Return to the Survival Bunker- I can't sleep.

  • My husband Dave and I discovered this abandoned survival bunker on land we bought in Interior Alaska. It had been occupied by a prepper it seemed, and then left to the elements with a bad roof for decades.
It seemed very daunting to clean it up after our first effort, and we let it sit a few weeks, deciding what to do with it. (Clean it up? Burn it? Leave it and move on to working the better part of the property?)
In the meantime, Dave traveled to Michigan to begin a new project and I.... I couldn't sleep thinking about this mess sitting on our new property.
So- I got a dumpster delivered. Join me to see what I endure with the cleanup and if I end up finding any TREASURES!

I remember doing stuff just like that when my husband and I bought an old fixer-upper. Most people thought it was a tearer-downer. I was pregnant and just one of the projects was when I had to get the very old, ugly deteriorating and HEAVY wool rug up and out of the house. I had to cut it into small enough pieces so I could carry it to the dumpster. You just do it till is gets done. And then you feel good about what you did!

The difference in batteries: Standard batteries will corrode and leak out over time. Industrial or Super Heavy Duty batteries have sealing gaskets and are made to better specs. So if you need them to sit a while, get the better grade. But if you blow through batteries really fast, get the cheap ones. I am surprised there was not a basement. Great work! What a trooper!

Interesting to note that peanuts from 95 were still "good", along with the oats, and pasta, if they hadn't contacted water. Not enough medium for bacteria to grow. That shelter would be an excellent hunting, or anti-bear shelter. The windows are interesting. Definitely anti bear intrusion capable. Sad to see those action packer bins are not water intrusion resistant at all. I actually have some of those for transporting filmmaking, and band lighting gear. It’s interesting when you see how much time and energy people put into preparing for survival in case the world “ends” and then it doesn’t. It always makes me wonder if they spent the same energy on living and enjoying the moment. I was talking to a prepper the other day, and I said, frankly if the world ends up like the day of the comet and there are no puppies, bbq with friends, beach sunsets, camping around a fire, horseback rides, laughing with kids over a board game I am not sure I want to survive. He looked at me and said , “gosh, I never thought of it that way.” But, like everything, to each own. I did like his book choices! Definitely not light reading.

@@kmsch986 Yeah -- I was part of and friends (IRL) with a handful of the original folks that called themselves "preppers" on UA-cam. For me having some common sense preparedness (Skills, Food Storage, secondary Heat Sources, et al.). It was interesting to watch that original "Prepper" movement burn out (like the "Patriots" and "Survivalists") before them the more sane ones started calling themselves "Homesteaders" (...eventually that was corrupted with doomer crap too). The current economic situation has a resurgence of "Preppers". Fortunately, any bit of the toxic doomer crap didn't stick with me though I have seen quite a few folks slip into worse and worse delusions about the state of the world and desiring authoritarian political solutions. The books were interesting to me as I see some echos of myself (the bookshelf next to me has some botany textbooks, Bushcraft books by Mors Kohanski, and assorted other DIY skills books).

The man that built that appears to have been setting it up as a bug out shelter. Given the dates on the food and what was going on at that time he was likely preparing for the S to HTF. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have some things buried or stored in other parts of the property that you may not have discovered. Given the topics of the books that he stored he was definitely a thinking man and set the place up with purpose.
