G’day Mike, this Video has me speechless! As a fellow Aussie when I first heard of the floods in your town my first thoughts where I hope Mike and his family ok and safe. Days passed and you popped up in a chat and I was so Happy to see you where ok! Although I never met you in person after spending so much time watching and chatting to you I consider you a Mate. I’m sure there’s some tuff days still to come, so take care and my best wishes to you, your family and friends.
Hey Michael, It was nice to clear my head and watch a livestream where you were in the chat. I appreciate all the support you have given to the channel and I think of you as a friend as well. Thank you for all the kind words and I hope to see you in person some day! Videos will return soon!
That is absolutely heartbreaking Mike. Thank you for posting this video. It's hard to believe, but over here in America I haven't heard a single thing about that flood. The amount of devastation and destruction that it's caused for your city is almost unbelievable. I can't imagine floods of that magnitude. We had pretty severe flooding here in Iowa back in 1993, but the levels I saw in this video were just astonishing. Reminds me when hurricane Katrina hit in Louisiana. I know it's going to take a long time for your community to rebuild and come back from this, but I hope that it is sooner than later my friend. Happy to see so many folks helping each other out during this terrible time. And hopefully there will be a lot more support coming. I'm going to have to look into this more as I'm curious as to how this happened. Maybe you'll put out a video explaining more of it to your friends overseas like me. Prayers go out to everyone affected by this, hopefully despite all of the property destruction, the amount of human casualties and injuries is minimal. Continue to stay safe my friend and keep us posted. Thanks again for sharing this video with us.

Hey Luke, that is terrible news to find out you literally lost everything. Lots of amazing people in the community doing rescues of people using there own craft. I'm proud of this community. Thank you my friend and have a great day!
Man that is incredible, Houston didn't look like that after Hurricane Harvey, and some of the other flooding. Just crazy how much rain can fall in one place. Glad to hear that you and your family are okay,my heart goes out to y'all in Australia.
It is at the very bottom of a well known ancient flood plain that collects water from over a 1000 square mile area and funnels it all through a 2 mile wide gap where the river is and why the town was built there in the 19th century on the back of river trade before there were any roads. This happens about every 10 years there over and over again. A lot of Australia is just built in the wrong places on major flood plains and it has nothing to do with climate change this is the climate getting back to normal its just part of life here and it brings new life to replace the old. The 99% of the population who don't live on flood lands are doing just fine, its the same people time and time again who get flooded out and keep going back for more.
Man,* that is incredible.* Houston didn't look like that after Hurrican Harvey and some of the other floods*. It is crazy* how much rain can fall in one place. I am* glad to hear that you and your family are okay.* My heart goes out to the citizens* of Australia. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

So no lessons learnt or flood defence measures put into place when it happened in 1974? Floods are truly devastating and my thoughts are with you all. My partners son had been showing her some pictures from Brisbane news. It always on in the news here in the UK too, the smallest amount rain and 'bang' floods...hope you are not badly effected, thinking of you ❤
Hey Martin, In 1974 some people believed it would never happen again, this them it went 2 meters higher. The video in the boats was a day after while it was receding. Thank you for thinking of me!
Lismore HAS had significant upgrades in flood mitigation since 74. Most notably a flood levee designed for 10.4m floods (1 in 10 year level) it was built in 2005 and has only been topped 3 times since. Once in 2017 and twice within a month in 2022. I have a newspaper clipping of the last major flood before the levee was built of me and my sister running a ross a flooded driveway of the lismore square. I know that spot well and i remember that day very clearly despite being only a child at the time. I remember the water level and my dad driving downtown to “move stock” at our family’s business as the water began to rise and my mother taking us to view the floods to distract us from the very possible chance that my dad would get trapped as he had to drive through deeper sections to return home to us. I remember my mother being scared for his life and angry he left us. Luckily the water didnt go past the floor height back then though. Infact it came to the driveway in 2017 (the highest flood since then before 2022) and the closest it had ever been to 1974 again. And even in 1974 it only came within a cm of going inside. Lapping at the doorstep back then… The business is going on 60+ years and it had never got water inside. But its still technically flood town so dad still went to move stock, even just the lowest stuff up a shelf or two. But 2022… that flood was something else. Something nobody knew what would happen. See the levee was designed to stop smaller floods and BUY TIME for people to escape and evacuate from the township before floods. Even before the levee the town was known for floods and most if not all buildings are built with floods in mind. People describe their homes as “raised single story” they are talking about house that are on stilts so that when you look at the home they are the height of a two to three story house but they are in-fact single story homes. These super tall houses are built so people can move all their stored stuff into the house and then sit on their balcony and safely watch the flood go by with at least half a meter of clearance to spare. They then go downstairs as the water goes down and wash the mud off while it is still wet (not possible if you have to wait for the roads to be accessible first so staying in the house is very practical from a cleanup perspective as it doesn’t come off if it dries). It is normal for people to be home during floods. So in 2022 people thought they were safe. They thought yeah it was gonna be a big one but their houses were built for it. So they stayed and watched the waters cut them off from help and from escape. They then watched the waters rise step by step. Faster than any flood i have ever known. So fast that when people looked upstream and saw waters higher than they had before and started to realise what was happening, it was already too late. It was too late for my parents to even reach their buisness, let alone prepare it. They didnt even make it in time to move their two work veichles to the hill… which would have only taken a few minutes… In those same few minutes people were already stranded, Not knowing that people would soon die in this flood. The waters rose in the night, they rose past the steps, past the floorboards, past the beds, the kitchen counters, past the windows and even above the gutters or tips of the roofs. Again these are houses that were on stilts to hold them above the worst floods… now up to their rooflines (or higher) in flood waters. In a town where it was normal go ride out the flood at home! At this point 1,000s of people, including full families, kids included. Were stranded and praying for their lives. Emergency services were overwhelmed and the locals came to the rescue forming the tinny army to save lives that would otherwise have 100% been lost. The town was devastated businesses and homes, gone. Some literally washed away. Others converted to piles of stinky muddy rubble. Dirt and mud as far as the eye can see. And the thing that got me was driving around post flood trying to figure out how things like a microwave got stuck on top kf a light pole, near where i had that photo taken all those years ago… in what i had thought was a “big” flood… standing in that spot, over 15 years later looking up at that microwave, perched atop that pole, i still cannot imagine the sheer volume of water that went through lismore… It wasnt a flood. It was a mega tsunami… Edit: my parents business was out of action for 3 months whilst they fixed the basics. They are still rebuilding. Its been nearly two years. If another flood ever hits. Dad has said he wont even try and save it. After what happened this time he will stay safely at home! Also turns out by a stroke of luck one of his employees saved his work ute. Their own car had broken so they, knowing the flood was coming, hitch hiked to the shop, grabbed the keys and saved the ute. Their own damaged car was left to get flooded by the roadside where it lay sticken with a snapped axle (hit a pothole whilst trying to drive to help another staff member with flood prep) and they used the ute to finish their trip, saving it in the process. We didnt know this until 3 days later!!! The work van did get destroyed though… total write off. But you can find pics of it here on youtube!
You get a definite sense of people coming to the aid of people (and animals!) in need, and that is *inspiring*. The faces of those being rescued go a long way toward describing what they have endured. Thoughts and many prayers for those there in need and for those there who are responding.
Man sorry too see this Mike. Lots of work to rebuild and fix the damages after. Great too see the rescuing going on with the community banning together. 😀
This flood was something else . Lismore has a history of floods . All of our previous big ones have been in the 12 -12.5 metre range . People know where to move their cars , or how high to lift their goods to be on the safe side. This one was 14.5 metres , effectively a flood on top of our worst ever flood . This was not a flood , this was devestation , a catastrophe.
Oh Mike! I'm speechless! I'm so happy y'all are safe; but dang, your town! I have no words.l Hang tough, hug your family. I'll be firing off prayers for you and your town. Wow!

