  • In which John and his family drive north to South Bend and consider what to love and how.
    Also, I get to lift the greatest trophy in football.
    Thanks to Ian Rush, Patrik Berger, Courtney, and everyone at Liverpool Football Club for making our day so special. Also thanks to Mohamed Salah for absolutely smashing that penalty in the final. Thanks also to Divock Origi and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson and and and and ....

    We have been Man U fans for 30 years and have never hated Liverpool! We root for Newcastle, too: I guess we just love great soccer. My hubby played soccer in college where I learned to love this strange, “new” game. We took classes so we could coach younglings and continued to promote the game to anyone who would listen. We lived in South Bend for 18 years and saw the Michiana Soccer Association grow. We attended every Notre Dame soccer game that our schedules would permit. In 1994, we scored tickets to Russia vs Sweden and actually caught a ball that was launched high and wide over the goal. During the last 2 men’s World Cups, we watched every game (we had to record some), and this summer, we saw every women’s game (we are teachers and have our summers off). We love, love soccer, South Bend, and Notre Dame stadium, and loved this post. I had goosebumps just listening. Although I really loved seeing you lift the trophy (cup), I think seeing your daughter traveling with you was even better.

    1) I love your thoughtfulness with the feeling of belonging and being very careful and aware of creating "other"ness
    2) I will proudly say that while I pretend I became a Liverpool fan back in 2011 because I felt like they were the closest to the Packers in the premier league, it was mostly because of your passion and the YNWA spirit of the club.
    3) You can't help but get chills every time you hear YNWA sung by it's fans. I find it almost more powerful than the Himno de Sevilla, which is hard to beat. I think because YNWA is more community feel than Himno is about being proud of the club and the history of the club.

    So many thoughts on this. 1. I love how pure your joy is in this video. I'd do that too if I got to hold the 2014 National Championship College Football trophy. 2. The drive to South Bend was tedious when I went in 2011, I can't imagine how bad it is with construction. We used dead raccoons as "mile markers." 3. Alice is six?! Where have I been all this time? 4. This video is exactly why I enjoy this channel so much. The mix of emotions, facts, introspection and other valuable human experiences is always so well done, even when the fullness of that experience cannot be expressed.

    These vlogs are so important to me, not only because John and Hank are amazing sources of perspective and humor, but also because they just... share. They share their life experiences, and their reasons for feeling a certain way, they share their perspectives about topics, simple and abstract with such relate-ability, but also by unconventional means at the same time. Who knew that I would think critically about what I love, and why I love it from a UA-cam video about a man and his daughter going to a football meet-up, and getting to hold a monumental trophy whilst performing a joyful tap dance in front of two football superstars. My appreciation for life and the concepts that I work with every day that fundamentally makes me "me" have been greatly deepened over the years of watching 'vlogbrothers'. And I just wanted to share my gratitude for that. I've grown up watching your vlogs, figuratively and literally.

    i don't think a lot of people quite understand what being a part of something like a football club really feels like. it is so weird to me when people outside the "fan circle" question why we get emotional when a bunch of people we have never met score goals or make passes or create great tackles. a friend asked me why i refer to liverpool as "we", why it is "us" who won the champions league title, and i couldn't give her a coherent answer up until watching this video today. i don't know john green but here i am connecting with him on something bigger than him and i. when, for example, liverpool fans listen to "you'll never walk alone" and you hear those fist words, we feel the same things - pride, passion, joy, unity. it is crazy, especially from the road our team has taken. sports as a whole is something that has this unifying power, it is incredible.

