- I'm sorry this story isn't very interesting or as beautiful as you were maybe imagining it would be. During that first year, we both saw other people between dating and not dating and we were bad at communicating and I think we really loved each other even from the very beginning, but it was filled with drama, as many teenage romances are. (we were nineteen...so still teenagers...god that's amazing to think of now...we were NINETEEN!)
I would love to hear this story from Katherine's point of view.

Proximity took over. Katherine is laughing.
Hank, I would just like to know if you liked my comment because that would be pretty cool. Awesome story!
You are cool Mr @@MrGhackney
My favorite moment is when the tone of his voice changes slightly when he says "Katherine is home!" Melts my heart...!
They're so adorably wholesome. John is as well, but I'll always be more partial to Hank and The Katherine. Much love to y'all and to all of nerdfighteria
"I was super awkward, and probably not very interesting or useful." my entire freshman year of college.
me for most of my life
Probably most of all of us who still need to take a more realistic look on those interesting and useful parts of ourselves. Selfacceptance makes us more approachable. You are more lovable than you think and I know you already think that that is a lie. Probably. Also, I still struggle with this, but I found out recently I am more interesting, useful and lovable than I thought myself to be. I'm pretty great. Glad I came for the story and stayed;
P.s
I wish you love and otherwise, I wish you peace.❤
Hank and Katherine are basically the plot of every cheesy fanfiction.
Dorms: check.
Sleepovers without sex: check.
Proximity taking over: check.
On again off again: check.
Finally settling down into a seemingly healthy and well balanced relationship: check.
lmao
I'm going to use "proximity took over" as a euphemism for that now. xD
"During the times when i wasn't sleeping, you know, no feet away from her. DING DING DING DING."
God that cracked me up.
***** The state directly below your....wait, you're from Saskatchewan, aren't you?
1 year late, it's manitoba
jesusHERCULESchrist is that how sex works? Just DING DING DING?
@@Nicoratboy Who needs Sexplanations when Hank can explain sex so eloquently in merely 3 words "ding ding ding"?
Story starts the best way. " I was sleeping maybe 10 feet away from her. Except for the times when I was sleeping no feet away from her.

Michael Lurch Dingdingdingding!

So uh... Does no one else think this sounds like a John Green novel?
+Emily Thompson yeah but John doesn't call it smoochie times in his books(I think).
yes
Emily Thompson scoodliepooping
😂
Characters too old
It's a great story, Hank, and the best thing about it is that you didn't take nearly 10 years to tell it.
haha How I Met Your Mother joke
Lawyered
he plainly stated that they met 13 years ago
ok
Swarnadeep Bhattacharyya i did not understand a single word you wrote. ...please dont answer comments from nearly a year ago, people dont care anymore. don't bother anwering this either
Aww Hank may not think that this is a cute story, but there's nothing quite as romantic as two lives falling into sink as "proximity takes over". Aww I love that. Sleepovers. Aw. AW.
I can't believe I wrote "sink" instead of "sync" that is so embarassing oh gosh.
I know! Nothing quite as cute and romantic as two people drowning very close to each other!
QuietFury There's a super insensitive Titanic joke in there somewhere.
@@ramywiles +
Yeah no they are extremely extremely cute together, especially that one where he's like "I like being married to you, you're my favorite person" and then she's just like " yes! Let's keep doing it"
So, what you're saying is you've had an abundance of Katherine? (Ba doom cha)
Marissa Amsden DING DING DING DING!!!
I can just imagine John watching this going "nope nope nope skipping this part"
made my day
Oh my gosh I can see that

This video makes me so happy. Because yeah, it's not the most interesting "How I Met My Wife" story ever. It's messy and normal and that gives me hope. Because big swept off your feet and I knew it was meant to be moments don't happen in real life. But real love happens all the time. I was friends with my fiancé for three years before he asked me out. And then I turned him down because I had just gone on a date with this other guy the week before. And then I was with other guy for almost a year, and when we broke up my fiancé didn't want to be a rebound guy so we were just friends for almost another year until he asked me out *again* and I said yes. And then on our first date I had a panic attack and cried in the bathroom for three hours. And told him I wasn't ready for a commitment yet. And ran away (literally). But then I got on the bus to go home and realised I was making a mistake, and called him back to ask for a make-up first date. And now we've been together for four years and are getting married.
