  • It happens more than you think. As the weather starts to get colder, furry friends often look to make your car a home - or worse - they might even make your car a meal. Consumer Reports explains.

My Toyota 4Runner is in the shop having entire main wire harness and transmission wiring harness as well as ABS and air bag sensors replaced - too far shredded to be repaired. This was done over a weekend and the bill for parts and labor is $3500 - thank goodness I have comprehensive insurance which covers all but $50 of it. Her rodents in Detroit are slackers compared to mine on the other side of the state. I am going to spray the engine compartment with oil of peppermint and isopropyl alcohol after I wrap all wires and most hoses with anti-rodent capsaicin tape. BTW: The same tape from the same Japanese company who makes Honda's $45 tape (Taraoka Tape) is available on Amazon for $29 as Mouse Blocker Anti-Rodent Tape.

We have the same problem in our neighborhood. Two neighbors have spent literally thousands on auto wiring, hose, and line repairs. While I have damage to my deck and vinyl siding, my car and boat have not been bothered. Another neighbor dumps corn in his driveway for the squirrels. He has been asked to stop, but he continues to do so out of spite. I know we would have squirrels anyway, but we wonder if feeding them keeps the population larger than normal.

1 1/2 months ago a squirrel made a nest in my engine bay. Had to get towed costed $600 for repairs. Mecganic told me to put fabric softener sheets under the hood
It happened again. The squirrel used fabric sheets to build it's nest. I like the idea of mesh. Won't cause a heat circulation problem.

Happened twice within the last year to our 2012 Rav4. Not in Detroit, but Buffalo NY. I'm desperate to find a fix that doesn't involve our car being in the shop for months waiting on a new engine wiring harness! I'm looking into peppermint repellent spray and that Honda rat repellent tape.

I have a 2010 Lexus & they started eating my wires the earlier part of this year. Then again about 2 weeks ago. Thank goodness I only have to pay my insurance deductible but it’s a pain

I'm starting to think they have a hankering for Toyota's. They did a number on my husbands Toyota Tundra truck. Tore the sponge insulation out from under the hood and ate through the wires that operate his snow plow.

My F150 just cost me $2000.00 because the rodents chewed the fuel injection harness.
I leave the hood open, put down traps, spearmint oil. They got me anyway….

It just happen to two of my new 2019 Honda Accords this is all a set up by the wires being made out of soybean so the rats could eat them in the people have to take the cats in to the dealer... this should be cover by the dealers charging $700 for two wires I could have repair my self. Crazy..

Both manufacturers are liers, they know the soy bean wiring is food and us attractive as peanut butter to the mice and rats.
Make car wiring out of food, what could go wrong?
It can end up costing you the cost of a vehicle twice. Rick Gore from the Good luck America channel had to take his truck in twice in one week, the cost $3000 and has they hit the big loam too, that would be another 8k, so as you can see, this adds up fast. Of course, you know they used the same food wiring again.
