- A quick tutorial and explanation/demo of using an FM 10 meter rig to talk through a 10m repeater. I use either my Yaesu FT-450 or my Wouxun UV950p, this antenna i have connected is probably not the best for this mode, it is polarized and optimized for ssb HF 40-10, but it is still working quite well.
I used a old Antron 99 cut to the 10 meter fm and it worked very well. Years ago when I was trucking I got into that repeater from California going north on I-5. All I had was a Icom 706 with a LDG 200 tuner going into a Wilson 2000 antenna.
Thanks for actually doing the second part to this video. I've been contemplating buying one of these radios. Now that I've see it in action I'm sold. Especially for working my region.
I like this radio a lot but I will use it at home so what power supply would I need? Thanks for the video!!!
The Tucson repeater is 29.67 output and 29.57 input with a PL tone of 110.9 the ID is K7RST
ok eric, thanx for the great video, and after a year with it how do you rate it, and if you do not mind you seem to have rated allot of transceivers so which one for the money would you recommend to a nube???
So, a few years in, hows the radio holding up? I was going to buy the Yaesu quad, but, for SHTF stuff this radio will transmit where the Yaesu won't. Honestly a bit gun shy of Chinese stuff lol.
So what's your options as far as antennas go? Since there's only one antenna connection I'm assuming a pretty broad band antenna assembly is required along with a pretty spendy tuner. Am I off on this? I like the idea of the radio but am concerned with being able to switch between, say, low ten meters and up to 70cm.
I have the Diamond cr8900 quad band antenna, it matches with this radio, 10m 6m 2m 70cm, no tuner is required on this setup. Just minor tuning on the antenna that coms with instructions. China has a generic replica of the diamond antenna I have, but I recommend the extra 30 bucks for the diamond, I had no luck with the hr8900 china model... They also make an MFJ antenna that covers these bands wi the addition of several HF options on it like 15 and 20m but this radio does not have those bands so no need to have an antenna that has those options when you can't use them.
I'm still in the process of studying for my technician class so this may seem like a stupid question, but what is the purpose of the courtesy tones? Also, I noticed your receive and transmit frequencies are different, is that the offset?
Yes this is the offset, and the courtesy tones are just a signal that the repeater is done with your transmission into it. Basically, when you hear the tone, it means you are ready to transmit that the other party has unkeyed. Sometimes when conditions fade, you wouldn't be alb to tell if the person you are talking to is done talking, most of the time the courtesy tone will make it through the low signal or the noise, despite you losing the other persons signal, this lets you know that he is done transmitting so you are not talking over him. Same concept as a roger beep on CB.
@@HamRadioConcepts There is an additional purpose for the courtesy tone on repeaters. The repeater will time out if stations don't leave a break between transmissions. That timer (usually set for three minutes) does not reset immediately when you unkey. The beep often indicates when the time-out timer has been reset. If you jump in before the beep, the timer will add the duration of the previous station with yours, risking a time-out.
Hi Eric, I have a question, its a quadband radio, but only ha1 antenna socket, how do you receive 4 bands on one antenna....fred G4VVQ
They make quad band antennas. I think Diamond makes one, also Comet. And China makes them too.
@@HamRadioConcepts I will look around for them thanks
I'm also curious how this radio is holding up, and your thoughts on it now. Would you recommend for a nude?
Great videos! Keep it up!
What auto/truck magnetic antenna are you using for the radio? thanks
Good demo of the wouxun 950 I just wish 29.620 was that clear here 28 Miles east of pittsburgh PA . Always hear 3 repeaters toppling one another on that freq. Got a TYT quad band on way hope to make use on 6 & 10 m alot. Great they got these radios out for us to make use of low band FM freqs.
Yes, it usually comes in full quieting. I have worked Italy through this machine on this radio and South Africa, as well as some fm dx simplex from this radio in my car.
10 FM is doing nicely so far.I think operators will want 2 use FM on 29mhz. I just stuck up a big 5/8 ground plane for ten tonight can't wait see performance on 29.600 tomarrow.
Do you know of a cost effective Chinese radio with a 5 pin data output jack to use with TNC-X?
Thank you,
Bob.
Question, I have this radio and programed it but can not seem to understand how to use or get to the program channels? KC2ZKC
Hey! What is good ham antenna book for novice? Sorry for my bad english!
A new repeater located on top of Mt. Lemmon (8500ft) Tucson AZ, is up and running on 29.67.
sweet. when 10m is better than it has been i want to try it mobile. i still use this rig mobile and love it on 10 FM
am thinking of getting one. my quistion is how do you like the radio?
Still got the screen protection foil on there?....... arrrrrggg...
HOW DO I ACCESS 10 METER BAND?. I have the same radio, but cant fint it!
heestenhats do you have the 920 or the 950 model? on band A on the left hit MHZ then type 029600
Another great video, thanks
What antenna tuner are you using for this radio?
At the time of this video I was using a mfj-969 tuner. But only because I was using my off-center fed dipole so hi agave to tune it for 10. This radio is now in my truck so I don't use a tuner. I have the diamond cr-8900 antenna which is tuned for 10 meters as well as 6,2 and 70cm.
W2FLA-R is the echolink node
I'm in Region 1 and I've got 70 Mhz instead of 30 Mhz on my rig. works great. But swings and roundabouts, you got 220 MHz we don't
You also have 144-146 and 430-440 we get 44-48 and 30-50
Will it do SSB on 10 meters?
It won't do SSB on any band since it's a quad band FM transceiver.
Alway use small band modulation, (Narrow) setting! 2,5 KHz deviation max @10 meter repeaters!