lyadmilo oh wow. that's a lot of ups and downs.
lyadmilo ALL THE HOPE RIGHT THERE
AND NOW WE'RE MARRIED
lyadmilo YAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!
lyadmilo AW THIS IS SO CUTE CONGRATS
ohmiiiigahdd I am cracking up. "Except when we were sleeping zero feet from each other...smoochie times... hugs and kisses and laughter and kitty cats...proximity took over." I love Hank's lack of eloquence. Makes my day.

It's always nice to see people acknowledge that there are serious, long-term, loving relationships that begin as casual hookups. I've seen this plenty of times among my friends/in my demographic generally, but the cultural narrative always seems to be that serious romance and casual hooking up are separate, mutually exclusive things. It's good to be reminded that this isn't true.
Sometimes you just happen to hook up with the right person who then stays in your life for good.
I think if you read between the lines my guess is it was less of a casual hookup and more of a she was really into him and he was oblivious :)
I love the end. "I'm just gonna end this video before it en-"
John should make a similar video like now
Like "An open letter to Henry and Alice:
How I Met Your Mother" XD
+
"eventually proximity took over"

Roenazarrek +
hahaha omgggg he is so chill. "we only broke up once after that"
Probably because it wasn't really a big deal looking back on it. Often things like break ups aren't. But they still seem to major at the time.
This is the second time I have watched this video. In fact, I accidentally clicked on it this time. I love this story for its realness and simplicity. I think most relationships begin in similar ways. Proximity over a decent length of time is critical.
A person needs to have that time and that number of interactions to thoughtfully consider whether they and the other person can and will do the work that a long-term relationship requires.
Life is not film.
*screenshotted*
And there's a think called an arranged marriage
This is probably my favourite Hank video, it always lifts my spirits to watch the way he talks about his relationship. It is sweet and funny at the same time and I love how he actually let us know that Katherine is in the background laughing.
i really like that hank married a katherine... giving john's book and all
the names were probably inspired from them
Still better than How I Met Your Mother series finale.
"Smoochie times but not datey times"
I have never married but I was privileged to take the role of best man at my sister's wedding. I watched their courtship and was struck by the simplicity of it. It was two people meeting by accident and discovering each other. Their union was inspirational to me because it seemed tranquil and fulfilling. They kept their promises to one another and after eight years they tied the knot. They are an example of how friends can be much more. A concept that I hope more would aspire to. Like you and your wife, this is not a boring story but a sincere and fulfilling one.
"proximity took over" hahahahaha! :p
Hank. You did not just end a video mid sentence. There is an unwritten contract between Vlogger and viewer and ending your video mid sentence violates that contract!!!
TFIOS reference! :D
Iva Grebenar Yup! Finally, someone got it!
:) !!!!!!!!!
I’m from a decade in the future and I really appreciate Hank explaining Blockbuster. I know what it is, but here is to this video being around for another decade and this explanation being necessary 🥂
And that's how it's done. Yes, I'm talking to you, Ted Mosby!!!
Exactly!!!!
I love how he used the whole "proximity took over" idea for April and Maya in An Absolutely Remarkable Thing!!! It felt like such a real situation when I first read the book I was wondering if it was how he met someone.
This story was so refreshing, actually. It's awesome to know that good things can happen from nonmagical, sometimes complicated things.
Wow, John wasn't kidding when he said Hank didn't have any girlfriends in high school. I thought that was just brotherly ribbing :(
roselle495 I think he had a few? But few being the keyword. Crushes, at least. One of the early Vlogbrother punishments consist him of telling us an embarrassing story with sock puppets.
roselle495 what's so bad about not wanting a girlfriend when you're barely past the stage of being a child?
@@zain4019 that makes me feel better about my non-existent highschool romantic life
Pitty on the souls who never experienced BlockBuster.