    I actually really needed this video in a way I never thought I would. After an incredibly low point in my battle against mental illness three years ago, Nerdfighteria was, quite literally, one of the only things carrying me through the darkness of my depression. I watched every video, listened to every podcast, read every book... now, a couple years later, I haven't read Hank's book, I don't listen to the podcasts, and I rarely watch the videos. Before, I would have bought a plane ticket to go see them on their mini tour, even if it was in a place I never would otherwise go to. Now, I'm not so sure I would buy a ticket if they came to my home town. It's not that I don't love Nerdfighteria anymore, but I have come to love other things, too, and have learned to balance my life in a way that is mentally healthy for me. As such, I have started to categorize myself as an outsider, thinking I could no longer be considered a Nerdfighter. But I am a Nerdfighter. I do love this community. It made me feel so much peace hearing John say that, truly, there are no outsiders, including in UA-cam fandoms. So, yah. Thank you. I am happy to still be able to call this community my home, even if I never again dive as deeply as I did in the tuatara rabbit hole. ;)

      As someone who doesn’t really root for sports teams, I was interested in how you got into Liverpool and what sets them apart from other teams. Do they have a special story of community, like AFC Wimbledon, are they “just” really good at football, and/or something else?

    • @malahape
      @malahape 5 років тому +6

      @@homeworkbreak4237 hi :) so usually fans of any sports teams will always have different stories as to why they root for the team they support and it is difficult to give an overarching reason why people would support the team. with liverpool however, personally speaking of course, there is just something more, like their slogan as of late has been: "this means more". i came to love liverpool coming out into my own growing up. my family is mainly man united fans so i grew up in a man united home but at the age of like 12 or 13, i discovered liverpool and they were at a pretty mediocre stage, having finished 7th or so in the table. i was not a hardcore football fan but my family has always been a sports family and with time my love for the sport and then liverpool intensified and i came to find that there is this passion in the team that i had never seen in any other, players and supporters alike. watch any video of the fans singing "you'll never walk alone" right before the match and you feel it from across the screen. i suggest watching the video of liverpool winning against barcelona in the uefa semi-final, and you will see that bond between the players and the fans. people say anfield is a fortress, a cheat code and it is. the fans are known as the 12th man because they are. it just means more, so much more and it is beautiful.

    There's so much I've come to love in the world via UA-cam purely because of the boundless enthusiasm of those who makes content about it. My favourite being Geoff and Vicki Marshall here in the UK who makes videos about trains and train stations but do it in such a way that every video is a uplifting moment that enables you to feel their joy about the things that they love. Every if we don't love a thing ourselves, we can feel and appreciate the love others have for it and in so are, for a moment, brought together by it.

    I was lucky enough to see Hank and John on the tour for TATWD, and I had a similar reflection on the passing of time. I thought about when I started watching Vlogbrothers in 2012, and what a deeply sad, lonely person I was then. I had depression and serious anxiety problems going unchecked and I was suffering for it. I compared that time to the present that was October 2017, and how different my life was. In 2012 I didn’t think I would ever be “better.” I thought that was how I would always feel. I’ve had really low times since 2012, but also some really great times and throughout all that, Vlogbrothers was a constant for me. I always enjoy your videos! Thanks for all that you do.

    Question: how do I remember the “us” ‘s that I’m a part of that I care deeply about when I am far away from them? I’m a scientist and my work can be very solitary. But there are many people way across the world that might benefit from the work I put in at 11am on a Tuesday. Many, many Tuesdays.

    It wasn’t until very recently that I found myself being part of something like this, but man has it changed so much. I’ve always been shy and aloof, using feigned disinterest to keep me at arm’s length from everyone else as a way to protect myself. But, as a nearly 24 year old lady, I quite accidentally fell face first into the BTS army of all things. I found myself commenting, responding, liking, and sharing, very much throwing myself into the depths of togetherness, like one big group hug. No walls. Just openness and vulnerability, happy and excited discussions of all the things we love about our favorite band and our feelings about various songs. It sounds silly even to me, but being open about being a fan of something has really been a turning point for me this year. Human interaction, it’s a wild thing.

    Thanks for showing me that there can be a good way to love a football team John. I'm an Arsenal fan but I spend time pretty much exclusively with people who hate football for being loud, confrontational and divisive and honestly I was starting to agree with them. I think that without your positive love for the game in my life I might not have gone back to football next season after the sadness of Wengers departure and that soul-crushing night watching Baku. But here I am getting ready for another season, hoping against hope that this might be our year, because I watched Wimbledon stay up on the final day and listened to you'll never walk alone after the CL final with tears in my eyes and I know that when Arsenal have a good one it'll feel even more magical.
