Good to see another Aussie artist on your channel 🙂 This version of Girls on The Avenue is slower than the original, less energetic & the vocals aren't as good IMO. Was good to see him do live vocals on Capricorn Dancer though; most artists on Countdown mimed their songs.
Agreed
I think these performance didn’t do justice to the songs, recorded versions are a bit better
Yep,agreed.
Cool - This is Chris who pulled this out of the bag. We had never heard him before. I now have named my Minivan Capricorn Dancer - Cheers Alex
OMG. Countdown!! The most iconic Australian music show of all time! My entire childhood was affected by this show!! Molly!! would give all Aussie groups a go. And all the overseas bands would appear on the show too!! Um.. the clapping and the arm waves were an iconic part of Countdown!!
I would have slapped them! Cheers Alex
Can I recommend you watch Richard Clapton with barnesy singing ‘I am an island’ live from clapton’s ‘best years of our lives’ concert, guaranteed it will blow your minds!!
One of those occasions when the studio versions are twice as good as the live performance. Great songs.
Richard Clapton had so many great songs. "Deep water" would have to be my favourite. And there is a live version with Jimmy Barnes on backing vocals. So glad you found him.
Australia is truly blessed when it comes to music. And I'm so happy that the rest of the world get to enjoy it too. Better late than never I say. Thanks Gents. Love your work 👍
Ohhh will that make the curated week?
@@TheThamesmen Deep water is a classic song, so hope it does.
Yes, yes, yes. That version is a rock triumph. A band made up of members of INXS, Venetta Fields and Mr Barnes on backing vocals, but, the superb Kirk Lorange on guitar, phew.

Deep Water is his high water mark
Deep water is a masterpiece of Australiana❤ I love Capricorn Dancer, another much underrated tune.
Seeing as Chris is curating a new week of Aussie Artists, one can only hope that some Tex Perkins is added either in the form of his solo work or with The Beasts of Bourbon, The Cruel Sea or even Tex, Don and Charlie (for some beautiful melancholic thought provoking tunes).
Note: Tex, Don and Charlie includes Don Walker the songwriter and keyboardist for Cold Chisel.
Richard Clapton is one of Australia's most under rated singer song writer.
Wow couldn’t believe you did Richard Clapton, love him!
George by the way sounds awesome 😂
Capricorn Dancer: 'kind of Australia's Leo Sayer', he is Australian (well since 2009 anyway).
True. I was going to mention that Leo Sayer is now Australia’s Leo Sayer!
Makes sense as Labradoodles came from Australia - Cheers Alex
Richard Clapton has always had exemplary production values!
The original recordings are best to hear for the first time, then check out the lives as a comparison.
Thanks for the nostalgic drip down memory lane. Still listen to him once or twice a year. One of our best singer songwriters. Don’t believe he gets enough love. It’s almost as if we only have room for one great singer songwriter and that position is taken by Paul Kelly. First saw Richard Clapton perform in a free concert in Hyde Park, Sydney back in 1974. Have loved his voice and song-craft ever since. I note your reference to Leo Sayer, who is now an Australian citizen. I have always thought of him as Australia’s Van Morrison with a body and face only a mother could love.
HA HA Cheers Alex
I first saw him in 1975 at Hordern Pavillion, Sydney. He was support act for Fairport Convention.
Great choice...... Richard should have been an Aussie rock superstar. Unfortunately, he does look a little similar to Big Roy O so therefore not the matinee idol type.
Re Colorado...... an old mate lived near Denver when he was married.
He always said he spent many nights exploring the Grand Canyon until he escaped and got a divorce. lol
Richard went on to produce another great Aust you should listen to Mark Guillespie check out Marks Only Human album
In fairness I think you do Richard an utter disservice comparing him to other artists. He is steadfastly original yet this was his great undoing. Personally I love this man's music and iconic sound. Absolutely committed to his craft
Ex bandmates of mine who toured with him say, that he's not overly impressed with accidentally being called " Eric "...........30 to 40 times a day. Can't understand why ?
Lovely taster of the week to come.
Clapton has a lot more beautifully written songs - a look at his greatest hits has a tonne of huge hooks.
'Deep water' and 'Goodbye Tiger' in particular worth a listen to.
Tanks Mals - Cheers Alex
I’d love these goes to to review “ I am an island’ my fave from Richard Clapton
Had four of his albums way back from the late 70s. Great underrated Aussie artist. Lots of material.