Yeah but my blockbuster that used to go to was shutdown forever after the kicked us out
This reminds me of Marshal and Lily's story from How I Met Your Mother XD
You know Hank, you say it's not that big of a story, but I really like this video and watch it everytime I need something to not make me more sad or angry. So you can never know what ppl will find interesting and worth spend time watching.
I never get tired of Hank telling how he met his wife cuz it's a sweet story
Watching this (among many other videos) from the future is amazing. Thank you Past Hank.
This is an incredibly realistic story and a HUGE relief. Thanks, Hank, for being nonmagical.
NOTHING cuter than a nerd in love. adorable!
I love how the books in the back are color coded
ik really satisfying, right?
Sometimes dyslexia just gives you gems and reading the title as "How I Wet My Wife" was definitely one of them
😂
This wasn't uninteresting at all, Hank.
I enjoyed watching this.
"...when I wasn't sleep in no feet away from her...DING DING DING DING!" I just died.
damnn.. they are together for 21-22 yrs.... wow🔥🔥
How dare you demean such an amazing story. Hank your story sounds like one of your brothers books, you and him should totally write a memoir together
The Green Boys: And the Sainted (Somewhat just as eccentric) Women Who Love Us
Yes. I like this. Good.
You look more like 25 than 32 in this, which is a good thing.
I dread the day that people will not even know what Blockbuster is at all…
Your story is romantic in its own way. You guys look like you have a happy marriage and that's all that matters. That all those little events led you here.
I'm glad that you and your wife fought and had things that you've worked out. I've recently felt like all i've been hearing about are super perfect relationships that never had problems. Glad i'm not the only one who has had ups and downs in a long term relationship, and that it can work out. :)
His videos are like a time capsule
We only broke up like ONE time after that!
"But then eventually proximity took over" that is the greatest line ever
First thought, before I even began watching this, was: wait, How I Met My Wife, in 3:05 minutes? Dude, they actually managed to shoot nine seasons about the same subject in a series with almost the same title.
I love the way your face lit up when you realized Catherine was home. ♡
A video fully dedicated to the most lucky woman in the world.Bless you guys.
This is gonna be "How I Met Your Mother" soon... ;)
++++++++++++++++!!!
ik
I forgot I made this comment! XD
This video might as well be re-titled "To Orin: How I Met Your Mother"...
"there was a lot of smooching" its aight Hank you don't gotta be awkward anymore you're married to her.
Poor Orin if he ever watches this,
It's actually a great story! :) I can see what a great relationship you two have and it's nice to actually hear that it was not all good from the very beginning, it feels "normal"
A+ Video. I love VEDA because people just tell little life stories or talk about personal stuff (no time for extensive research/scripting). Hope Hank does some form of it this year. :)
Laughed so hard that I cried watching this. Love that it isn't a simple, perfect stereotypical romance and your presentation of it was fabulous.
i remember that physical place you call the "block buster".
Did Hank just pull An Imperial Affliction?
"Proximity took over." Translation: "I got some booty."
A much better love story than twilight.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS ISN'T INTERESTING???
This is soooooo lovely!! John should write a book about this!!!!
(I'm not joking, I swear!! I finished the video thinking "oooooooownnnn!!!")
Is your bookshelf color coordinated?
so m not the only one who noticed that !!
I WAS THINKING ABOUT HOW MUCH I WANTED YOU TO DO THIS TODAY AND THEN YOU BLOODY DID IT!!!
lol it died after u said "I'm just gonna end the video before it..."
oh I love to hear such personal stories about you!! *.* so sweet!
This makes me extremely happy. I ship it. I ship it a lot. Vlogbrothers OTP. Also, will Hank and The Katherine be producing any mini Hank/andortheKatherines? I feel like Henry and Alice need some nerd cousins.
I've always gotten the impression they can't/won't have kids. After Sarah announced she was pregnant with Alice, Katherine posted a kinda passive aggressive tweet about "stop asking her to be next" or something.
now they are!! :)
I don't know why but this story was so cute and it made me laugh/smile XD
I don't wanna hear about how you met your wife! I wanna BE your wife! Hahaa, I literally just clicked on this video to comment this lol
This is sort of creepy
There's nothing worse than feeling awkward, it just leads to being lonely then being even more awkward... When will the awkwardness ever go away?
