John, I wrote some comments and re-read your article on whether Christ’s death indicates our worth but had a rethink. I see the situation with sinners as a Picasso in a dumpster and Christ’s use of coins in Luke 15 and Mark 2:17 as indicating a value to God (that ‘survived’ the fall - and can co-exist with the category of ‘fully lost’) rather than a potential value in a future state (only). I agree that a Picasso in a dumpster is worse than a banana peel in a dumpster but I draw different conclusions about how moral demerit and value deriving from being created in God’s image interact-to both of us it’s a horrible thing to do to a Picasso but after that we possibly differ on whether there’s something ‘worth’ saving (to Picasso!) I’m reading “Think” right now. I hope my comments are not presumptive and unhelpful. I once commented that John Mcarthur was expecting the Holy Spirit to sanctify “covertly”… maybe I’m a crank. All the best. When I think about whether the painting in the dumpster has become ‘worse’ than ‘worthless’ (that kind of phrasing) I notice immediately that the two terms conflate assessments of ‘worth’ (in the sense of created value) and ‘worthiness’ (in relation to moral demerit). Does the bible conflate or treat as equivalent the two-at least the lost coin seems to hold them separately… I don’t see that as ‘depravity, light’… all of this seems to impact on questions like, “Did God make me unique? Does he like my personality?” (David, so different from Paul…). Did He create anything He wants to not change/improve, etc. The informal answer is, “God loves you, you’re an original!” Be yourself because everyone else is taken (that’s Wilde not Jesus… I know!). The formal theological defence of that informal sermon though seems to be a blank-absence. But you look at a Sproul and go: He became more himself as he became totally Yours. I suspect the way the image of God is unalienable to us (rather than destructible by us) is what makes sin tragic. For God so loved the world, then, means, in part, He likes me. He wants me. He has loved me with an everlasting love.

John, I wrote some comments and re-read your article on whether Christ’s death indicates our worth but had a rethink. I see the situation with sinners as a Picasso in a dumpster and Christ’s use of coins in Luke 15 and Mark 2:17 as indicating a value to God (that ‘survived’ the fall - and can co-exist with the category of ‘fully lost’) rather than a potential value in a future state (only). I agree that a Picasso in a dumpster is worse than a banana peel in a dumpster but I draw different conclusions about how moral demerit and value deriving from being created in God’s image interact-to both of us it’s a horrible thing to do to a Picasso but after that we possibly differ on whether there’s something ‘worth’ saving (to Picasso!)
I’m reading “Think” right now. I hope my comments are not presumptive and unhelpful. I once commented that John Mcarthur was expecting the Holy Spirit to sanctify “covertly”… maybe I’m a crank. All the best.
When I think about whether the painting in the dumpster has become ‘worse’ than ‘worthless’ (that kind of phrasing) I notice immediately that the two terms conflate assessments of ‘worth’ (in the sense of created value) and ‘worthiness’ (in relation to moral demerit). Does the bible conflate or treat as equivalent the two-at least the lost coin seems to hold them separately… I don’t see that as ‘depravity, light’… all of this seems to impact on questions like, “Did God make me unique? Does he like my personality?” (David, so different from Paul…). Did He create anything He wants to not change/improve, etc. The informal answer is, “God loves you, you’re an original!” Be yourself because everyone else is taken (that’s Wilde not Jesus… I know!). The formal theological defence of that informal sermon though seems to be a blank-absence. But you look at a Sproul and go: He became more himself as he became totally Yours. I suspect the way the image of God is unalienable to us (rather than destructible by us) is what makes sin tragic.
For God so loved the world, then, means, in part, He likes me. He wants me. He has loved me with an everlasting love.

53 and coming out of the tombs after his(Jesus') resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 When the certurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, " Truly this was the Son( Jesus) of God! "