GOOD!! Cheers Alex
Boys; I understand your preference for using live recordings to reduce the potential of the YT copyright bots hitting your vids, but these had to be two of the WORST live recordings you could have picked. (Surely Chris could have steered to to a couple of better sounding vids.) Audio wise, the first one sounded like someone in the audience just hit the "record" button on their Radio Shack portable cassette player. The second is exactly as you said - the Oz version of Top of the Pops. The teeny boppers in the 'Countdown' audience were let in every week straight off the street (they lined up outside the TV studio gate each week to be part of the audience) and they were told to clap and cheer at EVERYTHING if they wanted to be invited back.. so they did! To his credit, Dicky did a live vocal for this recording - most the Countdown acts were forced to lip-synch their record to save the crew from actually having to do any extra work - but in so doing we are forced to hear that inane, ridiculous clap-along. Most of the time the Countdown stage mics were not even plugged in! A blessing in disguise, as it turns out.
Do yourself a favour and visit the studio recordings in your own time. They are an INFINITELY better listen than these 2 vids.
Hola. Will do but we chose live because you can’t overdub, drop in, fake it not because of yt
He had quite a few good songs but this is my favorite by a mile. Brings back so many good teenage memories.
GREAT! Cheers Alex
The studio version that was released is superb.
I could see those songs on my every-day-listening-playlist if I had one. I haven’t got playlists at all. 🙂 I enjoyed the songs very much.
Kind of hard to find, but here's I Am An Island with Jimmy Barnes ua-cam.com/video/SwRcQr1ys-E/v-deo.html
Thanks - Will check later when I get time. Cheers Alex
Was always first song at Seaford Carrum highschool Friday lunchtime disco.
Richard was one of our greats. So many iconic hits
Ahhh Countdown. Every Australian Gen Xers music teacher
Fun fact. Richard Clapton is a stage name formed from his guitar hero’s Keith Richards and Eric Clapton.
He changed his birth name in the mid 60s but has remained elusive as to his birth name (even his age was unclear for many years)
WOW...... he had the whole lexicon to pick from and he picked an accountants name? Cheers Alex
@@TheThamesmen
We’ve got to cut him some slack. Obviously he would have wanted to change his name to Englebert Humperdinck, but Arnold Dorsey had already beaten him to it.
Terry Gonk just does not work
Something about this song makes me put my hands in the air and spin around the room....grazy, hey?
FFsake play the studio version which is a trillion times better than this LIVE version.
This version is way too slow.
I was hoping the bonus track would have been Deep Water. Another fine RC song
Don’t forget Best Years of Our Lives - a song that brings me to tears.
*Amen. Spot on.*
Richard Clapton's best songs are Deep Water and I Am An Island. Please listen to them. Cheers from Downunder. 🙂
Cheers Alex
I am a big Dickie Clap fan and Capricorn Dancer is a pearler. I totally agree with you George, the clapping by the audience was very annoying. He has a lot of good tracks that are worth looking at in the future. As always boys, good job. I am loving your show.
American companies would only give contracts to Australians that looked and sounded like American groups...example..Air Supply and Little River Band..
Same in the UK. Cheers Alex
Song close to my heart.. grew up Along the " Palm Beach Road " you really need to listen to Renee Geyer's "its a Mans World" and Doug Parkinson's "Dear Prudence" from the same era... both amazing interpretations... Aussie 70's music was heavily surfing culture influenced... another must listen is "The Morning of the Earth" soundtrack
Ohhhh one of these made Aussie week - Cheers Alex
The Thames ...check out Australian band ..(spaniards..song ..what can l do .. .live on countdown)..or song ..one lonely voice by spaniards...they are great musicians.
Will check when we get time!!! Cheers Alex
The best years of our lives, live Melbourne feat inxs Jimmy Barnes do yourself a favour.
The crappy geriatric version of Girls on the avenue, but still a good song
Superb songwriter and outstanding songs. I would have gone with the studio version of Capricorn Dancer, though, as that Countdown audience off-beat clapping was really distracting - not really the type of song you clap to, either.
Could have done without the handclaps from the countdown audience 😂
I know, right? So inappriopriate, but the kids were told to clap & cheer EVERYTHING if they wanted to be up the front... so the were only doing as they were told. Usually the Countdown acts would mime/lip sync to their studio recording and the stage mics weren't even plugged in, so you'd never usually hear the dopey clap-alongs. Why Dicky was given a live vocal for this recording is a mystery.
2 great songs, but 2 better ones (in my opinion of course!) Deep Water and I Am An Island. Richard is awesome!
Another Aussie that deserves some love is Jon English. Hollywood 7 was a masterpiece, and a song he wrote, She Was Real, next level stuff.
Both really good tunes. The bass & drum lines in Capricorn Dancer are what makes it hypnotic to me. Richard Clapton is a great songwriter and singer. I can see where the record company didn't think there was a "hook" for Girls on the Avenue. Seems like normal record company stuff, if it's not right in front of your face it's not there.
