+Alan Hughes I'll never forget the first time I realised I was surrounded by people who'd never heard of Khe San. They knew "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil, so I couldn't understand it at all. I was doing karaoke on an island near Stockholm with a bunch of Germans, Norwegians and Swedes. They didn't have the music of course, so I just screamed the lyrics. They never asked me to sing again ;)
Great Band.I was in the Marine Corps. And we have major respect for the Aussies. They are some of the best warriors in the world.Thank you for your heroic service....
Barnsey, as a yank and as a Vietnam Nam veteran , this song has brought me peace . Thanks . The Aussies, Kiwis, ANZACS, weren't the only ones lied to .
We are all lied to. Now we just lie to each other and claim it to be the truth. Now we think the truth is just elusive. We create terms like your truth or my truth. Well there is truth and it can be found.
I'm a 41 year old American now and 3 years after discovering Chisel and Jimmy I'm still ashamed of our record executives and Dj's for not letting us in on this incredible music back when it was new. I'm spreading the word one friend at a time, but we were robbed back in the day.
Chisel themselves didn't quite crack the "American" (US) market , Once they broke up & Barnesy went out on his own , he made a few inroads , including the song titled Movie Working Class Man
I saw the 13th and last concert they ever did as a "Real" band in Sydney 12/12/83 ...Cold Chisel "Last Stand" I have NEVER seen a better live band and that includes "The Stones" ...or anyone else you would choose to put up against them. The late 70's & 80's were the halcyon days of Australian rock
Look up Dragon from NZ too mate. Similar story in the US market although in fairness to all, Dragon (like most kiwi bands of their era) were well fucked up on smack at the time!

"Khe San" great song written by Don Walker and guaranteed to get a whole pub singing along, played it in bands and as a DJ, a classic Aussie rock song, but cleverly poignant, articulate & direct. The Viet vets were not treated with the respect due, by many and had trouble adjusting. My uncle came back a different man, he would ask me to play Khe San or "I was only 19" and he would enjoy it but soon he would go into a quiet, pensive mood almost a depressive state. I soon learnt not to play these to him. Admiration & respect to our Vets, most were called up by their birthdate - conscription.

In the 80's after Barnes left CC he had some representation from Vancouver music promoter, Bruce Allen Talent. Barnes eventually did a show at a small Vancouver venue, a friend of mine went to the show and barged his way to the stage after the show and met Barnes. When he mentioned to Barnes that he really liked CC, Barnes sort of rolled his eyes and yeah, thanks. Didn't sound like he was happy with his Chisel days.
I lost a special part of my beloved brother in Vietnam he wasnt a conscript but regular Army although in the army for only 5 months before he was in Vietnam!!!
@SirLuke226 dont deserve to be called anzacs? I didn't, I did not even insuinate that. Next time you go preaching about the anzacs, thinking you're respectfully and cool, have the god damn common decency to atleast learn about the ANZAC deployments
I think you'll find that our national anthem is completely irrelevant to Australians. We didn't write it and can only barely understand it. It's an anthem for colonialist and not 'born' Australians. Khe San would be better, at least it's relevant.
Sorry mate didn't realise you were the music police, do you arrest people who disagree with your taste in music because obviously you're the best person in the world and know everything about what music is the right music.
That is your opinion however it is also lies. Yes it is true australian's like beer and stuff like that though we have jobs very similar if not more advanced then other countries. We are not all racist and dumb....
Australians were sent in with America because we are allies. It doesn't matter how many lives each country lost they still died for the same war. America was protecting it's behind from more communism.
i'm only 19 and if i had to choose one song to play for the rest of my life, this would be it. people seem to underestimate todays youth, we don't all love justin bieber and one direction haha.
My uncle sailed out of Sydney harbor in 1968 to Vietnam flew back in 69 and although I never got to know him this song makes me remember him ... Thanks barnesy

What anzac DOESN'T stand for is ignorance. Again, what the hell where you trying to say? Where did I say aussie and kiwi's dont deserve to be
In the 80's after Barnes left CC he had some representation from Vancouver music promoter, Bruce Allen Talent. Barnes eventually did a show at a small Vancouver venue, a friend of mine went to the show and barged his way to the stage after the show and met Barnes. When he mentioned to Barnes that he really liked CC, Barnes sort of rolled his eyes and yeah, thanks. Didn't sound like he was happy with his Chisel days.
isn't this the national anthem?
Jimmy might have been born in Scotland, but he's an Aussie legend. Nothing can ever take that away from him.
If there was ever a song that established a songwriter as among the best, it's Khe Sanh. Don Walker is a magician when it comes to songwriting.
I’ve so much respect for these magnificent Aussie legends. Thoughts are with Jimmy during his current medical obstacle.
I'm a three day old baby and I can't believe I've lived for three whole fucking days without hearing this song. WTF
Very hard to call this anything but Khe San, could be Nui Dat, however really one comment from an American hell the Aussies and Kiwis came to the call

@Twixstar971, if you like Chisel as much as you profess, surely you could take the time to learn the correct spelling of their name? C-H-I-S-E-L...
Love the harmonica ❤
I use to love this song as much as everyone else....Until it got flogged like a dead horse in every pub in Australia, kinda ruined it for me
@arsenalnumber12 Chisel's gunna be my biggest concert, if Diesel was incredible to watch live, Chisel are gunna blow me away!
Would have been more appropriate probably, but we did have RAAF flying CAS at Khe Sanh in Canberra bombers so it still works.
@klblackstar Where at , i saw them live sunday night at the gold coast, his voice hasnt change over the years. its amazing
That would be my mum hooked up in the Ballarat hospital he comes in she said he says do you know I'm going to do your mum I said no what are you going to do Jimmy
"How we sailed into Sydney Harbour" I was there as a 7 year old greeting Dad off the ship Mum and our brand new Ford Cortina, he did 3 tours of that shit hole. For what? Nothing.... RIP mate
