Lyrics:
I left my heart to the sappers round Khe Sanh
And my soul was sold with my cigarettes
To the blackmarket man
I've had the Vietnam cold turkey
From the ocean to the Silver City
And it's only other vets could understand
About the long forgotten dockside guarantees
How there were no V-Day heroes in 1973
How we sailed into Sydney Harbour
Saw an old friend but couldn't kiss her
She was lined, and I was home to the lucky land
And she was like so many more from that time on
Their lives were all so empty
Till they found their chosen one
And their legs were often open
But their minds were always closed
And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains
And the legal pads were yellow
Hours long, pay-packets lean
And the telex writers clattered
Where the gunships once had been
But the car parks made me jumpy
And I never stopped the dreams
Or the growing need for speed and Novocain
So I worked across the country end to end
Tried to find a place to settle down
Where my mixed up life could mend
Held a job on an oil-rig
Flying choppers when I could
But the nightlife nearly drove me round the bend
And I've travelled round the world from year to year
And each one found me aimless
One more year the worse for wear
And I've been back to South East Asia
But the answer sure ain't there
But I'm drifting north, to check things out again
You know the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
Only seven flying hours, and I'll be landing in Hong Kong
There ain't nothing like the kisses
From a jaded Chinese princess
I'm gonna hit some Hong Kong mattress all night long
Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
Yeah the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
And it's really got me worried
I'm goin' nowhere and I'm in a hurry
And the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
The true australian anthem makes you proud to be an Aussie
Thanks to all Australians for this song. Back in January 1973, there was no celebration here in the United States. Thanks again. Semper Fidelis from an old United States Marine Sergeant
Only problem is that, in so far as I recall no Australian troops were involved in that epic battle -- but I stand as always to be corrected.
@@usmc-veteran73-77shut up
Bloody oath!
This one goes out to Lance Corporal Patrick Gallagher (Navy Cross), Hotel 2/4 USMC, killed in action on the 30th of March, 1967 in Da Nang.
One of Ireland's bravest sons, may his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.
🇮🇪🇺🇲
Amen
It’s amazing how many generations this song is related to we came back from Afghanistan and all the boys went to work at the mines
When I was in the US Navy I visited Australia five times and learned about Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes . Although Jimmy never served , he sent a good message about how us veterans feel after coming home .
I'm getting married in the morning
Screaming, wailing Jimmy sings his guts out and leaves it all. Bottle of vodka a night, his throat is raw, the polyps are jumping and the crowd`s bloody loving it. For you overseas readers, this Aussie Rock band is celebrating their 50th year this year can you believe. Real Aussie Rock Legends.
How good is it when you see Barnsey and mossy sing together
True icons of Australian music, beats the new stuff by a far
Too right mate.
Was born in Scotland just saying,a legend
Slightly more tame than 40 years ago. But fcuk it is Chisel, doing Chisel! Love it!
Dude is smashing that harmonica 🤘🏽
The interplay between Ian and Jimmy is amazing!
The interplay between lan and Jimmy is amazing!
Khe Sanh Cold Chisel@@LisaSmith-th1bh
A privilege to have to lived in Australia when Cold Chisel were at their peak
Greatest Aussie track of all time I say
Definitely
Ture living legend and this all the way NZ
I’m Scottish but I fucking love this song , such an anthem. I feel this song is proper Australia !
Jimmy Barnes is technically Scottish as well , he was born in Glasgow and raised in Australia
Jimmy Barnes is Glaswegian
„I'm *nationality* but I like music from *other nationality*, too.“ lol
Yeah mate!!
no need to apologise for being Scottish.Rupert Murdoch is Scottish.so not all Scots aren't poor and miserable and downtrodden and misers.
wooahh... goosebumbs! .the old bastards again !! .. still alive and still the best band on this planet !! shed a tear for the old times .. stay safe Guys !!
I played this song on a borrowed in an Army mess in 1985 to both Commissioned and NCO Australian soldiers and they went BANANAS. I was 19 and they had never heard this song. I can play it today
I'm calling BS on your story in 1985 there would not be one Aussie who would not know this song let alone a bunch of diggers even today you would be hard up trying to find an Aussie who has not heard this song before
I never really liked Jimmy Barnes or Cold Chisel growing up. Then one day he was asked to sing Khe Sanh on some stupid show I was watching. No instruments, no backing, no nothing, just his voice and he killed it. Loved him ever since.
