inchers are indeed what do it wrong. I much prefer the 1 series looks over the 2 series. As for my car not being an M-lite: I don't really care about that. I just feel like 340 or even 360bhp is a lovely number for this car. Nothing a stage 1 can't fix ;) I absolutely dream of the newer m340i with MPE though...
Sound is subjective but the LCI F3x are a lot more attractive than the pre-LCI for sure. I don't care about the badging as such either to be fair as those who know, will know if a force to be reckoned with.
I agree about your comment about the 2 Series. The 1 Series coupe looked better than a 1 series hatchback but for the F2x, the 2 Series isn't aggressive enough. Probably due to the M2 bring an option
I also got a 440i coupe! Saving up to get BM3 at the moment.
Awesome car as a base platform and once you map it, they're an actual M Lite if you ask me!

440i coupe is for me, the best bimmer out there apart from the m cars. Perfect size, excellent engine.
The 440i is a very good choice regardless of how many doors. Anything with the B58 is but it feels restricted so I highly suggest a tune to make it the car it should have been from factory!

Absolutely bang on - well said sir. As a 340i owner the 3/4/5(?) series detuned B58 always stuck in my craw. Yes we have the MPPSK, but at a $$$ premium!
Glad to hear your thoughts as a 340i owner! Very annoying that BMW did this to these cars as they're running well under potential!
You ask why BMW limited the 440i. I may have a theory. I think the target audience for this car is business people that want a car that's also a bit sporty. Those are the same kind of people that will look at the specs and go "oh, 400bhp, I don't need that". Thus, might make sense for BMW to limit it, knowing full well that enthusiasts can easily do stage mods.
I think BMW experimented with the M Lite brand with the M135i/M235i which later became the M235i/M240i and saw the reception was good then in the Gx-Series platform, decided to do it for every single model up to the X7 M50d. Audi have had the S range for over 2 decades which is proof in the pudding and Mercedes also followed BMW in creating their brand of baby AMG's (35/43/53/ and it's a model that works as not everyone can afford the full fat car so these mid cars are budget friendly yet give us average Joe's a thrill

I’m gonna just badge mine with the m440i from the new 2021 bmw . Or should I just debadge completely?
Very bold move but if you're doing it, i have two things to note.
1) Be prepared for people to talk crap but that being said, I hope you're running Stage 1 at least show your car isn't a slouch.
2) Don't use the new M440i badge as it's a different font and style. Instead, buy 2x F-Series M140i badges and use it to make M440i in the correct font and style for F-Series M Lite!

The day itself was around 26 degress celcius. We didn't run AC or have windows down initially so the car must've been 30 degrees +