Bang in your face. Cheers Alex
Seen Richard live among many other Australian n American Artists at The Countdown reunion concert in Adelaide. What a night🌙 . Bonus won the tickets ABC radio comp. Whoo hoo
I always liked those two tracks but I reckon his best track is I am an Island and Deep Water. He wrote plenty of great music in the 70's and 80's.
We have time :) Cheers Alex
terrible version and occasion not his band sounded crap ,it is such a great song by a great song writer
I'm hoping there's some Renee Geyer in this Aussie week 😊
I hear what you're saying Jo!
@@christhecurator It’s a Man’s World!!!!

@@Twitfilteron Heading In The Right Direction ✅️
Mmmm...the original is the best. Gonna listen to it now
Have u noticed people that stutter don’t when they sing
Skyhooks ::; Horror Movie and All my friends are getting married ❤️
Is this a cry for help? Cheers Alex
Try ‘I am an Island’.
One of the best heavy rock, sing along tracks you could ever add to your playlist.
I'll check it out!
Fantastic! Love this song ..Thank's guy's for the love.
FYI Leo Sayer has been an Australian Citizen since 2009, lol.
Another splitter. Cheers Alex
That live version of girls on the avenue was a bit average.
And then a floor manager on Countdown got them clapping all the way thru Capricorn Dancer….
We have time to mine more. Cheers Alex
Neither of these versions is as good as the original recordings
Love the song…prefer studio version though.
I first saw Richard Clapton when my friend and I were teenagers in the early 1970s.
We were wandering around Sydney CBD and decided to walk into an old theatre to check it out and there he was practising on stage, just him and his guitar.
I loved his voice and the theatre was so ornate!
We didn't know who he was at the time but bought his album when we heard his distinctive voice on the radio.
There was no one at the door to stop you from entering in those days.
actually leo sayer is an aussie!
Labradoodles come from Australia so that makes sense. Cheers Alex
have a look at Richard Clapton - I Am An Island - Live 2001
Noted - Cheers Alex
New to you... Ok, but he was new to ME!!! 🤠
Wow ! Never thought I'd see "Girls On The Avenue" get on a reaction channel,so big kudos to you guys - still remember getting this single back in 1975 here in New Zealand (where it was a minor hit). Good stuff guys, and "More" of The Warning in the future - sorry, had to say it even though it has nothing to do with Richard Clapton
Thats Chris the Curator who picked that !!!
Two of my favorite Aussie songs which are much better as studio version really. Down in the Lucky Country the next one for me. Just feel something special when i hear these songs. Thank you for choosing this and your reaction guys.
23:25 Australia's Leo Sayer? Leo Sayer is Australia's Leo Sayer, he's an Aussie now.
He can stay there!!!
Ironic that they didn't want to make Girls on the Avenue a single because it became perhaps the most played Australian song ever on Australian radio. I can't think of another song that beats it in this regard - it has such a combination of commerciality and quality that meant if you're Australian you've heard it a million times.
Kirk l'orange on guitar there nails it too
This is a great song
A couple of great tracks. Richard is a smooth performer!
LoL Leo Sayer lives in Australia now... for about 20 years now!
His perm got too tight in our damp weather!
🤙
The story goes that another large group of girls working throughout the country were very pleased to imagine that they finally had THEIR song not putting them down. Putting into the light the way they agreed with and how they wanted to be seen
Possibly heard this on some SBS TV documentary years ago.
What he is saying is that he local Prostitutes a Kings Cross took a liking to the song and made it their own
Tropic of Capricorn. Get it. Northern hemisphere Tropic of Cancer so it's a song about AU.
Funny you should mention Leo Sayer, he became an Australian citizen in 2009 lol
And to think the incomparable Jimmy Barnes sang backing vocals on some of Richard Clapton's songs
Apparently weed does that to one's spelling ability:)
HA HA
maybe there very smart misspelling the shop it look at the publicity there getting.
HA HA..... No. Not that smart :) They own a weed shop not a generative A.I Medical triage :)
Leo Sayer is now an Australian citizen…didn’t you know
Bloody Splitter..... The weather made his perm go too tight over here.Cheers Alex
Nice - @Chris the Curator really went to town on that one!. I did have tears in my eyes (from laughing) when you intro'd Capricorn Dancer. Richard Clapton's great. Really smooth and mellow - like a caramelised onion. Boz Scaggs spring to mind for me. Can't wait for the next Aussie week - Hopefully some Ratcat and some Warumpi Band would be awesome as well. Love your work guys.
Capricorn Dancer.... Now drop your pants! Cheers Alex
I always thought it was about prostitutes. Richard Clapton is a stage name based on his two favourite guitarists Keith & Eric.
Close your eyes...... It still can be. Cheers Alex
DEEP WATER, THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES and DOWN IN THE LUCKY COUNTRY are all Clapton classics as worthy of any universally known 1970s 80s turntable hits.