I like this story because it's real. It's not made up or fake magical. It's beautiful.
Hank you and Katherine are both adorable. I really like when people make videos react to sounds that aren't immediately obvious, it's like they have a spideysense.
Aw! I know how you feel. I've only ever been with one guy, and he with only me, and we've been together for 17 years (married 11) this March O_O. I'm turning 31 in February O_O. Omg, that is a long time lol. It's kinda cool seeing another nerdy couple be so similar in their story as me and my husband ^_^.
Best part is we met in middle school because of a dragon I made out of clay in art class and he wanted to teach me D&D
This is beautiful.
Thank you, I think so, too
I just realized that you organized your books by color. Rainbow color. So awesome
I hope to have a marriage like theirs one day.
I love stories of how couples met! Every story is simple but the details are so unique.
But like its still really cute though. I'd totally love for my story to be like that.
I love how you explain what blockbuster was. It's like when I try to explain blockbuster to my sister
Tell your kids this is how i met your mother
This is really cute and it gives me hope :3
It's good to hear that people can have weird on and off relationships and have it work out in the end, that makes me really happy.
omg hank having a sex life
THIS OMG.
OMFG
fucking lmao
I still can't watch this video without giggling like a child. The cutest couple on UA-cam 💝💝💝
This is a lovely story, Hank. And now you're going to have a baby sooooon! ♥
This makes me smile so much :) I have relationship OCD (rOCD), which is, as one might guess, OCD that focuses on relationships. It can focus on any relationship but the most common one is romantic love, which is what I have.I have been with one male human, on and off, since I was fifteen years old. I am turning 21 in November. He is my everything, I mean EVERYTHING. He's my best friend, the first person I go to when I'm upset, the first thing I think about when I wake. When with him, I feel an overwhelming bubble of joy and fuzziness and I just look at him and think how can this quiet, awkward gangly pain in the ass make me so happy and fill me with such love? Cuz he is the biggest pain in the ass; I could go on forever about how much he ticks me off. Yet for everything he does that grinds me up the wrong way, I can come up with so much I love. We are so alike and so different. I feel so content and happy when with him, well, besides my Little Friend. The rOCD tells me I don't love him, that he's not the one, that I'm unhappy, that it won't work out. That's not all; it leads me to pick out his flaws and fret over the future, to question my feelings and if we are worthy of each other. It fills be with doubt and fear and I feel so guilty and wonder if it's OCD or me and god it's such a douchepants. Yet I hate to leave his side, I want to build memories with him, and he makes me really happy (most of the time!) I'm happy with this blob of squishiness, it's my stooped mind. I'm sure others can relate. I'd see him every day if I could, and adore his company. I love him so much. Thank you, Hank for showing that love can last, and that love is never perfect.
One of the best things about the new googletube+ is that I can now like this video for a seccond time...
That's awesome. Reminds me of how I got together with my husband. Though we tied the knot sooner. Love your wording in this :)
Any Hanklets coming along at any point??
I just imagine Hank walking around with 5 little Hanks on leashes, walking them like dogs.
He yells "dont eat thosevplants hanklet #2!"
Hanklet a cappella version of Accio Deathly Hallows...
That said if Hank ever wants to do a barbershop version of it...I sing tenor ;)
Who the Eff is Hanklet?
Holy crap a love that name!
...Your books are color coordinated. I aspire to be as coordinated. Oh! And your love story is adorable!
Such a cute story!!
I actually find it really encouraging to know that there are other couples who fight lots and had issues etc but managed to get through them and marry and end up happily ever after...
There's litterely probably someone here that doesn't know what DVDs are.
+xWood4000 Or what Blockbuster was... :O
Or doesn't know how to spell literally... Lol sorry 😂😂😂
+Peaches Sparkles 😂
Awee when he said "kathrine is home" his eyes lit up, and that slight smile! How cute!!
Thank you for not turning this video into a 9 year long story about your dating life...HIMYM joke...anyone...anyone.......nothing.
i honestly love that your vlogs are short (:
