Many I know are looking after the very young. Because childcare is so expensive they have had to become childminders for their grandchildren. It's hard enough to look after babies and children in your 20's and 30's, let alone your late 60's and 70's, but they don't feel they have much choice. If they don't help out, one of the parents will not be able to work. From the government's perspective that will mean one fewer income to tax, and perhaps one more family having to claim some form of benefit or concession. In that sense many pensioners are still helping to contribute to the Treasury's coffers. I didn't realise just how many grandparents are doing this until a family friend joined this small army - and it is a small army. It opened my eyes and I now notice these grandparent-childminders in supermarkets, parks, playgroups and outside school gates. Once I started noticing this army, I also realised that it's often pensioners who are staffing charity shops, working in food banks, giving their time to local 'helping hands' groups and running social clubs. Perhaps if they all went on strike the government might realise their value to society.

To be fair, the taxpayer only pays for the necessary additional expense of maintaining a *second* home for MPs, not both of them - they pay for the first one out of their own taxable income. @@ndr8469 Not even influence, just to be "chums" with "supporters" but the point is they are paid huge salaries anyway and should be able to keep their accounts clean without putting themselves into the role of an Elite receiving gifts from Vassals... Wasted money on a costly "investigation," MPs were fined, careers ruined... No integrity whatsoever! Honestly, I have no recollection of the much-maligned Liz Truss being given lavish gifts!

The full state pension (roughly the same for those on pension credit if they do not receive that) is £11,500 per annum and rising to £12,000 per annum in April.