Best years of our lives
@@sandgroperwookiee65 Haha yes sorry ;)
I love that "turntable hits" - That should be the name of the channel Cheers Alex
Girls on the Avenue was played on Australian radio every single day when I was younger in the 70's and 80's...We love him!!
COOL!!! Cheers Alex
You just gotta do Richard Clapton's Deep Water!!!!
Do you guys ever have such a good time chatting that you forget to actually react?
100%. I know we piss people off but there’s 100s of channels. I’m just so happy to see George again.
think leo, s now an aussie, he,s been here a long time now
The LIVE version of Capricorn Dancer was a trillion times better than Girls on the Avenue.
On COUNTDOWN the music T.V. show all the teenyboppers felt compelled to clap along, even when it was inappropriate.
Richard Clapton is a GOD in Australia.
He is nothing like Leo Sayer at all, except that they are both males.
G'day again lads👋👋
Have always been a huge Richard Clapton fan.
But not a big fan of Chris's choices of recordings here.(sorry Chris 😁)
Girls on the Avenue was at a slower tempo.. and somebody needed to tell the countdown teens to stop fucking clapping throughout 'Capricorn'!
Two other Must listen to's are ..Deep Water & Best Years of Our Lives. There's a ton more classics from over 50yrs.
Ralph(as he's affectionately known) is still touring constantly thankfully.
I've met him several times & hes a fucken ripper bloke!👍👍
Tho can be useless at times,as he actually asked if I had any rolly papers after one gig. Unprepared Richard ffs! 😂🤣 🌱✅
No stress..... we have time. Cheers Alex
Clappo certainly had a unique sound. Great songwriter.
Thanks for listening - Thanks Alex
Hang your UK heads in shame, because there is a B size battery, but it is a UK and oddly enough, a Russian size, also known as U10. As to why it is only the UK and Russia that share that battery size is one of those strange twists of history. The B battery is about the same thickness as A, fatter than AA, but longer than either of them.
Girls On The Avenue is a fabulous song, but I prefer the original 1975 version. Most people assume it is about the prostitutes in Kings Cross, but apparently it is about 3 girls who lived in the street called The Avenue in Rose Bay, where he was living at the time. The record company complained that it wasn't good enough, but it became a big hit and a regular on the radio ever since. Shows just how good (if shite is regarded as good) record company execs are at spotting hit songs.
Cheers Alex
yes yes yes!
From experience of having this played all the time on AM I've learned to hate this song
Less known is the fact he produced some albums such as for INXS
yeah i was anoyed 2 at v bloody claping
I would have bent down, pointed at the person then slapped them into time. Cheers Alex
Memories ❤
I know RC I used to work for him. Hes very intelligent and very clever. He is many men really.
He is also a walking Medical Miracle as many who have partied with him can vouch for.
He has Encyclopedic knowledge of Music post 1950
He is one out of the box on many levels.
A favourite to this day! One of our best songwriters.
Capricorn Dancer really brings back summer nights by the ocean. Beautiful.☮️
It has that feel for sure
He does wear sunglasses at night.
Under. his sunglasses he wears sunglasses. Cheers Alex
Do youself a favour and listen to the original recodrings also.
OK- THANKS ALEX
@@TheThamesmen Yes, I agree. The live performance of 'Girls on the Anvenue' was good but the studio album version is a true classic. It is one of those songs that every time I hear it, in the first couple of seconds I have to turn it up becasue it is so dam good.
Richard was okay live but some of his official videos were brilliant...... as good as anything from the US and Britain.
You need to listen to his live album “Best years of our lives”. Superb.
Guys Ty I could not believe your finally getting to Richard Clapton, the guy is such a wonderful poet and his songs fill my life so very deeply. Not only a great performer but also such a beautiful man, I have had the honour of meeting Richard several times after his shows nearby and he always took the time to chat shake hands and was never full of himself at all. He is so well loved here and I am so grateful your highlighting him today and also my all time favourite from him Capricorn Dancer so TY so very much. His track list is so vast I can recommend "Deep Water" and "I Am An Island" as others from him. And as another suggested Russell Morris is another wonderful man to check out, with songs like "Wings of An Eagle' "Rachel" to add to your Aussie Week to come.Ty Guys your bloody legends to showcase our awesome music.
Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎶🎶🎶🎶💖💖💖💖
Old Russell toad licker Morris eh!!! Lets see whats in store!! Make sure you are subbed so when we release the week you get notified - Cheers Alex
@@TheThamesmen I am and ty guys, yes Russell is still going strong and touring as we speak and less acid in the system LOL

Others that are worth listening to: Deep Water; I am An Island; Glory Road.
Very New York sound !