I love this song, bring memories from my young days.............
@cold chisel yes’s obviously she’s gone and got lost ? Why come onto a song that you fing scew up the comments which aren’t here anyway man your a sick fuck, I don’t know why I’m even here,I’m gone
just love these guys - what a performance
NOT Last Stand! RINGSIDE!
Bloody Awesome Jimmy!
Screamin Jimmy
My father's two years in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine Corps officer fortunately didn't effect him in quite the same manner as the person in this great song, but he definitely was never the same. How could he be? I'm sorry that the U.S. dragged Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea into such a colossally misjudged adventure. Thanks for sticking with us. It's a shame you had to suffer, too.

Joined the Royal Australian Navy in the 80s at16 and did subs. My mother always said her baby left and never came home.
Absolutely STUNNING
"I need a beer,my thongs and Vegemite come too!"
You legend Barsney!😎🍺
@🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
Lov this song i'm Balinese
Thanks to Robert, because as he kept on telling me, that if you don't react they can't do anything. Same in Buenos Aires, and even thesedays.
@🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
The old fella is showing it but Ian is as good as ever
All rise for the National Anthem!
Bloody oath mate. Aussie all the way.
@@stevedrake604 Who gives a fuck. Australia fought along side America. Maybe not in the particular incident but nethertheless. Are you a veteran yourself? Serious question not trying to be rude.
@@megatron5644 someone in the band musta been a 'nam vet !
The only time it is expectable for grown men down the pub to put their arms around each other was while screaming out this, most iconic of Australian songs.
How is this interpreted as the national anthem?…it speaks of Australia treating their Vietnam veterans poorly
shivers and goosebumps
loved this song and learned it in Kuta, Bali when it wasn't blown to shite and then rebuilt as a shopping mall..Damn everyone rocked to this at Patty's bar in 99.
Apparently I first met J.B. in 1974 cnr. Kings Road & Draycott Avenue, Chelsea, London.
Best band ever music with 😃
at 415 and onwards you have Barnes the total extrovert calling Mossy the introvert up to sing - WATCH THE BAND AND THEM LAUGH AT THIS - priceless!!!!!!
Mossy’s guitar does the singing, even though he’s a very good singer in his own right.
God bless that man!
Powerful
Awesome harmonica work! 🙂
i love Khe Sanh, Quang Tri Province, Vietnam

There was no official celebration when the Vietnam War ended in January 1973, like there was during World War Two. Semper Fidelis.
Possibly the best regards the team and I will send
THANK YOU
I don't know where Judy Crozier was in 1973, she would have finished school in 1971 at Toorak College.
Daaad will clear the roads, so I get to my appointment on time please
The Florence Nightingale Award would be wonderful. All being paid for by Australia.
sailing on
Barnsey sounds like an old man - Mossey...Yay!!!!
He is 3 months younger than me, he came out to Oz the year before me, we're both from Glasgow...jeebus ...we're almost twins, ...almost.
One difference...the bastard can sing, can he sing.
Hell yah.
Screamin Jimmy
Does anybody have a link to a MUCH older, live version of this song, that disappeared from UA-cam over a year ago?

Jimmy, Recently I wrote two letters to Boris, and this morning I bought the International Express and he is definitely out of office.
All I said was that 'Martin' the medium, and very early on, like 2002, asked me if I wanted to go into a detention centre, which he thought I should go in to, but no way,
everything back then was quite wonderful I was getting lots of lots of casual work as a R.N. I had friends, and life was good, even received a scholarship to
do a grad qualification in Advanced Acute Nursing, at LaTrobe, Bendigo. Which I did part-time. I'd even rang then up because I was wanting to know why I was
offered this scholarship and I can't remember what they said. Because I deserved it or something, to do with the Victorian Government giving away all these scholarships,
probably the latter.
@🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
nice
National anthem of Australia folks
Parents are gon watch u soon put on a show folks
Good song
Good song
Billy Cavanagh Great one, indeed
Not as good as it gets, but pretty good for (almost) pensioners. Still do it hard, for real and loving it. As am I!
Jimmy phoned it in on this one, he was gargling from the back of his throat instead of heaving from his Diaphragm,...Mossy did the work, his vocals were decent for an old fella.
Mates
sail away
RIP Chris Wilson. Go Barnesy
Just as well
I'm still going nowhere and I'm in a hurry !

With mytts
There’s nothing like the kisses from a jaded Chinese princess
Nothing but princesesses with their legs open
NOT Last Stand! RINGSIDE!
It isn't ringside as Charlie is on the drums not Steve
It takes a Scot to rock the joint
Omm
Would not even worry,,,,, about the electrician,,,if you don't mind,,,,,
SO SAD..the good ol boys of my memory are as old as me&they are playing like 60 year olds
it is a protest song about the Nam war and the way the Vets are snubbed.. respect us ? cheers Chisel
Hello how are you❤
Spare a thought for the electrician
😎😜😺💀☠🤟🤝❤
@🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸💖
Stick your fingers into 400 volts
... just to wake up...
.
That should do it
How good was that??
Fair effort for 60yr olds. I remember back in the day getting drunk as a skunk@a Canberra Rugby Club live music night&watching&rocking witha young up&coming band Cold Chisel & IT WENT OFF. Then we got a kiss&a grope with a drunk hottie& rode our Harleys home&we all live to tell the tale. No Rapes No Disrespect to anyone, No meth or ICE, no bothersome Cops. All was Peaceful.
Pretty damn good. I, at the age of 53 got to see Chisel live in 2003, Ringside Challenge Stadium. Loved it, but would have killed to be at the Hordern etc early 80's or elsewhere before. Personally, my favourite band!
Lindsey James told me that the Queen didn't even know I was a tennis champion. Youngest ever in the Firbank C.E.G.G.S. school tennis team, in 1966, I was 11, 1968 won Girls' Championship at Black Rock Tennis Club, and my is up there on the board of champions, also pennant tennis, and we went everywhere it was fantastic. The fathers took turns in driving a car load of girls,
to all sorts of places. Lauriston had two team in the competition, the rest like us at Black Rock only one. Jock Penman was in charge of us juniors, and the Club Secretary wrote to my
parents and told them I had the potential to become a world champion. The Queen ignored all of this, she had no understanding and I was sent off to be tortured in Argentina.
Aren't we related to each other Jimmy?
and the fuel taped up the wazoo
NO OFFENCE to jimmy but looks like he couldnt remember the words in this case,i love jimmy barnes, but sometimes they do forget the words and some of this one looks like he might have, cold chisel wasnt the same after jimmy left, even though was good still, jimmy barnes had the voice of cold chisel
You know, Jimmy wouldn't be a bad singer if he would actually finish the lines and articulate the bloody words and preferably refrain from screaming. Khe Sanh is a great song and he doesn't do it justice most of the time. The fella who wrote the song must cringe sometimes. Jimmy could probably learn a lot from John Farnham. That man can sing.
This is not the official live film clip.
Always against communists...
covid song
And suck the blood out of my mate bitten by a snake.. just things we do with matrs
Heard better
Time to give up bro sorry mate should have stopped years ago, left behind a legend instead an omg!
Are you serious, then why were you listening. If you sound like that after years of singing, let’s alone 30plus years ago comment otherwise piss off. Your negativity is not needed
Stupid i know..
He should sing it better, accentuate the song better.
how bad the drummer
when i was in Primary school i was wishing Jimmy barnes was my Music teacher Cold Chisel is the one that inspire me to be a musician i cant sing tho so i play guitar
That was one of the nicest harmonica solos I have ever heard hands down
The old bugger's beltin' it out as best he can!
Onya Jimmy, well done mate.
So good to see them together and happy
I saw them in Tamworth for there blood moon tour let’s hope they go around one more time
Jimmy is brilliant live
Like a fine wine, the older the frigging better it gets
And No Chorus
Jimmy is screaming his heart out but Ian Moss is harmonising. Ian is a god.
Dave absolutely killed it on the harp. Amazing playing
