      He spent a part of his childhood in Italy, he probably never had to formally study Italian and knowing one Latin language makes it easy to learn others. Btw yes studying a language can be difficult, dont ever down play a person's efforts to master a language, especially when learning at an adult age. 我可以说四个语言,可是学的时候不容易。

You're american with italian ancestors, nothing more. Italian is a nationality, not a race. It's not " impossible " to learn, it's just very hard to get to near native level and requires over 10+ years of active experience/studying. Even I know a thing or two about Chinese because my highschool (went to the same one as her) required 2 years of Chinese to graduate here in California, Spanish wasn't an option because most kids here spoke Spanish already. (hispanic, latino, ect)