Wow so sorry Mike. We experienced a bad flood in my area (Houston, Texas, USA) in 2017 with Hurricane Harvey but as devastating as that was to our city at the time it was not as bad as this looks. I pray you and your family and your home are ok.
just got out in time upstairs and car uphill , close , had a coffee in the morning, went outside ,looked ok, five minutes later water covered exhaust pipe, half an hour later chest high inside house and rising. Came up so fast just before dawn, caught a lot of people unawares and they swam for it or waited on roofs for rescue boats , got out with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
Hey Nick, that is intense and amazing you survived with your life. So many people caught off guard in the wee hours of the morning. I'm glad your OK. Thank you for sharing your story my friend!
It has been heart-breaking - even for those of us here in Australia who aren't in the middle of these floods. Just watching it has been heart breaking enough. It is the worst flood in Australian history, In a town called Lismore, NSW. It hit 14.5 metres - up to the power lines. Power lines. They knew it was going to rain, but it just didn't stop raining, and then the flooding came in the middle of the night. Residents were on alert, they had moved their belongings 'up high' because they knew the rain was coming, but it came during the night, and the water rose soooo fast, it caught them off guard........ That's why you see all of the boats in the video. A plethora of boats turned up to rescue residents, because they just didn't have time to think about it. It's NEVER risen that high - anywhere in the country............ It just didn't stop raining...............
Such a hard time for so many who have lost their homes. Heart breaking, I am in Ballina, people said it would never flood here. We have hundreds of people without homes. 😔
My heart goes out to you and your town please be safe . If I was close I’d say come over and stay with us . Best I can do is say me and mine are here . We don’t have much but I will help you if I can my friend

Lapping at the doorstep back then…
The business is going on 60+ years and it had never got water inside.
They didnt even make it in time to move their two work veichles to the hill… which would have only taken a few minutes…
In those same few minutes people were already stranded, Not knowing that people would soon die in this flood.
And the thing that got me was driving around post flood trying to figure out how things like a microwave got stuck on top kf a light pole, near where i had that photo taken all those years ago… in what i had thought was a “big” flood… standing in that spot, over 15 years later looking up at that microwave, perched atop that pole, i still cannot imagine the sheer volume of water that went through lismore…
It wasnt a flood. It was a mega tsunami…
Edit: my parents business was out of action for 3 months whilst they fixed the basics.
That's terrible. I hope you and your family are safe!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hey Kelly, Thank you for thinking of me! My family and I are doing fine.
Bloody devastating, hope you and the family are doing ok
You get a definite sense of people coming to the aid of people (and animals!) in need, and that is *inspiring*. The faces of those being rescued go a long way toward describing what they have endured. Thoughts and many prayers for those there in need and for those there who are responding.
Hey James, Many wonderful people in the community who stepped up to help. Thank you my friend!

Devastated ! Sureal ! Speechless
0:40 Years ago I had an office in that building upstairs on the 2nd floor. To think it could have flooded to that level is incredible.
This one was 14.5 metres
, effectively a flood on top of our worst ever flood . This was not a flood , this was devestation , a catastrophe.
hope you are safe. thoughts and prayers and internet hugs.
Hope you & your family are safe. Prayers to all..

just got out in time upstairs and car uphill , close , had a coffee in the morning, went outside ,looked ok, five minutes later water covered exhaust pipe, half an hour later chest high inside house and rising.
No one is ever really gone “Luke Skywalker”

It got to 14.5 metres
@@leodethridge Aah! Thanks for the info! I'll edit it to suit!

Such a hard time for so many who have lost their homes. Heart breaking, I am in Ballina, people said it would never flood here. We have hundreds of people without homes. 😔
