    I used to live in S.A. 1982 -2002. I have been living back in the UK now for the last 21 years.. I really, really miss those days of having a braai and with friends and family. Every family brought their own bowl of salad. I still have braais with my parents and my kids but this only happens when the sun shines. It's just not the same.. It doesn't help that I no longer have a South African husband to do the cooking.. he was an excellent braaier. I still make pap n sous every now and again but I have to order it online and it is quite expensive. I am glad I got to experience the South African lifestyle. Africa will always be in my heart.

    Thank you so so much for this. I just bought my house in The Netherlands and I will build a braai probably in the next two weeks. This has been so helpful. I can not do it then you have to be my contractors hahaha. Thanks my Chinas.

    Nice maths lesson. Builders around the world will measure diagonally (your "r") and if both are equal to each other they know they are square.

    I live in Delft Holland , and tried to braai, the police showed up at my door and said you can not use wood only gas, I was bummed but I understand the police said I am no longer in Africa, I think someone complained about the smoke.

    Turkish shops sells nice lamb, but where are the preparation area? And we also miss the hokkie for placing the braai-wood to dry? For the rest it's not a bad effort :-)

    • @leighdaykin973
      @leighdaykin973  2 роки тому

      Yip - we have discovered the Turkish butchers :). As for braai wood, we have a 'schuur' (very large wendy house) where we stack our wood and keep it dry. As for prep area... yes, that was a definite oversight. We have to put a small table next to braai for this. Also do most of the prep in the kitchen and then carry out. Guess we were just so excited to get a functional braai that we overlooked the nice-to-haves :)

    Would have been great to have done a video instead of pictures... To show a person how you did it exactly. Never the less it's a great post

    I reckon you have piqued the interest of these Dutchmen! Braai AND springbokkies - what a culture shock to them, hey???
    So the next step would be to show them what biltong & koesusters are!!!

    how to build a braai with Pythagoras - just a tad complicated, don't you think ?

    • @leighdaykin973
      @leighdaykin973  2 роки тому

      Hi... I am an engineer (NOT civil tho ;) )... so can't resist the urge to bring in the tech stuff ;) Prob a far more simple, practical way that builders use to ensure squareness. But this was the only way us newbies could think of.

    Well done ladies! We’re moving to The Netherlands in May... and I’ll be damned if I cannot do a braai at least one every fortnight. Just 2 questions... Is it legal to braai with wood essentially making an open fire like that in The Netherlands? Secondly, where did you get the wood to braai with in The Netherlands?

    • @beun2198
      @beun2198 4 роки тому

      You can make a fire on your own property and you can buy wood in stores or at wood dealers

    • @leighdaykin973
      @leighdaykin973  2 роки тому

      Very late reply... but yes, u r allowed to burn an open fire with wood - some other substances not allowed. So you have now been in NL for a while - how is it going? :)

    where did you get you're info from????????

    • @leighdaykin973
      @leighdaykin973  2 роки тому

      We were total building newbies... so from online research, a bit of knowledge of maths, but mostly we learned on the job! Methods and info may not be of professional standard.... but we just explained what worked for us... to help other newbies :). As for design drawings - I designed it using free drafting software I downloaded.

    Awesome braai. Nicely done ladies.
    No lamb. What a pity. That's something I experienced while living abroad in Japan as well. They're not big on lamb there either.

    • @leighdaykin973

      Turkish butchers supply lamb... and GOOD lamb. I once bought lamb chops from AH for the braai (one pack was randomly available for sale - not often u see it in AH). Everybody at the braai spat them out! I was horrified!... until I tasted them - terrible. Butcher the only decent option.

    Jesus christ are you building a house or a braai. That is the thickest foundation I have ever seen for a braai
